Tour Highlights

Day 4 • Auckland Christchurch Greymouth • (B, L*)This morning y to the Garden City - Christchurch, the gateway to the South Island, world-renowned for its beauty. You will be met upon arrival by your tour guide and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a brief tour of some of the city’s most famous sights including the award-winning Christchurch Botanic Gardens which feature one of the nest collections of exotic and native plants found in New Zealand. Although much of the central city with its classic neo-gothic architecture was destroyed by the huge earthquake in February 2011, Christchurch remains a beautiful city. The buildings may have been damaged but the soul of the city remains very much intact. This afternoon, depart Christchurch for Greymouth, a town with a history of jade hunting and gold mining on the stunning west coast of the South Island via the spectacular Arthur’s Pass National Park, the heart of the Southern Alps.

Day 5 • Greymouth Hokitika Fox Glacier • (B, L*)Travel towards Paparoa National Park and gaze in wonder at the Punakaiki pancake rocks and blowholes, where columns of water shoot skyward from rocks that resemble giant stacks of hotcakes. Continue on to Hokitika and view traditional Maori and modern New Zealand art at a gallery specialising in pounamu (greenstone) jewellery and art works. Have lunch today at the hospitable town of Franz Josef which serves the glacier of the same name. Later travel to the south-west to the cosy township of Fox Glacier. Choose to do an optional Glacier Walk Ice-hiking Adventure* (requires minimum level of tness) or Scenic Helicopter Flight* (both at your own expense).

Day 6 • Fox Glacier Wanaka Queenstown • (B)Begin with a short walk along the banks of beautiful Lake Matheson, one of the most photographed lakes in New Zealand, famous for its stunning reections of New Zealand’s highest peaks - Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Then make your way to Wanaka, known as one of the most beautiful lakeside towns in New Zealand. Stretch your legs and feed your soul while taking in the picturesque scenery. Continue on to Queenstown via Cromwell, which was established by gold miners, but whose treasure is now its stone fruit. Stop at a Mrs Jones Orchard where you can taste some of New Zealand’s renowned high-quality fruits. Arrive in Queenstown this evening. You can explore this romantic city at leisure or take an optional Skyline Gondola* ride up to Bob’s Peak and enjoy dinner at the famous Skyline Restaurant* with panoramic views of the city (at your own expense).

Day 2 • Auckland Taupo Rotorua • (B, L*, D*)See New Zealand's most visited attraction, the magnicent Huka Falls, where more than 220,000 litres of water thunder over the cli face every second. Here, the Waikato River, normally 100m wide, is squeezed through a 20m wide gorge. Then it’s south on to see the immense Lake Taupo, which is about the size of Singapore, created nearly two thousand years ago by a volcanic eruption so big it darkened the skies in Europe and China. Continue to Rotorua, the heartland of New Zealand’s Maori Culture and explosive geothermal activity and visit Te Puia Thermal Village, a place of bubbling mud pools and spectacular geysers including the world famous mighty Pohutu Geyser which erupts up to 15 times a day and shoots hot water around 30 meters skywards. This evening, experience traditional Maori cultural ceremonies and performances followed by a Hangi Feast.

Day 3 • Rotorua Matamata Auckland • (B)This morning breathe in the fresh air as you walk through the spectacular Whakarewarewa Forest, known to locals simply as ‘The Redwoods’, whose impressive feature is its local namesake - the grove of giant coastal Californian Redwoods, which tower 60 metres into the sky. Head north through rolling countryside and experience the real Middle-earth by taking a tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set for ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movie trilogy and The Hobbit lms. Take a look at Bag End, where Frodo and Bilbo’s adventures began. Get lost among the Hobbit holes and visit the Green Dragon Inn, the mill and the Party Tree.
