CHAPTER 613 October 2021

As the Prop Turns

• This month saw the following ratings and solo’s: Brian Ricca soloed (Bob Desmarais, instructor), Emma Laber Private Pilot (Kyra

Becker, instructor), Ishir Agarwal soloed (Ed Scot, instructor). Tony Speranza had several solo’s and Slavic Yaryna g earned his

instrument ticket. Congratulations to all.

• Still no word if KFSO will be shutdown Summer of 2022 or Sumer of 2023. Still no word if they will leave the grass runway open

for operations evenings, mornings, and on weekends when the other crews will not be

working.

• We are still working on the Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (ELSA). We have problems

with one of the two cylinders cutting out above 50% throttle. The HKS engine experts tell

us that it is probably the coils and CD ignition boxes. Ours are quite old and they are a

known problem with the older units. Nothing that a mere $1,600 won’t cure! I ordered

them and hopefully they will come in and solve the problem so we can fly it before the

weather turns too cold.

• George Coy, arranged with Potsdam flying club to overhaul their Lycoming O-320 H2AD engine. The deal

is that he will overhaul the engine for them with the help of some of our Young Aviators. They pay for all

the parts and after successful running of the engine will make a significant donation to the chapter schol-

arship fund. A good deal for them and a good deal for the chapter.

• George recently sold an Overhauled Continental O-200 to a flying club in Camas Washington. They were

happy with the engine and sent their old engine back for overhaul. We are doing the same thing. They

will pay for all parts and expenses and will make a donation to the EAA Chapter 613 Scholarship Fund.

Instructor Updates from Tony Speranza

• New solos in a Cessna 150 include: Joshua Jarvis & David Welch. Joshua and Da-

vid are best friend from high school who are learning together. They appreciate

the wonderful airplanes available at FSO flying club and they having a BLAST.!

• Slavik Yaryna recently obtained his INSTRUMENT rating in the Flying Club’s Piper

Arrow - nice job! Also, Slavik had his 1st Multi Engine flight instruction...really

enjoyed flying the Twin Comanche. Recent upgrades make this airplane a joy to

fly on instruments, it is fast & stable.

• "Fly Out" to Malone NY on September 18th was really nice. Bruce Budditt, the

Manager @ KMAL did a nice job. They had lots of stuff to do for kids, food trucks

& vendors. The were giving airplane rides - next year I'd like to see if we could get

some volunteers to go over & give Young Eagle Rides. Thanks Bruce!

• RC Airplane - EAA Nation supplied us with a complete ($1500 value) electric RC

airplane KIT. It's going to take significant time but is a great opportunity for any

kid or adult that has the time & want to learn about building an air-

craft...same as a real one, just smaller. Please contact me directly if you are

interested in working on the RC airplane project.

• Flight Instruction - I have some extra time if anyone needs Instrument or

Multi-Engine instruction.

• Thanks to the entire EAA 613 Team...we'll sure miss DON TAYLOR.

Treasurer’s Report—George Coy, Treasurer

• As you can see, we had some significant donations to the Youth Aviation Scholarship fund in September. Many thanks to Gisela Alpert and Jason Owen.

• We have the $3,000 Ray scholarship that was originally for Elizabeth Demag assigned to Ishir Agarwal now. • Emma Laber finished her license in September, and we nominated Ella Newton as our fourth Ray Scholar. She is in

the process of submitting her application.

• We have some significant donations just received and will be in the October Treasurers report.

• I wish to say a BIG thank you to some doners that many of our members are not familiar with. The First is Jason

Owen. Jason was the chief engineer at the Vermont Agency of Transportation Aviation Division for many years. He

retired some years ago and has been a regular donor to our chapter. The second is Roberta Haskins. Roberta

owns a Tax and Accounting business based in the terminal at Montpelier. She and her husband owned a Cessna

182 for many years. She was a founder of the Vermont Aviation Advisory Council and supported the Ace Camp

efforts. She has been a consistent donor to our chapter for many years as well.

• EAA Chapter is now signed up for AmzonSmile. If all members and any friends, we can recruit were to move their

regular Amazon account to AmzonSmile account it would benefit the chapter. If you are not already an Am-

zonSmile member, simply sign up at smile.amazon.com and select your favorite charity to start generating dona-

tions, at no cost to you. Open the app and find 'Settings' in the main menu (☰). Tap on 'AmazonSmile' and follow

the on-screen instructions to turn on AmazonSmile on your phone or tablet. The way it works is that once you

move your account to an Amzonsmile account, it will not make any difference to your Amazon account, but Ama-

zon will donate .5% of every purchase to EAA 613. It will not affect either a regular Amazon account or a Prime

account. When you first go to the AmazonSmile page, it will ask you who you wish to receive the donations. We

are listed as Experimental Aircraft Association Vermont Chapter 613. After you sign in you will see the Ama-

zonSmile logo at the top left of the page. Below that it will show “Supporting: Experimental…”. Now whenever

you buy something it will generate .5% of the purchase price to our chapter.

Youth Aviator Scholarship Corner

October 2021

Our EAA Chapter 613 Youth Aviators and their Adult Mentors were busy last month connecting, volunteering for the wonderful Young Eagle Event and accomplishing flying milestones. We have new pilots, pilots who soloed, and pilots who had their first ever lessons! To date, the generous hearts of EAA Chapter 613 supported 21 Youth Aviators to realize their aviation dreams over the past two years.

This month, George, Jasper, Kyra, and Beth were interviewed by EAA National Chapter Field Representative I and Ray Scholarship Coordinator, Chris Gauger, about the magic formula for success behind EAA Chapter 613 Youth Aviation Program. Jasper and Kyra shared extensively about the ways in which our chapter is unique in that we are an inclusive club with big hearts and we are dedi-cated to supporting all youth. One example that emerged was the way in which we support female pilots. While nationally only 5% of pilots are women, 48% of our Young Aviators are female. We are delighted that so many young women feel welcomed in our chapter and are pursuing their aviation dreams alongside so many supportive and caring individuals.

Do you shop on Amazon? Please consider using AmazonSmile and Support EAA Chapter 613!

With the help of our Youth Avia-

tors, EAA Chapter 613 set up an

eBay store and we recently com-

pleted the process of establish-

ing ourselves as an eBay charity

through eBay’s partnership with

PayPal Giving Fund. This is help-

ful because with every item we

sell 100% of the sale will go di-

rectly to our Youth Aviation Pro-

gram. In addition, if any chapter

members have sites on eBay,

they can donate a percentage of

their sales directly to their chari-

on basic selling fees for sold

items. It is simple to set up -- see

the photos below.

We have several wonderful

items in our eBay store, from

CHAPTER 613 October 2021

EAA Chapter 613 Youth Flyers: Reflections from Flight Training

Ishir Agarwal, Ray Scholar

This month was pretty fun! I got back in the air. I am also cranking on with ground school and I am

about 80 percent done and will pass my written exam before December. This Friday, there are going to

be two pilots landing a helicopter at our school’s baseball field! EAA Chapter 613’s Young Eagles Day

was also super fun, as being around the airplanes, watching parachuters emerge from the sky, and see-

ing lit-up faces on kids was truly a nice way to spend a Sunday!

This month, I soloed for the first time! Was that an experience! As much as I love having Ed in the plane

walking me through everything, the thrill and pure confidence I enjoyed taking off from Montpelier

without some sort of safety net was something I am never going to forget. The weather was perfect, I

felt really good about flying, and Ed recited a stanza of a poem the Walrus and the Carpenter which

was, “The time has come the walrus said, to speak of many things, of shoes and ships and sealing wax, and cabbages and kings,

and why the sea is boiling hot, and whether pigs have wings.” Then he said, “Which you now have, Go solo!” It was a perfect first

solo!

Kyra Becker, Ray Scholar

Fall is here and flying just became that much more enjoyable! I forgot

how beautiful Vermont is in the Fall. I have included a few photos of

some fall flying I have been doing. This month I flew my mom to Pots-

dam, NY, where we spent the day with my twin sister at her college, St.

Lawrence University, for family weekend. It was very memorable and I

felt good sharing my passion with my mom. She had a great time and

we couldn’t have asked for a better day to fly. On the way there I heard

my student Emma over the radio on her check ride! It was a very ex-

citing feeling when I got a text the she was “☰certified”. She worked so hard and that work paid off!

Last week I had a mock interview day for my Corporate Aviation and Career Prep class. My professors helped my class polish our

resumes and cover letters in preparation! I did an HR interview and a technical interview with two very successful people in the

industry. It is nice how well Vermont Tech prepares you for real life situations. It went very well and was an amazing experience.

Jasper Henderson, Ray Scholar

I had fun volunteering at Young Eagles Day. It was great to see all the kids go flying, and the smiles afterward. It was a lot of fun

talking to the parents while the kids were flying too. I went flying a little while ago, it was good to get back up again. Unfortunately,

the ceiling was kind of low so all I was able to do was touch and goes in the pattern at KFSO, it was good practice though. Hopeful-

ly, I'll be able to take some friends up while there is good weather soon and see some of the fall foliage.

Emma Laber, Ray Scholar

Hello all! I have the most exciting news…I passed my check ride! It was a lengthy process, to be honest. I flew to Plattsburgh for

9AM and we did my oral, which was fairly quick. Unfortunately, the wind picked up while I was there and I got stuck in New York

for a couple hours. It was not a waste of time at all though! My examiner, Duane, took me to the Homeland Security building, lo-

cated right at the airport. He showed me a bunch of cool rooms, the helicopter and plane, and the bent prop from his plane crash a

few years back. It was all so interesting and I very much loved the tour. He even let me sit in the helicopter and gave me a quick

lesson on its controls!

When the wind died down enough to fly it was too late to fly with him and so I flew the very bumpy ride back to Franklin County.

Duane and I scheduled for the next morning at 8AM. This posed a slight problem for me because I live pretty far away. Thankfully

my dad's uncle and aunt were kind enough to let me sleep at their house in St. Albans, very last minute. What a blessing.

9

CHAPTER 613 October 2021

Emma Laber (Continued)

The next day was such a calm day and I finished the eval by 11AM. I was so nerv-

ous the whole time and sweated so much. But Duane had little to say about how I

could have improved the flight, so that was good. He said I did very well. I felt

proud. To make a long story shorter, by a little bit, that was the best day of my life!

I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to fulfill this lifelong dream, and now to

share it with so many lovely people in my life! Of course I have so many people to

thank. Firstly George Coy, John FitzGerald, and Beth White for all of the support

and helping me to get the Ray Scholarship. I have no idea how long this process

would have taken me if I had not had the scholarship. I’m so grateful for you guys! And of course all of you in Chapter 613 for your

help and support in any way I needed it. I have had too many instructors to name but there’s a few who I owe a special thanks to!

One being Ed Scott, for letting me use his plane and for the free instruction to get all my requirements finished up. Very thankful

for all his patience, even through the hectic COVID days. Also Bob, for the last minute check ride prep flight, which gave me some

much needed confidence! And finally Kyra. She not only is a great instructor, determined, and a girl to seriously admire, but also a

friend… thanks Kyra! Thank you to everyone who played a part! If there’s anyone reading this who is considering pursuing aviation,

I recommend you do it!

Joseph Mensah, Aviator

Over the last month, I made some nice progress In my commercial course. I’m currently on my last oral activity, bar the stage re-

view prep, which is followed by XC’s, night solos, commercial maneuvers, and finally the stage check. A highlight from this month

came last week during a dual night flight as I got to watch our homecoming fireworks over the campus while I was practicing emer-

gency procedures and night pattern work. Outside of flight training, I was able to connect with a Delta First Officer with the help of

my aviation mentor, Michael, in which we had a great chat and I learned a lot.

Brody Hammond, High School Aviator, AOPA Ray Scholarship Recipient

Well I really wasn’t expecting October to arrive this quickly! Over the last month I’ve been night-flying traffic patterns at KFSO with

Kyra in 172VT, and it’s been going great. After a year and a half of pretty much doing nothing and intense boredom, getting out and

doing as much stuff as I can feels amazing. My current goal for flight training is to be soloing as soon as I can, right on or around my

16th birthday this January. I’ve got high hopes on what October will be bringing!

Mya Loringer, High School Aviator

This month I had a lesson in a decathlon and went upside down in a plane for the first time! It was amazing. I also found out that I

have been offered a cost share program with the EAA to cover the expenses of my private pilots license. I am so excited to have

this opportunity to continue my aviation journey.

Silas Scheckel, Aviator

This month I got my complex endorsement! I am excited to be able to fly this new kind of faster, fancier airplane. I got my endorse-

ment in a Cessna 172RG Cutlass which is a lot of fun to fly. It flies very smoothly and fast. I feel like an airline pilot when I operate

the retractable landing gear. It even has an autopilot but it only controls your heading. If the weather cooperates I hope to fly back

to Vermont for Columbus Day weekend. Next week it will be back to instrument training. I really need to get my instrument rating

so I can actually do real cross country flights as a reliable means of transportation rather than depending on there happening to be

a perfect day in terms of weather.

Ella Newman, High School Aviator

This month has been very good! I did my first night flight and it was very fun. We flew to Plattsburg to do touch and goes for the

first time, as well. I am starting to think more and more about college as graduation is slowly approaching, and I am going on a tour

of Bridgewater state this week. After not knowing what I will major in for the longest time I have decided to major in aeronautical

science. Bridgewater has a good flight program so I will continue to fly in college if I choose to go there. I will also apply to Vermont

Tech and Embry-Riddle.

10

CHAPTER 613 October 2021

Ian DeVries, High School Aviator

Instrument training has been pretty good so far. I’ve spent a lot of time in VFA’s flight simulator the

past month practicing various approaches and circling and I’ve started to do them for real more re-

cently in the airplane. It’s all a new challenge, but I’m liking it. I haven’t flown out of Franklin County

in a while, but I’m hoping to come up sometime soon and fly around a friend or two to see the foli-

age. I’ve got my fingers crossed for vibrant colors this year!

Ella Lambert, High School Aviator!

October foliage did not disappoint, at least from my perspective on the ground. I would like to say that I

have been enjoying the views from the air but frankly I am doing a ton of touch and go’s to work on my

landings, so I have not really had time to admire the fall colors while flying.

My lessons with Kyra are going great, but I had a lesson scheduled the day of the Young Eagles event

and she pawned me off on Bob Desmaris so I am not sure she feels the same. Bob was great. He teach-

es very differently than Kyra, although the message is the same…I need to work on getting the nose up

when landing! Kyra did take me back this week though, so maybe she isn’t completely sick of me yet.

My confession of the month…while my flying is going great, I have not been spending much time doing ground school. I know, I

know, I need to work on it. But on the other hand, I do think I will beat my mom to be the first one to solo!

I want to thank everyone again for their support. George, John, Beth and all of the members of Chapter 613, thank you so much for

the opportunity you have given me!!

Mara Stevens, Aviator!

I’ve been lucky enough to be quite constantly engaged in aviation-related activities for the last few months. In June, I began an

internship at BETA Technologies, where I worked with the subscale and manufacturing teams. It was an incredible experience, and

it gave me a new insight into the field of aerospace engineering, where I one day hope to work. While at BETA, I visited Oshkosh

with the team, which was about the most fun I’ve ever had.

I was scheduled to study abroad in Rabat, Morocco, this fall but that was unfortunately cancelled due to COVID. With that develop-

ment, I left BETA to study at Vermont Tech in Williston, where I’m doing the first year of the electromechanical engineering pro-

gram as my senior year of high school. There is a chance that the study abroad program will only be delayed until January, in which

case I will spend about five months at a Moroccan high school, while living with a host family and learning about the local language

and culture.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be able to capitalize on these opportunities, and I can’t properly discuss them without mentioning

my flight instructor Ed, who I met through EAA Chapter 613, who has been a friend and mentor long after I finished my PPL. He’s

helped me with every application, written letters of recommendation, and talked me out of stupid decisions. Chapter 613’s schol-

arship has meant more to me than I could ever have expected, and I’d like to express my gratitude to everyone who made my

flight training, and everything that’s come after, possible.

Raphaela Sulley, High School Aviator

September was pretty busy! I as well as my other club leaders had our first SJU meeting which

stands for the Student Justice Union. What we do is we raise awareness on racial issues going on

in the world as well as in our school and community . I also registered for Vermont Virtual Learn-

ing Cooperative economics and geometry classes, which I was excited to do because I mostly pre-

fer online school. I am also participating in the Young Eagles day next Sunday which will be my

first flight. Lastly, I was given the new Ninjago City Lego set which I’m so excited to build! I can’t

wait to see how the rest of the month goes!

11

CHAPTER 613 October 2021

Raphaela Sulley (Continued)

At the end of last month on the 24th, I attended my first Young Eagle day. I got to fly to Swanton with the Butterfields and Ishir. I

also got to be an escort. As an escort I walked the families and kids to the plane that they would be flying. I also was lucky enough

to do a Young Eagles ride with Stan. We went from the Swanton airport to the Plattsburgh airport, did a touch and go, and came

back. I had a really good time and met other Young Aviators who were a part of the program. It’s officially fall and that means

PSATs are just around the corner. I will be taking the PSAT test next week. I am excited because it’s one step closer to college,

which means I’m growing up but gotta do what I gotta do. We officially kicked off our school musical “Little Shop Of Horrors”,

which I’m excited to be a part of! We have a new musical director and she is so talented and passionate. This coming mouth is go-

ing to be a lot but I’m ready to take it on!

Miranda Gallagher, now a High School Aviator!

This month I’ve worked on my scholarship application so I can fly more often. I went on a flight with Kyra around Burlington and

Plattsburgh and I’m trying to schedule my next lesson. I was at the Young Eagles Day but didn’t get to help as much as I would have

liked, but I did get some homework done. I went to George Coy’s hanger to help work on ELSA, and I’m looking forward to next

month.

Niko Cueno, High School Aviator

A couple weeks ago I went flying…in the dark. My grandparents offered to give me a ride to KFSO for a 7 PM flight. It was a Thurs-

day, I figured I would try to get a flight in at night, after school. So, I rush home from cross country practice, grabbed a snack and

headed out the door. We arrived at Franklin County at 7:02, and I made my way to N11554, the good old Cessna 150. My instruc-

tor, Kyra, had already preflight the aircraft, so we hopped right into our before-start checklist. We took off, climbed to 2500, and

talked to Burlington on the radio as we headed over to Plattsburgh for touch and go’s.

If you’ve landed at Plattsburgh, you would remember the huge 11,759 long and over 200 foot wide runway. We do around 6 touch

and go’s, two of which, consecutively, we had to extend our downwind as other jets and Cessna’s landed. One thing that was new

to me about night flying was the difference in depth perception. As you land you assume, looking down the lit up runway, that

your altitude is higher than you actually are. It felt as if I was at 10 feet, where you would generally be flying straight down the run-

way without much back pressure. In reality, you were only a few feet above the ground. We headed back to KFSO in total dark-

ness. On the ride back from the airport my grandparents interrogated me about flying, and this was later at night. Logged 1.4 for

night training. Hoping to get some more night training in the future!

Ian Bradet, Middle School Aviator

The month of September was a blast for me. First of all, I never thought I would be interested in the mechanic aspect of anything

relating to engines, but this month I realized that’s not true at all! I Have started to learn quite a bit of aviation mechanics with

George Coy, and I’m very much enjoying it! On September 25th, I got to log my first multi-engine hour in my logbook with Bob in a

Diamond DA-42. This was super exciting for me to experience a taste of modern aviation in one of my favorite twin engine air-

crafts, and gain one hour closer to my first solo! On the 26th, I was able to participate in the EAA Young Eagles Flights, a day to get

kids and teens who are interested in aviation into a cockpit! I was able to meet new people interested in aviation, and see people

get in a small plane for the first time with a smile on their face. Later that day, George’s friend took me for a ride in an RV-6 he had

built, which was such an enjoyable short experience, pulling positive and negative G’s! Since then, I have started overhaling a Con-

tinental O'200 with George. This was such a great month!

Ben Sibold, High School Aviator

This month I went on my first flight lesson at the Franklin County airport and got to volunteer on Young Eagles Day. I enjoyed my

first flight lesson a lot and thought that I flew well for my first time at that airport. Franklin County was the shortest airport that I

had ever flown into or out of, and was very different from my past experiences at Burlington. I have flights scheduled for every-

other week and am looking forward to getting the rust off and improving my knowledge and skills. In a few weeks I have my first

longer cross country scheduled, and am excited to see how it will go. Outside of flying, I have been busy with school and swim

practice. I have my first swim meet this weekend and am excited to see my times compared to how they were pre-Covid.

CHAPTER 613 October 2021

Terrell Houston, High School Aviator!

This month I had the pleasure of flying during EAA Young Eagle Day at KSFO. I flew in Cessna 172, a four seater with my sister and

mother, as well as the pilot, John Fitzgerald. I was there as an escort to help people get to their planes.

Sage Maynard, High School Aviator

Although this month has been super stressful it has been one of the best yet, School is just starting to feel normal and more oppor-

tunities are opening up. I am currently working with my school to improve the support given to the girls sports teams. After notic-

ing the lack of support they receive compared to the boys I decided something needed to change. I have my first flight lesson with

Tony on October 10th, I’m so excited to finally get started!

Instructor’s Corner: Ed Scott

Except for a stint in the Army, and a winter barnstorming, I’ve always flown part time. I made the decision that a career in aviation

wasn’t for me long-ago after a burn-out year in the Army. It’s in my DNA however, and I gradually got back in. I bought a J-3 Cub,

reinstated my lapsed CFI, and ever since I've been a "recreational" pilot.

So I fly and instruct for fun. I love light planes, and I especially enjoy the people I’ve met in aviation. Through the Young Aviators

program, I’ve flown with Mara, an exceptional, multi-talented person who has brought me some of the most memorable events in

instructing, Emma, from my neck of the woods, the Creek Road in Irasburg, who never gives up, and now Ishir, a very ambitious

young guy who just soloed at MPV on a beautiful, wind-free day, with three perfect landings.

I don’t know how many students I've soloed or recommended for check rides. They’ve been spread out over so many years that,

rather than the count, I remember the individuals who have contributed more to my life than the hours of flying they represent.

There are many instructors who have given more dual, and my total flight time is not enough to impress anyone, but I don’t have

to go through my log books to remember my students.

There have been mutterings at the FAA about limiting renewals for older, part-time instructors, but we can still make a contribu-

tion. I won’t be doing this forever, but until that time comes, meeting new people, flying with Ishir, continuing to fly with Mara,

meeting a brave little girl at the YE event, are all part of my life as a recreational pilot.

Frasca Flight Training Device Update by Kyle Bedard, CFI

Hi folks, I took a bit of time yesterday to update the navigation databases in the Frasca FTD. I use it frequently to maintain my in-

strument currency, so I figured that it would be a nice way to give back to the chapter. I purchased a one-year subscription, so I will

update it periodically as I pass through. There are at least a few changes to local approaches since the database was last updated in

2016, so it’ll be a useful tool for staying fresh around here.

One small annoyance with this is that the newer nav databases include an additional one-time update to the magnetic variation

database, which the G1000 seems to have an issue taking (it is a known issue that requires pulling a breaker to a specific unit in

actual aircraft, which does not seem to be possible in the Frasca). I’ve put a note on the device to decline the update on startup - it

goes away and everything works fine, though it does pop up every time you fire up the G1000. I’m planning on reaching out to

Frasca to see what the process is to go about installing the update.

Take care! Kyle Bedard, CFI, CFII, MEI 802-318-2242 (call/text)

Our heartfelt thanks to Kyle for providing a much needed database update to Chapter 613’s Frasca FTD!
