May 18-20, 2012 is a great weekend to come down to GYC! Our neighbors are hosting the Gulfport Music Fest scheduled at Jones Park. The club is a great spot to hear all the good bands and avoid the crowd, with a bird’s eye view over looking the harbor. Our Tiki Bar will be serving food until 9:00PM, both Saturday and Sunday! Make sure you have your GYC car sticker as we will have Security posted at the entrance of the parking lot.

Commodore’s Report:
Ladies Auxiliary Happenings:
As I sat down to write my report for May, I asked myself, where does the time go? We can chalk up another suc-cessful month at the GYC! April was a very busy month with plenty of activities catered to the entire family. The Entertainment Committee hosted the first Annual Jamai-can Night which was a big hit with great food and atten-dance. Easter Sunday proved to be nothing short of a huge success. I have received numerous compliments about the food and services provided by our staff. Although, Mother Nature did not do her part, the GYC Crawfish Boil was still a success and well attended; how about the size of those crawfish? I would like to thank the Staff, Committees and the GYC Volunteers who helped make these events a big hit.
I know everyone has busy schedules but mark your calen-dars for the upcoming events at the club. The schedule of events can be found in the Log Sheet as well as online.
As summer approaches, I would like to remind all mem-bers that there will be numerous children on the property so please drive slowly and carefully through the parking lot.

Attention All Slip HoldersThe Docks & Piers Committee is in the process of updating all slip holder information. It is very important you send in your updated information in case there is an emergency regarding your vessel. 1. Please fill out both pages of the newly revised “Slip Ap-plication” which can be found on the GYC Website under the ‘Marina’ tab and either mail in or drop off at the club.2. Please send in your updated insurance information along with “Slip Application”.
REMINDER of a few Docks & Piers rules:--Any slip holder wishing to install a boat hoist must submit a request to the Docks & Piers Committee and ultimately be voted on by the Board.--Any slip modifications / piling work must be approved by the Docks & Piers Committee after a properly submitted re-quest has been made.--Any slip holder wishing to install a dock box must seek ap-proval from the Docks & Piers Committee as there are certain criteria already established for dock boxes.
Any questions please contact:Michael G. Hage, Docks & Piers Chairman

After socializing with a glass of wine at our April meeting, members enjoyed a spectacular meal planned and prepared by Chef Ryan. It consisted of beef tenderloin stuffed with sea-food dressing, smashed garlic red potatoes, bacon wrapped asparagus, summer salad with
roasted pistachios, goat cheese, grapefruit, and walnut balsamic dressing. For dessert, we enjoyed delicious 5 layer chocolate cake. Hostesses were Dot Carter, Betty Conn,Dean Hunter and were assisted by Joyce Doleac. Bridge winners were Maybelle Dukes and Lib Jobe. All eyes and ears were on Frank Basket of the Harrison County Sheriff ’s Department as he presented a most informative program on staying safe in the home in to-day’s times.
Sam V., our Sailing Director, is setting up a Female Sailing Clinic to be held this summer. Our Auxiliary gave his program $500.00 toward the expense of hiring a female traveling coach. We hope this will raise the level of our sailing in 2012.
The Gulfport Yacht Club Ladies Auxiliary along with the other Gulf Coast Yacht Clubs is supporting the Leukemia Cup Regatta and the endeavor to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. We will “sell” paper sailboats for donations of $1, $5, $10. The funds collected will make research possible to help find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. Our collection will be from April 25th, to May 23rd. Please consider buying a boat if you see someone from the Aux-iliary selling them and look for your boat displayed in the club.
We hope all members will bring their mothers, daughters, granddaughters, and grandmothers to our Mother/Daughter luncheon on May 23. Please make your reservations for this spe-cial occasion with our secretary Camille Williams. Phone: 228-896-8065 Email: [email protected]

COOKING OFF THE STERN:
I hope everyone is geared up and ready for an exciting summer at GYC. The warm weather brings out families, smiles and fun in the sun. This year please help me wel-come all the new members that recently joined the Club. It is exciting seeing new faces utilizing our facilities. The Tiki Bar will open Friday, May 18th and remain open through Labor Day. The hours of operation set to kick off summer will be Monday through Sunday 10:00am to 6:00pm. If we see there is a need to stay open later on a select few nights of the week we will do so and post through our weekly e-blast. The menu and services were so successful last year very little will change this summer.
This year because of conflicting bookings at the club we will celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Friday, May 04, 6:00pm – 9:00pm. I guess we could re-name it Cuatro de Mayo Kick-Off Celebration to Cinco de Mayo. Regardless, the celebration must go on and we have plenty of great menu selections and activities for the entire family. No a-la-carte dining services this night.
Our GYC Flag Raising Opening Day Regatta is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, 2012. Check out the event schedule on page 2.
A friendly reminder to all the Dads, don’t forget to make reservations for Mother’s Day Brunch, Sunday May 13th. Call Alex early at 228-863-6796, ext 306. Reservations will be required for this Brunch and fill up very quickly. We are offering two seatings, 11:00am and 1:00pm.
I would like to thank the members who loaned us the equipment to cook the crawfish for our 15th Annual Craw-fish Boil and the members who volunteered their services to help cook. The camaraderie for this event was awesome! Under the direction of our Entertainment Chair Kathy Hage it was a fabulous night with plenty of crawfish, cold beer and great live music. Thanks!!
As promised each month I will ask a Trivia question in my letter. The first member who brings me the correct answer in PERSON when dining at the club on a Friday will re-ceive a $20.00 Gift certificate.
Trivia Question for May:In what year did the New Orleans Saints achieve there first winning season? Good Luck!
