Stephen Allwood was born in 1959 in Fiji. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Canterbury University, majoring in printmaking. He gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Otago Polytechnic and then went on to study for his Masters at Elam School of Fine Arts. Stunt Double 2013Hannah Kidd

    Giddy Up #4, 2015Joanna Braithwaite

Hannah Kidds ability to create a dialogue between her works and the viewer combined with an innate sense of form, character and personality singles her out as one of the countrys foremost young sculptors. Kidd has quickly risen to critical acclaim with her distinctive work being exhibited around the world including Im Sure Ive Seen that Before, Vienna, Austria (2002), Sculpture by the Sea, Australia (2007, 2009 and 2011), Sculpture by the Sea, Denmark (2009 and 2011). Her work has been shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout NZ. Kidd recently completed her first public commission as part of Christchurchs SCAPE Public Art Festival

Joanna Braithwaites portraits of animals examine the vagaries of the human condition, often with a sly poke at the ridiculousness of everyday life. A regular exhibitor since the 1990s, Sydney-based Braithwaite maintains a successful art career on both sides of the Tasman. Her work was the subject of a major survey exhibition in 2005 under the curation of Justin Paton (then of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery) and Felicity Milburn (Christchurch Art Gallery). In 2011 the NZ Portrait Gallery curated Significant Others, a significant collection of Braithwaites paintings, which was also shown at the Sarjeant Gallery in Whanganui.

    Flat ZoneHayden Stuart

    Chilly Bin ShotMatt Guild

Hayden Stuart who attended Rathkeale College under the tutorship of Evan Jones, would be classified as one of our emerging contemporary artists. In 2014, he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours, at Monash University, Melbourne. Consistently sceptical of his position as an artist and an individual, his work often confuses the idea of authorship through ironic self-reflection. Hayden has held solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne and is an independent curator there.

Matt Guild is a Martinborough based artist whose works would be considered as photorealism. His paintings are about light, shadows, reflections and environment. All of Matts paintings have an element of still-life, taking an object, often seemingly mundane, using that as the main focal point and injecting new emotional life into it. Matt loves to paint anything that draws on the nostalgic emotional history of our childhood. In 2015 his Kiwiana oil painting Spaghetti Open Can won the coveted NZ Art Show Signature Piece Art Award.

He lives in rural Carterton, north-east of Wellington, where his studio looks onto the foothills of the Tararua mountain range. Art and the great outdoors were features of Crawfords childhood. Patterned Light 2015 Quadrille 2010Jenna PackerPaul Martinson

Jenna Packer explores the political, economic and social constructs that shape contemporary society at both global and local levels. She employs a rich, metaphoric language, confronting the viewer with questions about the seen and unseen forces that control our day-to-day lives. David Eggleton has highlighted Packers growing influence, noting that by reviving history painting with idiosyncratic flair as pageantry... Jenna Packer has emerged as a painter who bids comparison with her sometime contemporaries, in particular Shane Cotton, Bill Hammond and Seraphine Pick. (Art NZ, No. 152)

Paul Martinson, born in Palmerston, now living as a full time artist in Masterton, completed a NZ Certificate of Science and Biology at Palmerston North Polytechnic. Untitled 2008Sraphine Pick

Roger Mortimer is a painter who draws inspiration from history and legend, medieval texts, illuminated manuscripts, religious imagery and maps. His most recent body of watercolour on board works (completed in 2015 while in New York on a residency as the Paramount Winner of the 2014 Wallace Art Award) sold out at the recent Auckland Art Fair and were described by Art Collector magazine as a continuation of his clever synthesis of antique allegory with contemporary concerns. Roger has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland and has work in public and private collections in New Zealand.

Pick was born in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, in 1964. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Canterbury in 1987 and gained a Diploma of Teaching from Christchurch College of Education in 1991. In 1994 she received the Olivia Spencer-Bower Foundation Art Award, followed in 1995 by the Rita Angus Cottage Residency in Wellington. In 1999 Pick was the Frances Hodgkins Fellow at the University of Otago, Dunedin. She has received grants from the Arts Council of NZ (1995) and its successor Creative NZ (1997). In 2009 Sraphine had a survey exhibition which toured to three major cities within NZ.

Still Life with Poppy Seedheads 2010

    Helene Carroll

    So, so Homesick 2002Helene Carroll

Helene was born in Paris. Her parents and her mothers father were the only family members who survived the Nazi concentration camps. In 1949, Helene came to NZ with her mother and father when the opportunity arose for Jewish refugees to come to NZ. So, so Homesick is one of 16 paintings from the series, The Tyranny of Self-Imposed Exile, completed when Helene was in Indonesia in 2007 and 2008 and is a response to living in an exotic but totally different and alien culture and then feeling torn between returning to Australia, where her children and grandchildren live, or succumbing to the strong pull of Aotearoa.

Still Life with Poppy Seedheads comes from Helenes series Thinking about Matisse. Matisse used familiar objects from his own environment to create domestic scenes.
