Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to Kiwitea Street for our penultimate home game in the round-robin phase of the ASB Premiership, against opponents who, like ourselves, have already qualified for the semi-finals.We extend a warm welcome to Stu Jacobs and his Team Wellington squad, and their supporters, for today’s feature twelfth round fixture in the competition, and trust you’ll enjoy your time with us this afternoon.Aaron, Ramon and the boys have carried on their winning ways since our last home game, following up a 5-1 win over Waikato FC here with a solid 3-0 win at Otago United, a result which confirmed our place in the play-offs. Well done, boys.We were hoping to play in Noumea last weekend, of course, but our OFC Champions League encounter at AS Magenta was called off two days before the match due to “the unsuitability of the Stade Numa Daly to host this fixture”.At the time of writing, this match has not yet been rescheduled. When it is, there will almost certainly be some disruption to our schedule for the remainder of the season, which, as can be seen elsewhere, currently has us playing on every weekend between now and the first leg of the O-League Grand Final on April 2.In between those ASB wins, a mixture of first team and Academy squad players took on the Wellington Phoenix reserves here at Kiwitea Street, and were seconds away from claiming the $2000 when a last-gasp equaliser saw the spoils shared.Among those who played in that game were a couple of new recruits to our squad. We extend a warm welcome to Albert Riera Vidal and Manel Exposito Presseguer, and trust you’ll enjoy your time here with us at Auckland City.We also take this opportunity to congratulate our own Cameron Martin, and Team Wellington’s Scott Basalaj and James Wypych, for their efforts in helping the Young All Whites qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Finals in Mexico later this year.We extend our thanks to our major sponsors, Placemakers Cook Street, our community partner, The Trillian Trust, and our other sponsors for their continued support, namely Nike, Carlsberg, Chapel Bar & Bistro, Dominion Constructors Ltd, Butterfly Creek, Fresh to Go, Gee Gees Bar & Brasserie, Lone Star Café & Bar, Five Digital Print, Malcolm Pacific, L‘oreal Paris, The Rock 90.2FM, and Vuksich & Borich Ltd.Wherever possible, please support those who support the game. We hope you enjoy today’s ASB Premiership action, and trust you’ll join us in the clubrooms after the game. We look forward to seeing you again in thirteen days’ time, on Saturday 26 February, when we take on Waitakere United in the OFC Champions League.

Upsets aplenty in matchday four action

4 www.aucklandcityfc.com

There were upsets aplenty on Matchday Four action in the OFC Champions League on the first weekend in February, with the previously unbeaten Lautoka and Waitakere United teams both coming a cropper, as reigning champions Hekari United staged a dramatic recovery to draw 3-3 at Amicale. The biggest winners of the round didn’t even play! Unbeaten Group B leaders Auckland City saw their trip to AS Magenta called off at the eleventh hour when it emerged that Stade Numa Daly was not in a fit state to host this O-League fixture, a revelation which went down like a lead balloon with the tournament organisers. The match has yet to be rescheduled, but with arch-rivals Waitakere coming a cropper 3-1 at AS Tefana in the only Group B game played, the group is now wide open, with all four teams well in with a chance of playing in April’s two-legged Grand Final.Lorenzo Tehau rattled home the game’s opening goal off the underside of the crossbar in the twentieth minute, and his brother, Alvin, pounced ten minutes to double the home team’s lead following a corner, much to the delight of the faithful who gathered at Stade Louis Ganivet.Waitakere were afforded a lifeline when Allan Pearce potted a penalty in the shadows of the half-time whistle, but try as they might, last season’s beaten Grand Finalists couldn’t peg back the deficit, and when Axel Williams struck in injury time, the

game was up for the West Auckland outfit.United now need to win their last two matches and hope other results go their way if they hope to make amends for that Grand Final defeat. So Kiwitea Street will be no place for the faint-hearted when the Kiwi contenders clash later this month. A dramatic day’s action in Group A saw leaders Lautoka take a tenth minute lead through Valerio Nawatu at Churchill Park, only to have goalkeeper Jone Sorolo sent off four minutes later for felling Koloale striker Ian Paia.Jeffrey Bule stepped up to level the scores from the penalty spot, and by the half-hour mark the visitors were well on their way to a stunning 6-1 victory, thanks to further goals from George Suri and Benjamin Totori. The former Waitakere striker saw Lautoka substitute Kamal Hassan clear his shot off the line on the stroke of half-time as the visitors continued to boss proceedings, and they carried on where they left off seven minutes after the interval through Ezra Sale, who scored Koloale’s fourth goal of the game.Ten minutes later, Totori notched his second of the game before completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot thirteen minutes of time to seal a 6-1 win for Koloale, which leaves Group A wide open.In the other match in the group, reigning O-League champions Hekari came from 3-1 down with three minutes

left on the clock to snatch a 3-3 draw at Amicale, who scored the only goal of a keenly contested first half through Alick Maemae’s penalty kick six minutes before the interval. The home team doubled their advantage in Port Vila through Dereck Malas six minutes into the second spell, but as the rain began to tumble, Osea Vaketalesau struck for Hekari just shy of the hour mark to set up a barnstorming final half-hour.The Papua New Guinea team’s marksman spurned a glorious chance to draw his team level soon after, and it looked as if it would be a costly mistake when Amicale’s two-goal advantage was restored via a Fenedy Masauvakalo free-kick sixteen minutes from time. But Hekari showed their championship qualities in the dying minutes, Vaketalesau giving them hope with an 87th minute piledriver before Malakai Tiwa equalised in the fourth minute of stoppage time to level the scores. The 3-3 result was suffice to allow Amicale to take over at the top of the table on goal difference from Lautoka, with Hekari two points behind both teams, and Koloale a further two points adrift.Auckland, meanwhile, top Group B on goal difference from Waitakere, with Tefana and Magenta a point behind the New Zealand contenders, whose clash on February 26 at Kiwitea Street highlights Matchday Five action in the O-League.Tefana enjoy home advantage against Magenta in the other

Group B encounter, while in Group A fixtures, Amicale entertains Lautoka on a day Hekari heads to Koloale. Welcome again everyone to Kiwitea Street this afternoon and a special welcome to Stu Jacobs and his Team Wellington squad.Well it’s been an interesting few weeks for us for a lot of reasons. On the pitch we’re beginning to settle down and convert the style of football we’ve been trying to play into consistent wins. Those good combinations in possession are starting to become more effective. The game against Waikato United at home saw us deliver one of our better performances this season, dominating possession throughout and putting the chances away, which at the end of the day is what football is all about. Then away at Otago, different conditions, a big field and a surface which was a bit slow, but we played some good football and created lots of chances to seal another win on the road. Those two victories have put us in a good position to finish the round robin on a high and most importantly to believe in our capabilities as the business end of the season nears. In between these two games, a friendly match was played against the Wellington Phoenix “A” team where we could spread the minutes throughout our squad and try and work on some specific points in possession, like lowering the amount of times we give possession away in order to keep progressing in our playing style. Although we’re beginning to perform well and are becoming a good product, we have to remember that we’re still a developing team, we’re still in the learning process. In the O-League the postponement of our game in New Caledonia and the loss for Waitakere United in Tahiti

has kept us top of the group without playing but the competition is still very open, anything can happen. The group is looking very tight and beside Waitakere, both AS Magenta and AS Tefana are very strong sides. The three games we have to play are going to be very hard because every team has a chance to make the Final and we will need all your support guys for the important remaining matches in that competition.Today you will hopefully see an entertaining game, traditionally Team Wellington look to play good football and with the situation at the top of the ladder it promises to be a very interesting match. This season some new names have popped up for them, the likes of strikers Tado and Kamri, two skillful players that are effective in front of goal, other well known names are Solomon Islanders Abba and Fifii who combine skill and speed, and midfielders Barbarouses and Haliakis who provide the quality in the short passing game that makes Team Wellington one of the better sides in this competition. From our perspective we will keep trying to be the dominant team with the ball, re-emphasising that we are an attacking side that is patient in possession. So get ready for what promises to be a good game of football and enjoy the match! Finally on behalf of the entire squad we would like to once again thank our Board, our sponsors and community partners, our hardworking Match Day Management Committee and our great fans for their wonderful support this season. Your fantastic input is very much appreciated by all the players and staff.Aaron & Ramon

The loss of Cole Peverley and retirements of FIFA World Cup All Whites James Bannatyne and Andy Barron hit Team Wellington hard last year but there has been cause for optimism with a raft of new faces joining the club in the off-season.Phil Imray has taken over the gloves from Bannatyne and can point to a 2010 Chatham Cup winners medal picked up during the winter as an indicator of a career arc on the up. Former YoungHeart Manawatu defender Scott Robson joined the capital men while the Solomon Islands international pair of Andrew Abba and Michael Fifi have the potential to unlock any defence in the ASB Premiership with their skill, trickery and goalscoring prowess.Other new names to feature include midfielders Cornand Romain, Emiliano Tade and Wellington Olympic striker Hicham Kamri. Greg Draper – Team Wellington’s top goalscorer last season – has left the club with much expected of Kamri, Tade, John Sutherland and the Solomons duo to deliver the goals that help the team surpass last season’s semi-finals finish.

COACH – Stu JacobsA Chatham Cup winning coach with Western Suburbs, Stu Jacobs’ appointment as head coach of Team Wellington prompted the most consistent and successful three seasons in the club’s history, as it shed its underperformer tag and made the playoffs in each of those seasons and the grand final in 2007/08. Jacobs has also been involved in the New Zealand set up as an assistant coach of the All Whites, and as a head coach of both the New Zealand U-20 and Olympic teams, the latter earning a draw with hosts China on its Olympic debut

PLAYER TO WATCH – Hicham KamriA new recruit to Team Wellington, the Wellington Olympic striker, along with John Sutherland & Emiliano Tade, has carried much of the burden of goal scoring created by the departure of Greg Draper, Luis Corrales, Graham Little and Andy Barron in recent seasons. With 7 goals in 10 matches this season the Morrocan-born striker has clearly earmarked himself as Team Wellington’s “go-to” attacking force.

With diets and healthy eating a common theme at this time of year, FIFA.com looks at ways in which clubs have been looking to keep their players in check over the festive period…There can be little doubt that eating more healthily and doing more exercise will have featured prominently among many people’s New Year’s resolutions, particularly given the excesses that the festive period almost inevitably brings. Nor are professional footballers the exception to the rule, with the odd player sure to report back after the holiday period with a few unwanted kilos. Mindful of that risk, a number of clubs around the globe have taken steps to ensure their time off had as minor an impact as possible on players’ weight and fitness.Brazilian outfit Corinthians, for example, brought their squad together prior to the off-season break in order to distribute a personalised dietary plan tailored to each player’s needs and body type. A common theme was advising them not to take in too many carbohydrates, especially late at night, while O Timão’s fitness coach also suggested squad members try to take part in friendlies or charity games to keep their match fitness topped up. Will Ronaldo and Co have stuck faithfully to these guidelines, one wonders?Paying the penaltyOther clubs have gone for the stick rather than the carrot approach, opting to

punish players with fines should they let their weight slip out of control. Eintracht Frankfurt have given their entire squad the freedom to put on up to half a kilogram without sanctions, yet every additional 100 grams will see their wallets lightened by €100. And for those who return two kilos or more overweight, they can expect to lose the less-than-palatable sum of €3000.Yet it is not just during the festive season that professional footballers must battle to remain in tip-top condition. A number of big-name performers have found the often lengthy summer break a minefield of temptation. One such example was former South Africa hitman Benni

McCarthy who, after missing deadlines set for him to achieve his ideal weight, was fined around

£80,000 by club side West Ham United at the start of the 2010/11 campaign.Fellow Hammers front-runner Carlton

Cole is another sinner, albeit to a lesser degree, after admitting to have flouted Italian coach Fabio Capello’s ban on English staples such as fish and chips and tomato sauce. “I was dying. I needed to put something on my pasta, so on one of the trips I took a packet of ketchup,” said the former Chelsea man, on his act of rebellion while on England duty. “But I won’t do it again.”Less rigid in his requirements was ex-Germany boss

Jurgen Klinsmann while in charge of the host nation at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™.

Preferring instead to teach his troops the importance of healthy eating but without laying down strict guidelines, Klinsmann’s approach certainly worked on flying

Footballers given food for thought

forward Lukas Podolski. Indeed, the odd bag of crisps did not stop ‘Prince Poldi’ from bagging the Gillette Best Young Player award in his country’s charge to third place.

Spain’s recipe for successNor do the coaching staff of the reigning world and European champions seem overly strict as regards their players’ diet, with captain Iker Casillas somehow convincing Spain’s team doctors that enjoying hamburgers on their days off would not affect La Roja’s lofty standards. What’s more, Spanish internationals for the past 20 years have found themselves in the enviable position of being catered for by noted Navarre chef Xabier Arbizu at every competition.“You have to teach footballers what to eat from a young age,” said Arbizu, who uses only the finest ingredients and works hand-in-hand with La Selección’s medical staff to ensure all the players’ nutritional requirements are met. “There’s a lot of pasta and roasted vegetables. Footballers prefer meat and chicken so you end up repeating a lot of recipes. We also put on plenty of desserts and fruit, which is always peeled. For special celebrations when they’re at home, I recommend they have a nice fish, griddled or steamed,” added the chef, who has also worked extensively with his country’s U-17 and U-20 squads. With the science of football growing ever more advanced, little is left to chance, particularly at the very highest level. Experts from a host of fields analyse and plan every aspect of footballers’ performances, and it is now commonplace to find specialists such as psychologists and nutritionists coordinating closely with clubs’ coaching staff.Spain supremo Vicente del Bosque, a professional

back in the 1970s, is well placed to give an insight on how times have changed. “Habits have evolved. We used to eat pretty much anything, but now footballers rarely stray from what’s good for them: they’re more

aware of how important it is.”“It (a good diet) is absolutely vital to meet the demands of modern football and players know how crucial it is to their performance,” continued the man who guided his country to victory at South Africa 2010. “We have to consider

nutrition as just another facet of training. The right eating habits enable players to train with greater intensity and perform better.”However, on the evidence of the buoyant morale in the Spanish camp over recent years, there remains plenty to be said for allowing a little wriggle room, depending on each player’s taste. “Pepe Reina likes his meat practically raw, while Gerard Pique prefers his really well-done,” said Arbizu. “But we don’t do anything strange, because the doctor sets the guidelines and those are what we have to follow.”
