Attrition scrubbersMetso attrition scrubbingmachines are simple, yet highlyefficient units for scrubbing parti-cles at densities of 70 - 80%solids.

Two opposed Helix type propellers on eachshaft force particles against each other, resulting in intense scrubbing, polishing anddisintegration. Efficiencies generally increasewith and increase of the density of the pulp,as particles have more frequent grain tograin contact. The twin propellers, mountedon a shaft inside a tank, are supported by aheavy-duty steel structure. Shafts are cou-

ApplicationsAttrition Scrubbers are often used to:

• Remove iron surface from sandparticles• Deliminate clay, graphite or other plalet,

tabular structures

• Washing Polyethylene Tetra Phthalate(PET) plastic chips for recycling

• Mixing cement and mine dentainings forback lling underground minded areas.

• Soil washing to scrub contaminants fromsoil surfaces.

pled to either gearbox or spindle bearingdrives. Feed and outlet boxes are integral oransed with the tank in to the cells as shownin the drawing on the next page. An open-ing in each cell partition allows pulp to owthrough the machine. Machines are usuallysupplied with two, four or six cells, witheach cell ranging in volume from 4 to 9900liter’s. (1cubic foot to 359 cubic foot). Oddcell arrangements are also available as cus-tom supply.

Propellers The Helix propeller is very effective in provid-ing the vertical and radical forces for maxi-mum scrubbing. Two six-bladed propellersare mounted on each shaft to provideopposed pumping forces. One propeller hasslightly greater blade pitch than the other,

which causes the pulp to be pumped fromcell to cell.

Flow alternates introduction to the cells byway of over and under openings in the baf-es between the succesive cells eliminatingshort circuiting.

The propeller design eliminates destructivecavitating action, which provides extendedwear life. Nonetheless, in many applicationsthe degree of wear expected makes it neces-sary to use special materials. While cast ironpropellers are often specied, and for highlyabrasive or corrosive duties, coverings, suchas rubber and neoprene are specied forprops and shafts.

DrivesSpindle bearing drives are used on cell sizefrom 11” x 11” (279 x 279 mm) through 40” x

40” (1016 x 1016 mm). On larger units,speed-reducer gearbox drives are offered, giving a more compact arrangement fortransmitting the higher horsepowerrequired.

Tanks Tanks are of fabricated steel constructionwith abrasion-resistant steel plate liners.

Cover plates are tted, and partition bafflesare located between cells to help direct pulpows. Rubber or other elastomer linings canbe supplied for abrasive or corrosive duties.

Support Structures The mechanism support is a rigidly bracedformed steel plate. The motormount is

adjustable.

Two-stage scrubbing as practiced in sand-plants, to liberate bituminous or carbona-ceous matter and clays in the production ofspecication sand.

Potash crystals where clay must be dis-inte-grated prior to washing, and where removalof slime coatings greatly improves or isessential to otation recovery.

Polishing sand grain surfaces to remove ironstains and disintegrate clay fractions, prior tootation.
