ATTENTION ALL V6 (KV6) MG/ROVER/LANDROVER OWNERS The KV6 engine appears in many guises. The Rover 75 (both 2 & 2.5l engines) the MG ZR, ZS & ZT and the Landrover Freelander all use this engine. The engine uses many plastic components and if worked on by persons not experienced in dealing with this engine, many hundreds of pounds worth of damage can be caused. It is therefore important that any cambelt replacements are carried out by skilled operatives used to dealing with the KV6. This is the same for servicing as the three rear spark plugs are very difficult to get at and it is common at the time of service for you to be charged for 6 but getting only the front 3 changed. Water leaks – under the inlet manifolds lie 3 plastic components, each sealed by an o'ring. Eventually these components leak filling the space under the inlet manifolds with engine coolant (you may see it if you shine a torch at the back of the alternator). There is a drain hole in the engine block that exits at the water pump. An inexperienced mechanic will see the coolant at the water pump and tell you that the pump has failed necessitating replacement of the pump and of course the timing belts as they need to be removed to get at the pump. So it is common to be charged many hundreds of pounds for a job that you did not need! Martin specialises in this engine. A full cambelt kit, fitted including VAT is £650. If you only require the water leak to be fixed, this costs around £380 depending on how much is replaced. Beware – Any damage to the large plastic air box on top of the engine cannot be repaired and the part costs £680 plus VAT. Get the job done properly . Have it on DVD (free) so you can watch it later. The KV6 engine appears in many guises.
