I recently bumped into an old friend who inquired about what was new in Auburn. As I attempted to answer him, I realized that I was being very vague in my response, because I had drawn a blank. No specific,

newsworthy tidbit came to mind, because change and growth have become familiar in Auburn! In case you get asked the same question this fall as we welcome friends and family to the Plains for some football, here are my top new happenings that have taken place in the past six months:

Wow, what a nice facility our young athletes will have access to for their nutritional needs while playing sports and attending school! Congratulations, Jay Jacobs and staff. • The Heart of Auburn development has welcomed three new restaurants—Uncle Maddio’s Pizza, BurgerFi and Taziki’s—along with two new retailers that should please the students and fans alike. The developer also just announced that they have a letter of intent from Panera Bread to place a second Auburn location in the development that includes a drive-thru feature, a new design for Panera. Panera has been a good corporate citizen and a member of the Auburn Chamber since the day it opened in 2004.

• The first ever UPC concert to be held in downtown Auburn is coming up on the eve of the first home game against Arkansas.

The show will be held in the entertainment district in the new Gay Street parking area. The headlining band is Switchfoot, an American alternative rock band. The concert is free to the public and scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and end before 10 p.m. The UPC representatives have shared with the city council and others that if this inaugural event proves to be a success, they hope to bring more like events to the downtown venue.

EAMC EARNS EXCELLENCE THROUGH INSIGHT AWARD East Alabama Medical Center was recently recognized with an Excellence Through Insight award by HealthStream, Inc. The award was for the hospital’s 7th floor

nursing unit. Also known as 7T, this medical unit had the highest percentage of top-box (best possible) feedback from their patients on Overall Rating. Of the 1000 medical units in the Healthstream database in 2013, 7T had the highest Overall Rating feedback.

EAMC was awarded this honor for its commitment to excellence in patient care. To qualify for an award, a hospital must have been a patient satisfaction-tracking client of HealthStream in 2013, scored in the 75th percentile or higher, and surveyed a minimum of 100 patients. EAMC was chosen for receiving the highest ratings in patient experience from among HealthStream’s clients, as well as for exceeding industry standards.

“All of our nursing units do great work, but our 7T unit really excelled in 2013 with the start of our collaborative care program,” says Terry Andrus, president. “We trialed it on their unit and it went extremely well; we are continuing to roll it out hospital-wide.” Collaborative care is an initiative where multiple disciplines (physician, nurse, pharmacist, etc.) meet with a patient at the same time.

This is the second Excellence Through Insight award earned by an EAMC department. Last year, the Opelika office of RehabWorks was recognized for “Overall Patient Satisfaction” in Outpatient Rehabilitation. RehabWorks had the highest ratings in patient satisfaction from among Healthstream’s 250 outpatient rehab clients.

HealthStream CEO Robert A. Frist, Jr. said, “We applaud East Alabama Medical Center’s high-level commitment to excellence in healthcare, and are pleased to recognize their achievement through our presentation of an Excellence Through Insight award.”
