Term 4 | Week 2 | 25 October 2019 From the Principal Welcome to the final school term for 2019. Year 12 Graduaon The Year 12 Graduaon, where we formally congratulate and farewell our Year 12 Graduates, was held on Tuesday 22 October. This evening acknowledged and celebrated the important milestone in the lives of our Year 12 students – the end of their secondary schooling. In my address to the graduates, I shared a story about the recent holiday break, where I undertook a small journey distance-wise to undertake research for our family tree. I went to Belalie North, well to what is leſt of it. It was once a thriving small town in the mid-north of South Australia back in the first half of last century. Now there are only a couple of buildings leſt. While the old township was easy to find, some of the places and roads we were looking for were not so easy. Using the navigaon system in the car was also tricky as not all the dirt roads were in the system. On many occasions, as we turned onto another road, the navigaon system would say “Recalculang”. It became a bit of a joke, but the repeon made that word sck in my mind. The navigaon system never said “You’ve gone the wrong way!” or “That’s not the turn I told you to take!” It just said: “Recalculang”. I explained to the Year 12 students that, in many ways, this is important for them to remember as they leave the security of school life and begin their journey through the wide world beyond school. They all need to plan their journeys and have a sense of where they want to go, but they should not be defined by those final Year 12 results or the ATAR. Whatever happens, whatever turn their journey takes, it won’t be wrong, it’ll just be… “recalculang”! As Graduates of Blackwood High School, our Year 12 cohort are prepared, they are ready – even though at mes they may feel uncertain about that. My final words were to be proud of what they have achieved so far, to go forward on their journeys with opmism and the confidence to “recalculate” as the road unfolds before them. On behalf of the Blackwood High School community, I congratulate and extend best wishes to the 2019 Graduates. Term 4 | Week 2 | 25 October 2019

From the PrincipalWelcome to the final school term for 2019.

Year 12 GraduationThe Year 12 Graduation, where we formally congratulate and farewell our Year 12 Graduates, was held on Tuesday 22 October. This evening acknowledged and celebrated the important milestone in the lives of our Year 12 students – the end of their secondary schooling.

In my address to the graduates, I shared a story about the recent holiday break, where I undertook a small journey distance-wise to undertake research for our family tree. I went to Belalie North, well to what is left of it. It was once a thriving small town in the mid-north of South Australia back in the first half of last century. Now there are only a couple of buildings left. While the old township was easy to find, some of the places and roads we were looking for were not so easy. Using the navigation system in the car was also tricky as not all the dirt roads were in the system. On many occasions, as we turned onto another road, the navigation system would say “Recalculating”. It became a bit of a joke, but the repetition made that word stick in my mind. The navigation system never said “You’ve gone the wrong way!” or “That’s not the turn I told you to take!” It just said: “Recalculating”.

I explained to the Year 12 students that, in many ways, this is important for them to remember as they leave the security of school life and begin their journey through the wide world beyond school.

They all need to plan their journeys and have a sense of where they want to go, but they should not be defined by those final Year 12 results or the ATAR. Whatever happens, whatever turn their journey takes, it won’t be wrong, it’ll just be… “recalculating”! As Graduates of Blackwood High School, our Year 12 cohort are prepared, they are ready – even though at times they may feel uncertain about that. My final words were to be proud of what they have achieved so far, to go forward on their journeys with optimism and the confidence to “recalculate” as the road unfolds before them.

On behalf of the Blackwood High School community, I congratulate and extend best wishes to the 2019 Graduates.

2019 Parent/Caregiver Opinion SurveyEach year students, staff and parents/caregivers have an opportunity to provide feedback about their levels of satisfaction in relation to key aspects of the school through an on-line survey. The analysis of this information forms part of the school’s Annual Report, which is presented to the Governing Council and the community and contributes to the school improvement agenda.

Students and staff have been provided with the opportunity to complete the survey at school. Parents/caregivers please find below the link to access the survey. The more people who complete the survey the better the validity of the information provided, which in turn determines the usefulness of that information for our improvement agenda.

Personalised Learning Transition to High School Morning TeaOn Wednesday 16 October Blackwood High School hosted the Annual Year 7 Transition morning tea. This event is a part of the Year 7 transition program for a number of students each year. Year 8 student, Mitchell Pumphrey, shared his transition experience. The presentation was very well received by students and parents/caregivers alike and helped to give a little more information regarding what moving to high school can entail. Mitch addressed common concerns about the transition process and how the school supported him. These included extra opportunities to visit the high school, and a wide variety of Year 8 introductory activities, including Pool Day and the Year 8 camp. Mitch also shared some support strategies his teachers use such as breaking school work down into steps, and modifications of assessment types. The Year 7 students were then taken on a tour of the school lead by Mitchell and Cooper MacDonald.

The school would like to thank Mitchell for his wonderful presentation, Cooper for helping with the tour, and Caroline Armstrong and Nick Kusmanoff, our Personalised Learning SSOs, for their help in setting up the morning tea and supporting students.

Year 8 and 9 updateAs a class, 8B chose to support disadvantaged people as our Service in Action. Our first step was to identify class actions that could help our community. We researched how the action may help and we voted on the actions to choose our goal. We decided to make shoe boxes packed with toiletries and food. As a class we managed to put together four boxes. We made two non - gender specific boxes, one male specific box and one female specific box. We collected the products as a class by everyone bringing in at least one item each. With the help of Sam Thomson, we delivered the male box to Baptist Youth where we helped a young man that could use guidance and extra help. The female box, delivered by Mrs Olenich, went to the Hutt Street Centre and the two non-gender specific boxes, delivered by Cath Gibson, a parent, went to the Western Homelessness Services. We appreciated receiving a letter of thanks from the Hutt Street Centre for our donations and enjoyed the process of giving back to our community.Ella Holmes, Year 8 student

8E have decided to support the Smith Family for our Service in Action. We have organised a Christmas Tree in the resource centre for anyone in the school to donate any new books and toys for children under 12 years old. To help get as many donations as possible, our homegroup split into four groups each handling different jobs - creating posters to put up around the school, writing notes for Daymap to give further details on the dates and why we are doing the toy and book drive, organising with the Smith Family what dates we had to donate the toys and books so the children would receive them before Christmas time, and going around to each class to remind them why we are doing what we’re doing and to give perspective of the children in need. The General Manager of the Smith Family, Graham, came in to talk to us about how the organisation started and became such a successful foundation. He explained why the Smith Family donates toys and books and their program around Christmas time. This improved our understanding and viewpoint on what the families receiving the donations experience. In Week 8 all the books and toys will be taken to the Adelaide Showgrounds to be sorted into age groups. Volunteers help sort the donations over a week, making gift packs with one big toy, one small toy and some books. Once all the gift packs are assigned families, they are delivered. 8E chose to support the Smith Family toy and book drive because we understand how hard it is to find money for Christmas gifts and the Smith Family releases the pressure for families at this time.Ebony Adams and Lauren Buckham, Year 8 students

Year 10 updateIn Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 3, our Year 10 female students participated in the “In The Moment” Program for the first time. The aim of the program is to empower our young women through understanding feminism in a positive way and building their skills to deal with sexism “In the Moment”.

Students discussed barriers to standing up and brainstormed positive and safe ways to deal with scenarios they are confronted with in their lives. This program has been put together over the last 18 months with Blackwood High School’s Ben Dening along with Flinders University Lecturer and Researcher Dr Monique Mulholland overseeing a group of Year 12 students - Ashlyn Dutton, Alie Hughes, Isabella Stocks and Aisha Winter. The bulk of the program was written by the students with only guidance and assistance in coordination from Mr Dening and Dr Mulholland.

The end result devised by the students surpassed all expectations and has inspired close to 40 of the participants to register their interest in presenting the 2020 program to the next group of Year 10 students. Congratulations to the Year 12 students and the Year 10 participants on what they achieved.

Year 11 and 12 updateThe busiest term of the year has arrived for students in the Senior School and the Senior Learning Centre is abuzz with activity. Year 12 students are putting the final touches on their last few assessment tasks as well as busily revising for exams. The Year 11 students are making sure they are getting their timelines right for finishing their Research Project and meeting their deadlines to get one of the biggest tasks of their SACE out of the way so they can concentrate on their Year 12 subjects next year.

This time of the year can be a very stressful time for Year 11 and 12 students however they do have a great support network here at school with the Senior School Team. If you have any concerns at home and you think your child may need some support at school then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Government House ReceptionOn Tuesday 1 October, Emma Potter and Oscar Hunter attended a reception at Government House to celebrate the contribution that Year 12 students have made across the state. We were really pleased to have Oscar and Emma represent Blackwood High School and we appreciate them taking time out of their holidays to attend.

Finally, best of luck to all of the Year 12 students with their final assessment and exams. It has been a pleasure to work with them over the past six months and it has been great to see them grow and achieve this year. All the best!!

As part of the Year 11 Food and Hospitality course we had the privilege of catering for the local Blackwood Rotary Club. The Year 11 students planned the menu, which involved researching appropriate dishes, and the class voted for the top three to be sent to Rotary for the final menu selection. This proved to be eye opening for our students when they needed to consider so many factors including balance of tastes, portion control, visual appeal of the dish, as well as contemporary plating. The Year 11 class was supported by other Blackwood High School students who volunteered to be wait-staff for the night. This included helping to set the tables, serving food and cleaning up. We also had two music teams who performed wonderfully for the Rotary members. There were a number of Blackwood High School staff who kindly helped on the night with supervision of students and many plates cleaned!

The night was a huge success, with students having an authentic learning experience which has helped them better understand what working in the hospitality industry can be like. This involved the ability to be creative and examine the challenge from a range of different angles, including the pressures of having to get a large number of dishes out at the same time, considering exact plating and correct food temperature for servings. The Rotary Club was extremely impressed with our students and their efforts on the night.

Our Rotary dinners are becoming a tradition with the Food and Hospitality students and we look forward to next year’s opportunity.

Year 11 Legal Studies ExcursionOn Wednesday 18 September, the Year 11 Legal Studies students visited significant Law Institution points in Adelaide. With a focus on Criminal Law, we began our day with a trip to the Adelaide Magistrates Court in Victoria Square. We sat and watched a Magistrate quickly go through cases, most asking for adjournments, it ran like clockwork. That was except for the case where a man and his lawyer were adjourning for the sixth time, for driving without a seatbelt.

After the court adjourned, we got the chance to speak to Gemma, one of the Police Prosecutors. She was kind enough to tell us all about her job and how to get where she was, jokingly saying, “I feel like I’m on stage when there’s an audience”. Did you know that Police Prosecutors don’t know anything about the cases they represent until they read the facts, usually that day? That must be hard when the defendant has a 93-page offence history (which did happen).

After our visit to the Magistrates Court we walked across to the District and Supreme Courts – both of which are in the Sir Samuel Way Building. Much to the disappointment of some of us, the attempted murder trial was suppressed. The one we watched wasn’t nearly as exciting, just a District Court Case where the defendant was charged with possessing a homemade firearm.

After our lunch break, Sam Duluk, Member of the South Australian House of Assembly for Waite (which includes the Blackwood/Eden Hills Area) gave us a tour of Parliament House. Mr Duluk was a great guide sharing detailed knowledge of both chambers and he certainly didn’t hold back when quizzing our knowledge.

The day gave us a great insight into the way South Australian Parliamentary and Judicial Systems operate. The chance to see the system in action gave us a much stronger understanding than reading a textbook ever could.

On 16 August, Blackwood High School Year 12 Health students, and six invited Year 11 students, attended the P.A.R.T.Y. Program (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth) at the Flinders Medical Centre.

This was an incredibly rewarding experience in which both emergency service personnel and trauma injury survivors presented to us the consequences of risk-taking behaviour and how to prevent it among ourselves and our peers. We were also able to participate in hospital rotations in which we played the role of Emergency Doctors and Staff, as well as scenarios which allowed us to experience the struggles of a trauma survivor undergoing occupational therapy. These activities and presentations allowed us to walk away from the day enlightened and empowered with the knowledge to recognise risky choices and actively prevent the trauma accidents that may occur among our friends and peers.

Trauma is the leading cause of death in 15-25 years olds and three quarters of these deaths are considered preventable. If we work together to ensure we all make safe choices, we may be able to reduce these numbers. So please, if you see a friend speeding, drink driving, driving tired or texting on the roads, speak up! As we have seen first hand that risky decisions are never worth the life-impacting consequences.

Arts updateFestival CentreBangarra: 30 years of sixty five thousand is Bangarra Dance Theatre’s landmark 30th anniversary season. This diverse program of three contemporary works displays the passionate storytelling, rich artistry and deep community connections that have made Bangarra the premier Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performing arts company in Australia.

The work watched, Frances Rings’ Unaipon, is an absorbing portrait of the great Aboriginal inventor, philosopher, writer and storyteller, Ngarrindjeri man David Unaipon, who features on the Australian $50 note.

Students participated in a Q and A post-performance in which choreographer Francis Rings spoke about the creative process and research in creating the dance work. Students had the opportunity to interact with the Dancers and learn of their individual journeys in becoming a professional Dancer.

Dance students will be discussing the themes and responding to questions proposed. This will assist them in thinking critically about the work and form personal responses as well as engaging emotionally and imaginatively with the performance, encouraging students to be curious about how these works were inspired and how they impact audiences. AC ArtsThe VET Dance students and Year 10 Dance students attended a performance at AC Arts, performed by the second and third year Dancers titled G. This work was a reconstruction of the Australian Dance Theatres version of G based on the story of Giselle. This highly technical Dance work, including the interactive multi-media, was an inspirational Dance work for students to engage in.

Students will be exploring Australian Dance companies as well as completing review writing of the work.

The VET students, as part of their industry focus in Dance, attended a workshop at Precizion Dance Studios in preparation for their upcoming performance evening, Friday 1 November at Blackwood High School Performing Arts Centre.

Secondary Schools String SymphonyBlackwood High School Middle School Music and String students attended a performance by the touring Secondary Schools String Symphony.

The symphony entertained and educated the audience by playing a repertoire of diverse symphonies including the theme song from Harry Potter. The Blackwood High School String students will have the opportunity to audition for a place in the symphony.

CabaretThe VET Music and Dance students, including assisting artists, Year 10 Music students, performed an evening of Song and Dance at the Blackwood High School Cabaret evening. Music students entertained the audience with their Music sets and the Dancers kept within the theme of cabaret performing their highly skilled Jazz works. Audience members were treated to platters of food created by Mary Oleschenko and Food and Hospitality students. Congratulations to Ben Dening and the VET Music students, Michael Winter and the Year 10 Music students and Katrina Constantopoulos and the VET Dance students for the highly polished work and entertaining evening.

Participating in the cabaret performance at Blackwood High School was exciting and a worthwhile experience. It helped overcome my nerves of stage performing and I was able to receive positive feedback from the audience. I am quite confident in how well our performance turned out on the night, regardless of how nervous we were with our rehearsals. I liked that our performance was engaging with the audience. Zoe

Taking part in Blackwood High School’s Cabaret Night was a lot of fun. Prior to the show, I did a lot of running around, stage set up work, such as planning the lighting, and running sound checks. I enjoyed performing my three songs, with band members; Keyu Liu and Zoe Van Gangelen, as my stage presence and interactions to both the audience and band members engaged all involved and made my set feel interactive on both ends. Performing Arts Peace Rules Showcase PresentationBreaking SilenceOn Thursday 19 September, a group of 34 of our Dance and Drama students presented a film that they created and produced for the Peace Rules Performing Arts Award Showcase at Norwood Concert Hall. The competition was designed to give voice and shape to the question, “What can I do to contribute to peace through the arts?”

Ten secondary schools from across Adelaide competed in a total of 14 pieces, which included Dance, Drama, Music, Film and Multimedia performances. Overall, we placed second in the competition with our film Breaking Silence. Congratulations to our amazing Drama and Dance students.

Brigitte Esvelt, Drama teacher

Peace RulesAs Drama students, the first thing we are taught is that all stories must have a beginning, a middle and an end. A beginning that hooks, a nail biting conflict and an ending that leaves us wondering what the world truly is. It’s about learning and exploring truths. When given the topic ‘Peace’, some of us were slightly dismayed. What ‘drama’ can we make from peace? This topic, Peace, we thought, is entirely based on a resolution. Is peace the absence of conflict? This irony led to controversy over how to approach this theme.

Peace is something to fight for, so our inner conflicts only made it stronger. What peace means to an individual, can only be heard if we speak up and break our silence. Breaking peace to have peace. The truest form of theatre. Is discomfort more powerful than ignorance? Do we hide in the shadows of our cozy belief that believing in peace is enough? But is it enough? We are very proud of the way the students took up the challenge of making drama out of this initially challenging topic. Our students experimented with their own monologues, slam poetry, movement, dance, song, written and spoken word, expressing a range of points of view about what peace meant to them.

We were allowed 5 minutes for our final submission for the Peace Rules Showcase, so the arduous task of editing began. Students discovered the enormous difference between capturing ideas on film and presenting ideas in a live performance. With much preparation and using carefully selected material, we collaborated with Dance students to produce a film of exactly 5 minutes.

But what to do with all the work that was not used in the film? There were too many beautifully written individual works expressing personal stories to allow them to remain on the cutting room floor. For Wellbeing Week, the year 10 and 11 Drama students mounted a short 30 minute performance of our best slam poetry and performed our show Peace Rules to a packed house of appreciative students and again for parents/caregivers and friends in the evening. Congratulations to all students involved. Laura and Jevan, Year 10 Drama Students

Drama Excursions Term 3Students attended a number of shows at the Festival Centre last term. Review writing is an important part of our Arts curriculum. Students derive much knowledge and understanding about how to analyse and apply dramatic techniques and skills to their own work by attending live performances by professional practitioners in the field.

Jasper Jones State Theatre Company - 22 AugustI think that the play was brilliant. Every aspect of it, from the staging to the physical characterisation was amazing. I personally felt that I had gone through a rough growing-up journey myself and couldn’t help but shed a few tears. I think that the Director has achieved so much. She faced many issues that are challenging for a lot of people and dealt with them in an open way. She really brought the heart of this story to the stage and made it even better. I feel so lucky that I was even able to see it. When the play ended, the space was filled with so many appreciative cheers and clapping, along with many tears from the realness of the story. It was an amazing adaption from book to stage. Excerpt from a review by Amelia Penter, Year 9 Student

Girl Asleep State Theatre Company - 19 SeptemberGirl Asleep follows the story of fifteen-year-old Greta Driscoll. When her parents organise a party that she does not want, and invites the entire school, the entire world feels like it is going to fall apart. Exploring the themes of feminism, growing up and the transition between childhood and adolescence, Girl Asleep is a kooky and ludicrous tale that both teenaged and grown-up audiences alike can enjoy and appreciate. All the actors were incredibly convincing, and embodied their characters to an extremely high standard. Ellen Steele portrayed Greta Driscoll with a beautiful range of emotion, wonderfully showing an airy and much more passive innocence at the beginning, then beginning to slowly mature and grow emotionally as the events of the play unfolded. Steele’s dialogue and physicality throughout the show, demonstrating whatever tone or emotion required for a particular scene, really showed how versatile she is as a performer. Matthew Whittet’s Conrad served as delightful comic relief, but also having emotional depth as a character when being portrayed as the Goblin. A clear audience favourite was Antoine Jelk’s Elliott, whose bubbly and quirky personality immediately endeared him to everyone watching. He embodied the awkward, nerdy teenager excellently, making a wonderful companion to Steele’s Greta. His performance was incredibly endearing, executing the feeling of awkwardness and subtle sadness in particular scenes very well. These two actors as Greta and Elliott speak highly effectively to a teenage audience.Excerpt from a review by Emily Fischer, Year 11

I was inspired by the style of theatre that I experienced. I have not been to many live theatre productions before, but Girl Asleep ticked all the boxes of a sensational and inspiring production. The lighting and special effects were also great. There was a scene with an ugly Goblin-looking character, which I loved in the show. When he stomped around the stage, to a sloppy and wet sound effect, it genuinely kind of spat a whole lot of realism in my face. I was blown away by the style and unique potential of the use of sound effects in the theatre.Excerpt from a review by Sam Offler, Year 9
