a great day out in snowdonia

This tour takes you around the southern part of the Snowdonia National Park, where thedramatic mountains drop virtually into the sea.

First stop should be the castle at Harlech, themost dramatic castle built by Edward1. The castle dominates the town and there aresuperb views of the Llyn Peninsula andTremadog Bay.

Travel along the estuary, through the village ofMaentwrog to Plas Tan y Bwlch, the SnowdoniaNational Park Centre. This stunning building is setin the oak clad hills of the Vale of Ffestiniog.

Recently work has been undertaken on the gardensat Plas Tan y Bwlch and they are now accessiblefor all.

Climb aboard the Ffestiniog Railway - the trainclimbs nearly 700ft as it passes woods, waterfallsand lakes on its way from the harbour town of Porthmadog to the slate quarrying town ofBlaenau Ffestiniog.

South to King Arthur’s Labyrinth, at Corris CraftCentre, for an unforgettable subterranean journeythrough a waterfall into the spectacular caverns,where tales of Arthur and Welsh legends are told.

The drive through Cwmystwyth has been describedas one of the most scenic in Wales and the hillsand valleys of Pumlumon offer superb walking.For a more leisurely day explore the ravines andcascades at historic Devil’s Bridge and visitLlywernog Silver-Lead Mine, which has beenlovingly restored to its Victorian splendour.

Take the steam train down the valley to Aberystwyth,this university town is the largest in Mid Wales.The National Library of Wales stands on a hill highabove the town. At the very heart of Welsh Culture,the Library has some of the greatest treasures ofWales and features a changing series of exhibitions,events and displays throughout the year.

For the last 25 years, much of the Ceredigioncoastline has been designated Heritage Coast.It is an outstanding and internationally importantarea for marine wildlife. Travel south and enjoythe views or take a boat trip out into the bay.

Just north of Cardigan, the ancient county town ofCeredigion, is the Felinwynt Rainforest Centre.The centre has a wonderful display of free-flyingtropical butterflies in natural surroundings and aRainforest Exhibition. A gift shop and café sellingmouthwatering home-made food make this is aninviting place to visit.

Devils Bridge

Softly rounded hills, green farmland, lakes andvalleys, pretty market towns valleys – all makeup the landscape of the Welsh Marches – the Border Country.

Start your journey in the market town ofWelshpool. Once the home farm of the Powisestate, Coed y Dinas is now a Home andCountry Centre housing a wealth of productswhich include plants, crafts and gifts.

Further south is the vibrant small town ofLlanidloes. At the centre of the town is theblack and white 17th Century Market Hall.

One of the highlights of a visit to Mid Walesis to see the red kites wheeling in the skiesabove Gigrin Farm. Daily feeding attracts thebirds and people throughout the year.

Not far away is the Hall at Abbey-Cwm-Hir, aromantic and magnificent Victorian GothicRevival Mansion. All 52 rooms are burstingwith interior design ideas and collectionsincluding clocks, phonographs, china andmuch more. The Hall is set in beautiful groundsand overlooks the ruins of a Cistercian Abbey.

8. Devil’s Bridge Falls & LlywernogSilver Lead Mine Pumlumon, Aberystwyth, CeredigionThe hills of Pumlumon offer superb rambling. For a less strenuous day, explore the ravinesand cascades at historic Devil’s Bridge Falls, or the forest trails for walkers and mountain-bikers at Bwlch Nant yr Arian. Deep in the Ystwyth valley lies Hafod, a Paradise ofwoodlands, waterfalls and scenic walks laid out in the “Picturesque” style in the 18thcentury. Visitors can choose their own route along its ten miles of waymarked paths, orarrange to join a guided walk. You can find out more about Pumlumon’s rich mining heritage at the Llywernog Silver-Lead Mine, where a guided tour takes you underground.
