What’s up Austin!!! Wecome to our 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY ISSUE!!!! I’m sure it feels like it’s been a while since we released our last issue, cuz...... it has been a while. It may seem like we took a long vaca-tion since our popular Oct-Nov Issue, but that’s far from the truth. Since then, we have continuously interviewed major acts such as CLUTCH, MUTEMATH, LOWER CLASS BRATS, VOODOO GLOW SKULLS, REBELUTION, ZEALE along with interviews from Fun Fun Fun Fest such as YOUTH BRIGADE, M83, PUBLIC ENEMY, THE LIZARD MAN, and GRAHAM WILLIAMS (founder of Fun Fun Fun Fest).... and if the interview isn’t on this issue, you can definitely find it on ATXMusicMag.com.

I was also in the process of launching a new magazine in the Rio Grande Valley, called nothing other than..... RGV Music Mag. If you’re curious to see what kind of content there is in “El Valle”, you can check out the digital version of the launch issue at www.RGVMusicMag.com.

Since it’s our 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY ISSUE, we’ve decided to throw our 2nd Annual SX Showcase at HEADHUNTERS again, coincidentally on March 12th again! Last year, we managed to pack the place and the magazine had only been launched for 1 week or so, therefore we definitely expect for it to get even crazier this year.... During SX Week, we’ll also be covering Rob Hick’s Austin Metal Promotions Showcase, Eye in the Sky’s Future of Music Showcase, ACM’s Indie 512 Showcase, The Altercation Records Showcase and all the info for these shows can be found on this issue.

We’ll also be covering TEXAS INDEPENDENCE FEST from March 2-4 at The Cotton Gin in Maxwell, Texas and it promises to be an epic time featuring bands such as Hyde Park Showdown, Killing in Apathy,

Critical Assembly, Headcrusher, Clyde and Clem’s Whiskey Business, Upon a Burning Body, Snake Skin Prison, Amplified Heat, Fair to Midland, East Cameron Folkore, and Javi Garcia and the Cold Cold Ground.

Cheers,Jeremy J. Davis

Three years after the release of their successful debut full length, Chase the White Whale, Driver Friendly knew some-thing had to change. The music industry was shifting, their lives were headed in separate directions, the future of the band was in question. The band was at a crossroads: call it quits after nine years of making music together or do some-thing drastic. The answer was a retreat to a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains. A place where they could create without distractions or limitations. A place where they prom-ised they wouldn’t leave until they had a new album ready to be recorded.

With the help of an avid, loyal fanbase, Kickstarter, and producer Jim Vollentine, they raised the funds necessary to record and release their newest album, Bury a Dream. The 11 new songs on the record replicate the high-energy and soaring, melodic hooks of past releases, but also reflect a bold evolution in the band’s songwriting capabilities. The ti-tle at first reading may appear ominous, predicting the end of something great. Yet it merely hides the full lyric, “Bury a dream, watch it grow,” declaring that dreams can die, but sometimes they must pass away in order to grow into some-thing entirely new and beautiful.

Driver Friendly is a band reborn with a new found sense of urgency to get their music to as many ears as possible. Look for them this summer on an extensive national tour and the international release of the album April, 10 2012.

The Quitters come from the desolate valley of Las Vegas, NV, where old musicians come to die. If you happen to be a fan of Bad Religion, Refused, John Coltrane, and Whitney Houston all rolled into one, then The Quitters are for you. Originally a power trio of punks consisting of Marq Roqsberg on bass and lead vocals, Tommy AK on guitar and back-up vocals, and Miqah Mayhem on drums and back-up vocals, The Quitters recruited their bro Dizzle to strap on a guitar and scream his lungs out in December of 2011. There was no audition process: it was either Dizzle was playing guitar or the trio would remain a trio. Since the addition of Dizzle, The Quitters have been getting their shit together, opening for bands like Death By Stereo and The Heroine (from San Antonio, TX ya’ll). They remain a mainstay in the Las Vegas punk scene with a growing crowd of loyal “Quitheads” (OK, so nobody calls them that, but it’s funny). In August of 2011 The Quitters received the award for Best Punk Band of Las Vegas at the Vegas Rocks! Magazine Awards show held at the Hilton, which featured many has-been artists such as Vince Neil and Sebastian Bach getting Lifetime Acheive-ment Awards. Still quite an honor to be able to say that The Quitters are award-winning, right? The boys are still riding strong on their latest album “No Big Deal” which can be ob-tained through iTunes and Spotify… or you can download a couple of sample tracks that they released to the magazine last SXSW, so now you have no excuse to not check them out, SON!! Look for The Quitters to be invading Headhunters for the second year in a row as well as Altercation Records Kickoff Bash at Frontier Bar the next day.... Be sure to catch them before the world explodes (which by the way, The Quitters will have a hand in)!!!!

BIO

Isle of White is an alternative rock group consisting of mem-bers Kyle Welch(bass), Lance Alexander(drums) and Dan-iel Stone(vocals/guitar) from Austin, Texas. Among many, their influences range from Weezer, Muse, The Strokes, and Duran Duran. They place an emphasis on crafting a good song, that captivates the listener first and foremost. Alexan-der and Stone initiated a song writing partnership that has existed since high school.

They recorded their first EP together in early 2009 at Big Or-ange Studios with Sound Team/TV Torso’s Matt Oliver, who gave them experience in creating a large sound in a studio setting. Alexander then departed for Brownsville, the pair’s hometown until 2010. Stone remained in Austin, playing with other band members in an attempt to garner a fan-base in Austin. Following other musical ventures pursued by the two, they decided to again write as Isle of White in late 2010. Kyle Welch, bass player from New York, brought his technical and musical expertise to the band.

The three formed a rock trio, each allowing their own influ-ences to show strongly in an attempt to create a powerful sound. In August of 2011 the three met with David Butler of Suite 709, who recorded their first full length album. The sessions led to songs such as “Hard to Find”, “All Around the World” and “Break Your Heart”. Currently, Isle of White is promoting their first full length album, always looking to expand their sound and reach.

From meager means to mounting momentum, the past 3 years have spelled nothing but progress for Austin-outfit Vinyl Dharma. The band’s knack for pouring layered elec-tronica atop sultry vocals – presented by lead singer Johnny Dharma – amounts to an epic live show of pulsing, dance-inducing electronica. Outfitted with a strong array of ring-ers, such as “Our Big Escape,” “London,” “Alone we Sleep,” and “The Bottom of the Sea,” the band’s launch from idyllic South Texas to coveted main stages and a Friday night resi-dency in “the live music capital of the world,” Austin, Texas, has become a journey of inventiveness and personal poise.Reviving the new wave drawl of New Order and The Cure, as well as melding elements of bands like Doves, Radio-head, Depeche Mode, The Verve, The Beatles, Vinyl Dhar-ma’s sound has a clear air of electricity. With the upcoming release of their Self Produced 2nd EP, and a sweeping vic-tory on MTV2’s “Band on the Rise” contest behind them, Vi-nyl Dharma is a band with new found success and bound-less prospects. Upon winning the MTV2 contest, the band impressed the major music channel enough to have them visit Austin to film the band’s live performance at Stubb’s and capture the essence of their daily lives for on-air pro-mos. The on-air promos aired heavily nation-wide through out November & December of 2009. For those of you that have been waiting for new music from the band, their much anticipated and soon to be released 2nd EP will be released December 1st 2011 on iTunes. The 2nd EP plainly titled “Our Big Escape,” is anything but that. Rather it is a prime example of this band’s unique musical color, great taste and their ever-evolving wall of sound. Vinyl Dharma will never fail to produce great music. This EP will be the candy to your ears.

Murderama are a three piece rock n roll band now based in San Antonio Texas. They are currently about three quar-ters through their debut album and it shouldn’t be long be-fore it hits a local record store near you. Since 2010, they’ve opened up for acts like The Reverend Horton Heat, The Buzzcocks (UK), The Brains (Canada), The Creepshow (Can-ada), The Dollyrots, The Henchmen, Koffin Kats, Three Bad Jacks, The Chop Tops, and The Mean Mean Men. They sure plan on making the TATA Girls go crazy too.

They are an Austin Texas based band, and have a knack for writing good catchy tunes, complemented by their lyri-cal harmonies. The band consists of James, the kangaroo wrestler, on bass, Rex, the son of an alien, on drums, and Tommy, the illegitimate son of John Travolta and Elizabeth Taylor, on guitar and vocals. They’ve been playing live for lesss than a year and already sound like a seasoned bunch. They plan on coming out with an EP in the near future, and will be coming out with a liquid explosion, opening up the SX Showcase at Headhunters at 7:30...... BE THERE!!!

There are times when a man needs nothing more than a blast of beer chugging rock music, and that’s exactly what you get from Texas band Thunderosa. They have played with several national acts such as Adler’s Appetite, Rev. Horton Heat, Nashville Pussy, Southern Culture on the Skids, Texas Hippie Coalition, Mike Ness (Social Distortion), Brand New Sin, ZEKE, Hank III, Jackson Taylor & The Sinners, Hed PE, and Chevelle. They also just got a new licensing deal with Red Glare Records, and they plan on releasing their new album on CD and Vinly this coming Fall.

Sour Bridges are an indie-folk/rock band. Born in south Austin, TX in the year of 2009; the band has taken an old time country feel to a next level. With roots from all over the country, Sour Bridges has an interesting combination of Texas folk, Appalachian bluegrass, and rock and roll.

With five full-time members, each multi-instrumentalists brings a wide variety of character and prowess to the ta-ble. The fiddle, banjo, mandolin combination is the perfect accompaniment to a rustic strumming acoustic guitar. Their raw and natural sound is captured even when plugged in and on stage. Another key element of Sour Bridges are the earthy tones and tender back-up vocals. With three and sometimes four part harmonies blending together, a simple, wholesome, and unique sound is an essential element in their music. An a capella breakdown or chant-a-long is al-ways in the set list.

Sour Bridges released their first full length album in 2010 called Workin’ on Leavin’. they are currently performing all around Austin and south Texas. Sour Bridges are: Bill Pucci, Matt Pucci, Kat Wilkes, Dalton Chamblee, and Jack Bridges.

Out of sunny South Padre Island, TX are Los Loco Locals who possess a sound that is a fine blend of dub reggae, surf rock, and punk. Their upbeat, in-your-face stage presence and wide range of sound are capable of setting the mood for anything from the drink you order after work to the bar fight that ensues a couple of hours later.

After forming in the fall of 2008 they began to entertain, and occasionally terrorize, audiences throughout the Rio Grande Valley with their powerful lyrics, groovy rhythms, and psychedelic guitar riffs. Since their inception Los Loco Locals have garnered an ever growing fan base through-out South Texas with the intentions of spreading their sound further north beginning with Austin, TX.

The band recently had their debut release; a three song single entitled The Line Up, through Cutback Records with a release show held at Galeria 409 in Brownsville, TX. They currently plan to release a full album as early as this coming April.

interview with bones delarge

frontman

of

ATXMM: Last time we saw you guys was with Sloppy Seconds at Red 7 this past Summer… What’s LCB been up to since then and what have been your fa-vorite shows to play since then?

BONES: Well, let’s see, the ones that I can remem-ber off the top of my head are: couple of gigs with The Generators from Cali-fornia and we played on Black Friday @ Emo’s right before they closed (RIP) w/ The Queers. Oh yeah, also the last Saturday of FREE WEEK at Red 7, that was insane. Maybe a few more...

ATXMM: Your most recent show was at Punx Picnic at the Music Ranch… How was the experience, and what’s your take on this growing event?

BONES: Yeah, the Punx Pic-nic fest. was on the week-end we went in Sweatbox Stuidos to track the new

songs. We were only able to be there for our allot-ted time to play a set and then leave. Only because we were still paying for studio time. We had a fun crowd and everyone was in good spirits. I can see it being a pretty cool event down the line.

ATXMM: You just recently added EVO back in the lineup. How has it been to play and write with an old LCB member?

BONES: EVO’s last couple of gigs with us were in July 2008 with Rancid. Al-most 4 years. It’s nice to play with him again. He’s a strong bass player and has always added a lot to the band in the past. It’s been really good.

ATXMM: LCB just recently released a track on a com-

pilation through PUNKAID.ORG… Can you tell us a little bit about that move-ment and which track was released?

BONES: Banda Aceh, In-donesia is a strict Islamic Shariah region. And in mid-December of last year over 60 punk rock fans in Aceh, Indonesia got ‘detained’ and sent to a “Re-Education” camp where they had their head’s shaved, clothes stripped away and forced to prey so “Their morals will match those of other Acehnese peo-ple.” You can read more about it here:

And you can download this 72 band comp for only $6.00 starting March 1st at:http://punkaid.org/

ATXMM: You just recently launched LCBArmy.com…. What can fans expect out of the site?

BONES: That website is a maze! There’s so much to look at. We gotta give prop’s to Christopher Watson Design & Co. for everything! We’re really proud!

ATXMM: All of your loyal fans are anticipating the new album coming out… What’s it going to be called and what should the LCB fans expect from it? More old-school influenced or will it be a bit more pro-gressive?

BONES: The name of the new record is “Rock ‘N’ Roll Street Noize”. It will be six new songs on both CD format and 12” vinyl w/ download card. Classic L.C.B.!! I like the tunes, but you’ll just have to judge for yourself...

ATXMM: Who is currently producing this new album and why was the decision made to go back to TUR-KEY BASTER RECORDS after all these years?

BONES: We are producing the record. Which is what we did back in the old days and the fans seem to like it. I got in touch

with Rick and happened to be in the right place at the right time that he wanted to start his record label up again. Proud that we get to be his first release back!!

ATXMM: Your most re-cent single, “Americas Standard”, will be on the new album… along with “Thoughts About You”…. Which are off of the THOUGHTS ABOUT YOU EP. Should the fans expect the same versions or were they re-recorded for the new EP?

BONES: They are both re-recorded. The “Thought’s About You” 7” was re-leased in France by Com-bat Rock Records and only 500 were pressed. Not many made it to the States.

ATXMM: When do you plan on dropping the new EP?

BONES: This Spring!

ATXMM: Will LCB be going on tour after the EP is re-leased and where are you planning on touring to? Or are you going to wait til the next LP is out?

BONES: We’ll be leaving this Summer for just a few weeks to support the EP and then coming back home to brass tacks on the new full-length. Right now we’re looking at the west coast. Up to Seattle and back.

voodoo glow skulls

Since their inception in 1988, Voodoo Glow Skulls have rightfully earned recognition globally through their unique style of punk and hardcore ska with a Mexican twist, giving them dibs in Southern Cali-fornia as pioneers of ska-punk. Straight out of Riverside, CA, founding members and brothers Frank, Eddie, and Jorge Casillas, played numerous backyard parties and shows in their early days with legends The Dickies, Angry Samoans, Murphy’s Law, and Mighty Mighty Bosstones to name a few. Their DIY work ethic and humble attitude has subsequently taken them very far in the punk rock world.

Having released eight albums, and now their ninth, entitled “Break The Spell”, the Skulls continue to write hardnosed ska-punk that sounds like no other band. Yes, there are bands that have horn

and woodwind sections along with punk riffs, but the Skulls have really defined a style that shreds any time you hear it. And along with rocking on stage, they are very humble and hardworking. Actually, you’d be surprised at how soft spoken they are, which is way cool in my book.

At the moment they are on a U.S. tour playing 39 dates for their new album “Break The Spell.” The tour is “Black Coffee, White Knuckles” and with them is Authority Zero out of Arizona, whom Voodoo feels is a very powerful live perfor-mance to be reckoned with. Happily, we had the opportunity to have a Q & A with the Skulls, talking about touring, politics, punk rock, and even touring tips. Here’s what Eddie Casillas of Voodoo had to say:

INTERVIEWwith lead guitarist Eddie Casillas of Voodoo Glow Skulls

ATXMM: Your first U.S. tour was in 1990, did you hit up Austin? Tell us about your first show in Austin: who did you play with? Where did you play? Was it your first time in Austin?

VGS: Our first show in Austin was at the Cavity Club, a few doors down from Emos. I remember there were big rats and fleas in that place and it was a real punk, squat type of club. We slept in our van right behind the club in the alley and some the dudes may have slept on the car-peted stage in the club. I don’t remember who we played with though…it was our first time in Austin.

ATXMM: How has tour changed now from when you first started? What has remained the same on tour?

VGS: More people know the band now after all these records and touring so that definitely has helped us establish an audience and some-what of a draw. That has changed mostly. Not many changes as far as the traveling routine etc. but we’re just more experienced and have come across most obstacles or problems tour-ing. We usually know how to deal with all the little issues or problems that come with touring.

ATXMM: What advice would you give bands who want to tour and have no idea where to start?

VGS: It’s pretty difficult to just book a tour and head out without being established or known. A good way is to establish yourself locally then maybe get on support slots opening for touring bands. If you got something and draw well, usu-ally you can start hooking up with other bands and start exchanging shows and branching out to nearby cities. Putting out good music with decent distribution helps!

ATXMM: The new album, “Break The Spell”, was released on “Smelvis records”, and from I under-stand it is a very small operation; tell us a little about that. Who’s involved?

VGS: Our good friend Elvis Cortez from the band Left Alone from LA, has had a little indy punk label for years and has done over 40 releases. We didn’t really feel like shopping our newly recorded album around for a record deal and

deal with having to sell ourselves to record la-bel A&R types. We just decided since it’s pretty easy to sell music independently these days, we would just go back to basics and release it on our friend’s label.

ATXMM: What inspiration(s) would you say pushed through this album, “Break The Spell?”

VGS: The last four years of life definitely are a big par of this record and its influence. I didn’t think we would ever finish the recordings and it was a slow process from the initial demos and drum tracks to the final lyrics and mixes. From relationship drama, family issues, deaths close to the band, pot, politics and various musical influences the band had a lot to write and play about this time around.

ATXMM: You’ve been known to sing about politi-cal subject matter: What pisses you guys off these days in the political spectrum? What are your views on the State of The Union? What would you like to tell your fans to keep an eye out for?

VGS: It seems like we’re always voting on the lesser of two evils at best. It’s so hard to trust politicians in general and you never know who is really on the level at all. Seems like the rich are getting richer while the poor are getting more poor and desperate. The government has always been about the wealthy and powerful, watch out for the MAN, he’ll get you!

ATXMM: Where do you see Voodoo in the distant future?

VGS: It’s hard to look too far ahead in the future, as a band at least. We’ve done it for so long at the diy level without much promotion or hype or commercial radio. We’re glad to have a brand new record that we’re proud of and are happy to have a decent year of shows booked.

ATXMM: Any last words for your Austin fans before your show at Beauty Bar; shout-outs?

VGS: We’re very excited as always to get back to Austin and see some old personal friends and get down and dirty at the rock show. Who do Voodoo we do?!

Peace of Mind Tour @ STUBBSWriter: LazarusInterviewer: Jorge Cano

Santa Barbara natives Rebelution made their mark at Stubbs BBQ on February 10th, yet again. With a sold out crowd this could have possibly turned into a two night show. The release of their latest album “Peace of Mind” generates a reggae rock fusion sound. Lead singer Eric Rachmany’s vocals carry on a smooth sound that keeps every song catchy.

As bassist Marley Williams danced around and strummed that first chord, the stage quickly filled up with smoke. Not only play-

ing songs off their latest album like, “Sky Is the Limit”, tracks were played off “Bright Side of Life” and “Courage to Grow” as well. This was a night with no worries and good music. Rebelution is more than just your typical reggae band. With their captivating songs and keen attitude towards their fan base, their collaboration is one of a kind.

We also had the privelige of getting an inter-view with drummer, Wesley Finney while they were touring the West Coast. Check out what he had to say....

INTERVIEWwith drummer Wesley Finney of Rebelution

ATXMM: Interesting name, who came up with it ?

REBELUTION: It was just a play on words with the terms revolution and rebel. We had the goal to put a positive spin on the word rebel, change in the name of good. It was short and catchy and has seemed to work!

ATXMM: How do you guys tour? By van, bus, plane, managers station wagon?

REBELUTION: We tour by bus, ten guys on a metal spaceship on wheels. Whenever we get to our destination we try to get out and do things since we’re so cooped up. We also tow a big trailer with our gear and merchandise, which recently caught on fire in Boston.

ATXMM: Where has been your favorite place to play on your current tour thus far, and which des-tination do you always look forward to playing?

REBELUTION: Those answers are one and the same - The Norva in Virginia. It’s a really nice venue with an accommodating staff, and the backstage has a hot tub, sauna, basketball court, laundry, etc. Every band looks forward to it on their tour guaranteed.

ATXMM: Beer vs. Liquor?

REBELUTION: There’s a time and place for both. I love IPAs and brown ales but if I’m looking for a buzz before the show I’ll make a vodka mixer.

ATXMM: 80’s hair metal vs. 90’s grunge move-ment?

REBELUTION: 90’s grunge was more serious and had a more lasting impact but 80’s hair metal can be fun for a moment.

ATXMM: Playstation vs Xbox?

REBELUTION: Original Nintendo. Everything

else takes up too much time when you should be outside.

ATXMM: The song “ feeling alright” seems to be a fan favorite..i really enjoy your music writing on “green to black” also. Did growing up in Santa Barbara influence your reggae style, and if not, what exactly was it?

REBELUTION: Santa Barbara definitely has a decent reggae scene. There would be bigger roots-reggae acts coming through the club scene and then there would be cover/young bands like us playing in the college area. Liv-ing by the ocean in California also adds to the influence.

ATXMM: What other influences do you have that might not be so quick to understand when listen-ing to a REBELUTION track?

REBELUTION: To be honest, in my own time I don’t listen to a lot of reggae. I personally listen to a lot of heavy rock or underground hip-hop. I’d like to think that those influences come through in my drumming by not being conventional.

ATXMM: What’s your take on the Austin Music Scene, or just the city in general?

REBELUTION: The Austin music scene is alive and kicking! We love coming to Austin for many reasons: the wide music variety, great food, and many interesting bars and night-life destinations. We look forward to rocking Stubb’s again on this tour which never gets old.

ATXMM: Any Shout outs?

REBELUTION: Yeah big ups to Stubb’s for having us back, our agent and Austin resident Aaron Pinkus for booking us there, Episode Phive for always taking great photos of the show, and local band Subrosa Union for keeping it real!

Lyrically, this album is the darkest, most honest and straight-forward the band has ever been. And who can blame them? Starting with the disas-trous fallout between them, to the death of longtime producer/friend Jerry Finn, to the near-death experience of Barker-- they’ve been through a hell of a lot in the past decade. There are songs that are reminiscent of their early work, and songs that reflect what these musicians have been experi-menting with lately. Overall, ‘Neighborhoods’ is more than just an album consisting of one random song after another. It’s a journey that really lets us know what these three musicians have been up to and what tragedies and turbulences they’ve had to overcome. At the same time though, it’s fun, weird, and dare I say… epic?

First impression, southern flavored indie-rock meets Dire Straits with solid gui-tar slides and interesting country choruses. The 90’s nostalgia of yesteryear is ever present in “White House”, which to me summoned Soundgarden, Ever-clear, with some monster guitar tone. Finally, “Pocketknife”, a brave and eerie tune, displays a darker quality with some pain swallowed back in the form of a whiskey shot. As a first time listener, I’m rather proud to have their tracks as part of my music catalog because I do not have nearly enough music similar to Dalles on the pallet.

With smooth sounds of rock, pop and tropocalia, it’s hard to place Holiday’s unique sound in a specific genre. The release of their debut album, “Things Can Be Different” off of Austin’s own Township Records has created some great hype. The opening song, “Graciela” is such a lovely track that really sticks. Other tracks such as “She Don’t” and “Come Into My Room” have a more upbeat rhythm that can keep you singing along and on your feet. Don’t miss out on any opportunity to watch these guys perform, catch ‘em live and you will be in for a treat.
