Exodus 33:19-23“And the Lord said,
“I will cause all mygoodness to pass infront of you, and I willproclaim my name, the Lord, in yourpresence. I will havemercy on whom I willhave mercy, and I willhave compassion onwhom I will have
compassion. But,” he said, “you cannot seemy face, for no one may see me andlive.”Then the Lord said, “There is a placenear me where you may stand on a rock. Whenmy glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft inthe rock and cover you with my hand until Ihave passed by. Then I will remove my handand you will see my back; but my face mustnot be seen.”
Have you ever had a really, really badday? Have you had a day when noth-ing seemed to go right? if you think
you have had a bad day, consider the testimo-ny of this person as he attempts to explain hisaccident to the insurance company. i am writ-ing in response to your request for additionalinformation. in block number three of theaccident reporting form, i put “poor planning”
as the cause of my accident. You said in yourletter that i should explain more and i trustthat the following details are sufficient:
today, we are going to give consideration tosomeone that kept having bad days.
what makes this person so interesting isthat in the midst of these difficult situations,he shows tremendous courage. His name isJoseph. when we first come across Joseph, wenote that he is the favorite son of Jacob. He issuch a favorite that Jacob buys him a veryexpensive colored coat that makes the otherbrothers crazy.
You see Joseph had a sibling problem. theywere all very jealous that Joseph had receivedsuch a beautiful coat. But perhaps what madeit worse were the dreams that Joseph kept hav-ing. these dreams were prophecies of great-ness and places of leadership, even over hisbrothers.
Needless to say, the brothers did not receivethe reports about these dreams so well. Day byday, this favored-son status gnawed at themand their jealousy turned into hatred. One day,Joseph was sent by his father on a mission tohis brothers. seeing an opportunity to be rid ofthis annoyance, they took Joseph prisoner.they had had enough, and they cast him intoa pit to die. reuben, the eldest, interceded fora change of plans. instead of leaving Joseph todie, they agree to sell him to someishmaelites, who then will take him to Egypt.
this brings us now to our study of Genesis39. so we will breakdown the story of Josephin Genesis 39 into six sections that will showhow he handled adversity. the first section isPrOMOtiON Now Joseph had been broughtdown to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer ofPharaoh, the captain of the guard, anEgyptian, had bought him from theishmaelites who had brought him down there.the lord was with Joseph, and he became asuccessful man, and he was in the house of hisEgyptian master. His master saw that the lordwas with him and that the lord caused all thathe did to succeed in his hands. so Josephfound favor in his sight and attended him, andhe made him overseer of his house and puthim in charge of all that he had. from the timethat he made him overseer in his house andover all that he had the lord blessed theEgyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the bless-ing of the lord was on all that he had, in houseand field. so he left all that he had in Joseph’scharge, and because of him he had no concernabout anything but the food he ate.
when Joseph reached Egypt, he was about17 years old. the ishmaelites sold him to aman named Potiphar. But Potiphar was noordinary man. when it came to Egyptian lead-ership, he was up near the top, for Potipharheaded up the military wing that guarded thePharaoh. so Joseph is forced to leave the lifeof a shepherd-farmer and becomes a servant in
an Egyptian household. it is here he will learnnew customs, speech, and language. He willeven become familiar with hieroglyphics.immediately, Joseph shows a flair for admin-istration. His administrative skills were put towork and it became clear to Potiphar that hehad gotten a bargain. this Joseph was a valu-able employee.
for everything that Joseph did, he did well.Everything that Joseph managed was donebetter than it had ever been done before. andthe text tells us why; there is relationshipbetween God’s presence and His blessing.thelord was with Joseph. Joseph knew prosperi-ty because God was with him.
it was not anything that Joseph had doneper se. it was because God was blessing him.prosperity. it was extraordinary. it was unex-pected. But it was also very obvious. for evenPotiphar had to acknowledge that God waswith Joseph. so, because Joseph was a faithfulman with unusual ability, Potiphar entrustedthe entire management of his house to him.and as a result, Potiphar was blessed as well.

Plays come and go.story lines are sim-ilar. for some you
might say, “if you seenone, you’ve seen themall.” However, can’t saythe same about the pro-duction that ran fromaugust 12-14, at thetBaal.
i’m not quite sure howthe “sweet potato pie” fitsinto the title, but there wasdefinitely suspense,
drama, comedy, crazy characters, and plenty of lies in thisplay. there were lots of laughs as the murder mysteryunfolded.
lead character, Deandre fellows (played by KeithDouglas), was a successful and handsome businessman and
ladies’ man, whose ladies were being murdered one by oneand he was the prime suspect. His friends and family mem-bers try to help unravel this mess and prove his innocence, while a former girlfriend is trying to cling to him for life. However, Deandre had other plans for his life and they did-n’t include her.
Other cast members include actor Christian Keyes, come-dian D. Ellis, Hip Hop sensation Big Chief, pop star laurenashley, actress amelia Jeffries and K-104 morning showhost lady Jade. the musical highlight of the evening wasthe one and only Jennifer Holliday, two time Grammyaward winner and recording artist and Broadway sensa-tion. the only thing Ms. Holliday has lost is lots of weightbecause that voice is still intact and she brought down thehouse. and, of course, Ms. Holliday sang one of myfavorites, the song that most of us have tried to sing at onetime or another, “and i am telling You i’m Not Going”from the Broadway musical Dream Girls. Not only doesshe sound great, but Ms. Holliday looks great!
this production was written by Dallas native, Ms. t. D.
Ballard. Ballard began her writing career at 17. while incollege, she launched her acting career on television as theco-host of a hip hop talk show “Just loungin.” she discov-ered a passion for television and began to enroll in actingclasses. Ms. Ballard represented the Dallas Model Group in the
Model american international talent Competition at thefamous waldorf-astoria Hotel in New York. she tookhome several 1st place awards advancing thousands of con-testants. following her success in New York, she camehome to Dallas where she auditioned for the Potter’s Houseannual Christmas Play, where she landed a lead role. it wasthen when she realized her true love for the stage.Bllard has written, directed, produced and appeared in
many theater performances to include He ain’t My Man, aPlace Call Hell, 360 Degrees against the Odds and now thenational stage play “suspicion! lies! and sweet PotatoPie.”if you didn’t get a chance to see this play, keep Ms.Ballard on your radar screen so we can support her futureworks.

Trustee Redistrictingthe growth of Dallas isD impacts each
trustee’s district and, according to the 2010Census data, Dallas isD’s trustee districts areout of balance and must be redrawn in order tocomply with the “one person, one vote”requirement of the u. s. Constitution.therefore, Dallas isD’s Board of trustees isconsidering new boundaries for its trustee dis-tricts. During a series of public hearings, theBoard obtained comments and suggestions

Taking God atHis Word
Do we reallytake God atHis word? we
say we do, but do wereally, totally believewhat God says will
eventually come true? well, we do not actlike we do, because if we really take Godat His word, we would not do some of thethings that we do. the reason why i saythat is because i am a prime example, andthat is why i was a non-believer for solong. in other words that is why iremained in the world of sin not know-ing, and not wanting to know God,because i did not take God at His word. iheard my mother talk about the joy ofJesus Christ.
i read about it in sunday school all mychildhood days. i’ve heard preacherspreach about the joy God will give, but idid not really believe that is because iwas never baptized until i reached the ageof forty-two. i did not think that anythingcould top the good times, and the fun iwas having in the street of Dallas. ithought i was at the epitome of fun, andthat is just what it was fuN.
i did not think things could get any bet-ter that it was at the time in my life, but ihad never experienced joy until i met thelord Jesus Christ. after i met Jesus ifound JOY and you know it is a funnything about JOY, you can’t explain it nomatter how much you try. all you can dois tell somebody how to get it, but youcannot explain to anybody about it.
all you can tell them is that you foundcomplete JOY in Jesus Christ. they haveto get it for themselves. after experienc-ing the joy i would not give it up for anyamount o f money. when you have JOYyou will be able to do great things inGod’s name. You remember when Peterand John went down to samaria (acts8:14-18) and simon the soceror askedPeter and John to sell him some of thispower or magic. Now, when i became a Christian i began
to understand why a sinner would not
take God at His word. Men of God oftenget caught up in traps, because they gothrough the motion of taking God at Hisword, but in some instances they reallydon’t, but we as Christians must learn totake God at His word.
there are some people we read about inthe Bible who did not take God at Hisword. take adam for instance, He reallydid not take God at His word when Godtold him if he ate of the forbidden fruit hewould surely die. after adam sinned.God made it plain that to please Him ormake atonement for your sins, there mustbe the shedding of blood. well abel and Cain understood this, but
Cain offered up fruits and vegetableswhich was good, but not acceptable forsin, and that is why God turned his offer-ing down, but accepted abel’s offering.Cain did not take God at His word. Don’tyou be a fool enough to believe that ifyou want something, just believe hardenough and you will have it. this is notfaith. faith is taking God at His word. itis believing and acting on what God hasrevealed. Joy is inward, a response toman fulfilling his creation purpose of fel-lowship with God, and how can man ful-fill his creation purpose? By “taking Godat His word”. as Christians we say webelieve God’s word. Do we really?
let us remember to read our Bibles.May God bless you rEal GOOD, andmay He ever keep you in His loving care

one night the sonran away. Days, weeks andmonths went byand when the sondid not return the
father began a journey in search of therunaway boy. finally in Madrid, spain, ina desperate attempt to find the boy, thefather put a small ad in the local newspa-per. the ad read, “Dear Paco, meet me infront of the newspaper office at noon. allis forgiven. Your father.” the next day, infront of the newspaper office, eight hun-dred Pacos showed up. they were allseeking forgiveness and reconciliationwith their fathers. i’m sure this story reminds you of the
story recorded in our scripture lesson.that too was a Paco who ran away fromhis father but who “came to himself” andfound forgiveness and reconciliation. One can’t help but wonder how manyother Pacos there are out there: Pacoswho have yet to learn of their father’slove. if by chance one is reading thisdevotional, may he/she not hesitate torespond to the father’s love and comehome. the good news of the gospel isfound in these words: “Paco, i love you. Please come home. all is forgiven.” 1John 1:9: “if we confess our sins, He isfaithful and righteous to forgive us oursins and to cleanse us from all unright-eousness.”

worked for about 6 years and thelady only a few months. we had acompany event this past week andi found out that the lady is mar-ried. the male coworker has beenknown to spread his lovingaround the office. the last personthat he had been with from the office ended upwith an stD, and she ended up quitting thejob because of the trouble he had caused her.i don’t think anyone has told the new girl thatthis is what he does, and that she may be insome danger of getting sick. i want to warnher, but i’ve found in the past that thesewomen don’t listen.
they’re so flattered by his advances thatyou can’t tell them anything against him. so,on the other hand, knowing that she most like-ly won’t stop messing around with this manuntil something bad happens to her, i want togo and warn her husband instead. i just feelhe is an innocent bystander in all this andshould be forewarned that his wife could bebringing home more than just a paycheck.Don’t you think that these people need to be
warned about this guy?Just Think They Ought to
Know
Dear Just,
although your coworkers’behavior sounds quite inappro-priate, it is really none of yourbusiness. let me name a coupleof reasons why:1. this is workplace gossip.
2. they’re consenting adults.for your own job security, my advice to you
would be to minimize your involvement in allof this. i want to give my mother’s advice forlongevity on a job: “show up, shut up, anddraw a check”.

was “Choosing aCommunity” ruth1:8-18. this isperhaps the mostbeautiful pictureof love and devo-
tion betweentwo people.Naomi is thepersonification
of a godly mother-in-law who lovedboth her God and her family. she hadtwo daughter in laws named Orpah andruth who loved her and was willing toleave their homeland and become a partof israel. Naomi tried to convince hertwo daughters to return to their ownpeople. Orpah took her advice andreturned, ruth spoke those word that weso often hear at weddings ruth 1:16-17;“and ruth said, intreat me not to leavethee, or to return from following afterthee: for whither thou goest, i will go;and where thou lodgest, i will lodge: thypeople shall be my people, and thy Godmy God: in the lesson we see the begin-
ning of God doing something great inthe life of a person who had no idea howthe death of her husband and her follow-ing her mother in law into a land thatwas foreign to her, who worshipped aGod she only knew through her mother-in-law would prove to be a great bless-ing to her and to the world. the morningmessage was delivered by Pastor lloydMorgan his subject was “do rightbecause it’s right to do right” Gal 2:11-14.
He encouraged our youth who wasreturning to school to avoiding beingdiverted from their purpose of attendingschool by peer pressure or bulling.sometimes children pressure them-selves because they feel that being apart of a certain group make them“cool” or part of the “in” group. inchurch there can also be peer pressureupon members by certain groups. thereare those that think that their longevityas members give them a certain amountof importance and authority over thenewer members, thus causing a divisionin the church.
Be Blessed!

with an attitude ofexpectation. Evenat that, we need toask God to teach usthe importance ofknowing how towait. the scriptureclearly says “theythat will wait upon
the lord shall renew their strength; theyshall mount up with wings as eagles; theyshall run, and not be weary; and they shallwalk and not faint” (isaiah 40:31). as wesearch the scriptures, we can clearly seewhat comes to those who wait withexpectation. we can say as samuel said tothe lord, “speak for thy servant heareth”(1 samuel 3:10). then look for Hisanswers. You will be amazed at how Heanswers in ways you had not thought of.therefore, be steadfast and unmovable, waiting on the lord will pay off afterwhile.

In an attempt to understandthe moral direction thiscountry is taking, it gets
very confusing. a decade or so back i though
the country or the Nfl wouldvote to remove the DallasCowboys from the Nfl.
Michael irvin had a few episodes with police. the whitehouse, a house some of the Cowboy’s supposedly hadfor their sexual escapades. it got so bad some reporterswere caught hiding in trees, in the area around theCowboy Café at Valley ranch.
there are even a few people who think these eventscould have cost the Cowboys team of the 90’s a chanceto win 4 super-bowls. the thought was had Dallas draft-ed randy Moss coming out of Marshall, they wouldhave won that 4th super-Bowl. Jerry Jones was afraid topull the trigger on Moss because he had some baggagewith him. with the triplets still playing well, Moss andirvin would have been too tough to cover. But in order tostay on the good side of the fans nationally he chose todraft a good guy type in Gregg Ellis. Gregg was a good
player, not great. toward the end of his time here allhe did was hinder the growth of the younger D-line-man.
we were good guy conscious for a few years, evenrecently with Michael Vick in his dog fighting and exe-cutions. Had Michael not gone to prison, he would haveneeded the secret service to protect him. the public sen-timent toward him was that strong. there were somepeople that wanted him to do more time and never begiven a job when he got out of jail.
adam (Packman) Jones have a few incidents at stripjoints, as a matter of fact, there’s a bouncer at a stripJoint in Vegas still paralyzed because of one such inci-dent. there were rape accusations filed against Benroethlisberger, drunk driving, and vehicular homicidecases filed against players. Plaxico Burress shots himselfin the leg he gates a couple years in jail. You had thefeeling that Joe Q Public was ready to write a newmorals code for athletes
then something changed. the guys that we thoughtsociety was ready to get rid of began to get jobs. in somecases got jobs ahead of guys you thought had the moralexcellence to be voted Nfl Man of the Year. MichaelVick took Donovan McNabb’s job with Philadelphia.Packman Jones got a job with the Bengals; Plaxico gotBraylon Edwards out of New York. Edwards is younger
and faster, although they could be the same person whenit comes to off the field bad judgment moves.
i don’t think any of those dogs Vick had executedreturned to the living or society legalized dog fighting. But the same guy that would have needed the secretservice to protect him is now as big in Philadelphia asrocky, Bill Cosby, the liberty Bell, and the Declarationof independence.
some years we want to pray in school. then otheryears we don’t even want prayer in Church. i think webetter make up our minds if we want a super-Bowl or amorally conscious society.

To look at him you would never imagine the kind of workhe does. He has the face and the physique that youwould expect to see on the cover of GQ. so, why is he
in the business of taking care of the deceased? the answer isquite simple. it’s something Brian J. Nickerson was destinedto do.
Brian credits his mother and grandmothers for his careerchoice. as a child growing up, they went to church and tofunerals frequently. He was always intrigued by the niceclothes only because he liked to dress up.
“as a young man growing up people would always ask mewhat i wanted to be when i grow up. My answer was alwaysa mortician. and when they asked me why, i would tell thembecause i like the suits and the limousines. But, as i grewolder, i realized my calling was to help people, and that mademe more intrigued about funeral service.”
He was born and raised right here in Dallas. He graduatedfrom Booker t. washington High school for the Performingand Visual arts and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music. He attended a Music conservatory in los angeles, for a num-ber of years, honing the gift of Music given to him by God, allthe while working part time in the funeral service business.
after returning home to Dallas from his years in losangeles, he graduated from the prestigious Dallas institute offuneral service. Combining his passion for music with hisdesire to serve people in the funeral industry, he became amember of the rockwall friendship Baptist Church serving as
the Music Director. He later began working as a funeralDirector at Paradise funeral Home in Dallas, tX which wasthe career he chose as a child. Brian says he had no plans toleave Paradise funeral Home, but God always has a better planfor you. He knows his coming to work for singing Hillsfuneral Home is where he is supposed to be.
During the interview with Brian, it was obvious he loveswhat he does and he loves people. He answered the phone afew times over the course of the interview, and each time, heflashed that winning smile and proceeded to assist the caller.
Brian insists on providing the families he serves with thebest service. in order to do that, singing Hills funeral Homehas been transformed into a state of the arts facility.Everything a family needs to make their loved one’s transitionto eternity is available on site. a beautiful chapel (the largestof its kind in Dallas), boast beautiful chandeliers and seatingfor 350 people comfortably! it is very open and you get thefeeling you’re at home as you enter the building. a beautifulcemetery is just a short walk across the immaculate and wellmaintained grounds.
Brian says it is the goal of every staff member to makesinging Hills funeral Home the household name it was whenit was founded more than thirty years ago. Now as theManaging funeral Director he has the utmost respect for Mr.Charles woods, for giving him the opportunity to serve asfuneral Director; stating that “Charles woods is the“Cornerstone” of singing Hills funeral Home.”
Brain says the families he has been privileged to serve are apart of his extended family; and he makes it a point to remem-ber the names of their loved ones.
for a truly personal service from “people who care”, singing
Hills funeral Home is dedicated to providing traditional andcustomized funeral services for communities throughout theDallas – fort worth Metroplex.
