Livestock Project Reminders

I know many of you have cattle, lamb and goat projects on feed. Keep in mind the following: Health - consider collecting stool samples on your pro-jects (especially lambs and goats) and work with your veterinarian on a preventative health program. Some of your projects may need a booster so find out what was administered and when. Be mindful of internal para-sites. Cattle should be wormed every 100 days, lambs and goats every 30 days. Feed - cattle should be eating around 2% of their body weight a day. Lambs and goats 2-3%. Be consistent with the amount you feed daily along with your feeding schedule.

Water - keep a constant supply of clean, fresh water available at all times. Facilities - make sure your pens are safe and keep them clean. Your projects need to have a cool comfort-able place to get out of the sun. Shade cloth and fans work well. Showmanship - while you have some time this sum-mer, PRACTICE with your projects. Tie, brush, handle, lead, brace, etc... Prospect shows are a good opportunity to practice as well so take advantage of them.

Project Support

I’m available to assist you with your livestock projects should you have questions or need help. I’d like to see your projects occasionally throughout the feeding period so feel free to call the Extension Office at 830-796-7755 to schedule a visit.

4-H’ers in Action - EVENTS

Tanner Gooding was fishing this past summer on the Medina River by the bridge headed to Hondo on 173. He caught this really cool fish called a Rio Grande (cichlid) Perch, which he was using the live green glow worms for bait. This cichlid is the only species native to NorthAmerica and related to tilapia. To learn more about this fish, http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/species/cichlid/

Thank you to Leslie Oakeson, Spor ishing project leader for sharing this picture and informa on.

Lending their hands to larger service 4-H County Council Members Colton Klinksiek and Rachel Barker volunteered to help spruce up our 4-H sign and give it a fresh coat of new paint. Be sure to take notice next time you visit our office or Mansfield Park!

During the invocation for a safe rodeo event and a moment of silence, this picture was taken by Julie Muetz, 4-H Horse Project Volunteer Leader at the Youth Rodeo held May 11th at Mansfield Park Rodeo Area. The Youth Rodeo Se-ries is sponsored by our 4-H Horse Project.

Hoping to win her case, future trial attorney and 4th grade 4-H member Kaila Morgan participated in her class’s tour of the Bandera County Courthouse.
