What is a Full Classic® Car? A Full Classic® as defined by the Classic Car Club of America is a “fine” or “distinctive” auto-mobile, American or foreign built, produced between 1925 and 1948. Generally a CCCA Classic was high priced when new and was built in limited quantities. Other factors including engine displacement, custom coachwork and luxury accessories such as power brakes, power clutch, and automatic lubrication systems, help determine whether a car is considered to be a “Full Clas-sic®”. The complete list of recognized classics may be obtained from the Classic Car Club. of America, P.O. Box 346160, Chica-go, IL 60634.

A Message from Region Director Steve Evans

Hello Friends,

It’s been a busy start to the year with the club gathering for its annual Arizona Auction Week Breakfast at the McCormick Ranch Country Club in mid-January. Regional members were joined by guests from around the country – nearly 60 of us in all – as we enjoyed a beautiful day of sunshine, good food, and talk of old cars. Thank you to Christi Os-borne and Jakob Greisen at Bonhams Auctions for hosting our group for a preview of cars on offer after breakfast. This is always a treat for members and sets the bar high for great cars throughout the week. A few lucky members joined our region and the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club in February at the Phoe-nix Art Museum’s Legends of Speed exhibit for a tour by none other than former race driver (and Re-gion member) Lyn St. James. Lyn’s knowledge of the cars and insight from her career made for a truly special experience. I hope everyone had the chance to see this exhibit; it was a wonderful experience for our community. Sadly, the club saw the passing of one of our members, and internationally recognized author, Clive Cussler. Clive was a true car guy and he, along with his wife Janet, have generously opened their collection to the club on many occasions. Our thoughts are with Janet and the Cussler family. We also mourn the passing of a great Packard guy and Region member, Jim Updike. Finally, as we find ourselves in the mist of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 CCCA Annual

Meeting as well as our regional Garage Tour has been canceled. However, we look forward to a time we can be back behind the wheel of our treas-ured classics and we will make every effort to re-schedule the Garage Tour for later in the year. Be safe and stay healthy, Steve

Region member James Earl Updike passed away on February 13th, 2020 at the age of 70, as a result of injuries sustained in an off-road UTV accident. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Valerie; four sons, four daughters- in-law, and 13 grand-children. Jim was born on June 14th, 1949 in Phoenix, Arizona to Earl and Ethel Updike. He attended high school and college there and then attended BYU, where he met his future wife Valerie. After college he returned to Phoenix to run the family business, Updike Photog-raphy. He subsequently sold this to Lifetouch Pho-tography and later purchased Total Warehousing, a logistics company in Phoenix. He sold Total in 2004 and began traveling, although still being involved in motorcycle/ATV dealerships in Colorado and New Mexico. In 2008 he founded Updike Distribution Logistics with his sons. From an early age, Jim became enamored by any-thing with motors or wings. In 1978, he earned his pilot’s license and loved to fly. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and organized dozens of Harley rides. He treasured his small collection of classic cars. He was an avid boater and loved spending time in the sun. Robert McAtee remembers Jim: I met Jim about 7 years ago when he bought his first Packard, a 1942 110 convertible. He liked this so much that within a year he had acquired a very nice 1948 Super 8 convertible and a 1937 V12 Converti-ble Sedan that had previously been owned by Tony Ficco. The 1937 was both a CCCA Senior and Premier Car and had won many additional awards. It was shown at the first Arizona Concours at the Biltmore and received a top award in its class. In addition to his Packards, Jim owned an early 1920's Mercer and other vehicles. Jim credited his grandfa-ther's love of Packards for his interest in the marque. Jim had recently sold the 1937 and 1948 Packards to make way for other projects.

It is with deep sadness that I inform our Region members of the passing of my close friend, Clive Cussler. He passed away at his home in Paradise Valley on Monday, February 24th. Clive was 88 years old. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be private. His life passion was his writing, family, and old cars, including many of our be-loved CCCA-recognized classics. Naturally, his world famous best selling books included old cars as an integral part of the plot, especially the adven-tures of his fictional character, Dirk Pitt. Clive was always generous in hosting CCCA events, both for the Arizona and Colorado Re-gions. Along with his wife Janet (whom he suc-cessfully converted into a car person), the couple hosted two recent events at the Janet Cussler Car Collection here in Scottsdale: the January 2020 CCCA National Board Meeting during Auction week, and the Collection was part of the bus tour during the CCCA Annual Meeting which took place in Scottsdale during the January 2019 Auc-tion week. Clive was a consummate car guy, and being a celebrity never got in the way of his being down to earth and a gentleman who loved to share great car stories with anyone who was interested. I will al-ways miss him! Steven Kreisman

Annual Auction Breakfast And Bonhams Auction Visit

Arizona Region members and a number of out-of-town CCCA members gathered at the McCormick Ranch Golf Club at 9:00 on January 15th for our annual Auction Breakfast event. It appeared to be the largest gathering, outside of the National Annu-al Meeting, that we’ve hosted - more than 60 peo-ple. Here are some of the packed tables of car peo-ple meeting with old friends.

Classics Under The Sun Shines Again

Photos By John & Cheryl Ossenfort

On February 29th, members again met for the Classics Under the Sun car show at the Pavilions McDonald’s. This annual event is an enjoyable get-together and also a fund raiser for the Ronald McDonald House, which provides a place for par-ents of hospitalized children to stay nearby. Each Arizona region participant donated $25 for that cause, with some additional cash coming from the Region treasury. This year, a total of $500 was given to this worthy cause. The show was preced-ed by good conversation and a relaxing lunch at the nearby Babbo’s Italian Eatery.

European Classics A-Z:

Lancia

“Beauty Will Drive The World”

By John Ossenfort

Vincenzo Lancia was an early race car driver for Fiat at the turn of the 19th century. He and a friend thought they could build faster cars and formed the Lancia & C. Fabbrica Automobili in 1906 in Turin. Their first car, the Tipo 51 12HP had a small 4-cylinder engine. But Vincenzo Lan-cia’s creativity eventually built one of the out-standing Italian automobile companies.

Vincenzo Lancia at the wheel of a Fiat 50HP in the Targa Florio of 1908 - he finished 2nd.

Lancia’s accomplishments include early global trade - the Lancia Beta (n/c) of 1910 was shipped in parts to the US and sold here as the SGV for several years. The Theta (n/c) of 1913 was the first European auto with a complete electrical system. The Lambda of 1922 (n/c) has a pioneer-ing monocoque chassis (Lancia called it “stressed hull”) and four wheel brakes, and featured a slid-ing pillar independent front suspension, used in all subsequent Lancias until 1963.

Lancia’s classic cars began with the Dilambda of 1928. This was Lancia’s luxury car and featured its first V8 engine, a 4-liter model with overhead cam and Zenith updraft carburetor. The chassis reverted from a “stressed-hull” to a standard cross-member unit to allow bespoke bodies to be built on it. The car could achieve over 110 mph. The first series was built from 1928 to 1931. During this period, Lan-cia’s close association with the designer and coachbuilder Pininfarina began.

The Astura, Lancia’s other classic, was first pro-duced in 1931 to replace the Lambda. It was origi-nally given a 2.6 liter ohc V8 with single carburetor achieving 72 horsepower. Like the Dilambda, many custom coachbuilders supplied bodies for the Astu-ra. The second series, introduced in 1932, was only a minor change, with new engine mounts to over-come a vibration issue. In 1933, the 3rd series intro-duced a new 82hp 3 liter engine, and a long wheel-base chassis was added to the lineup. Finally, in 1937, the 4th series produced only the LWB vari-ant. Lancia production ceased in 1939 with the ad-vent of WWII.

In 1931 the brakes and gearbox were upgraded for the second series (1931-1933). Finally, in 1933 the chassis was modified to make a more streamlined long wheelbase model, the Series 3. Dilambda pro-duction ended in 1935.

The 1928 to 1939 Dilambda and Astura cars are considered Full Classics by the CCCA. There is only one Lancia listed in the 2019 CCCA Hand-book: a 1937 Astura living in Florida.
