SCOPEBetweenFebruary26andMarch30,2016,AT&TandtheTylerClementiFoundationconductedonlinequantitativepollingamong1,000teensandparentsintheNewYorkCitymetropolitanarea,including500teensand500parents.Themarginoferroris+/-4.38peraudience,withhighermarginsoferrorforthesubgroups.


EXECUTIVESUMMARYAtitsbest,technologyconnectspeoplewithoneanotherandempowersindividualsintheirdailylives.Today,weliveinaworldwheretheInternet,coupledwithmobilebroadband,hastransformedsomanyaspectsofourlives–fromthewaywecommunicatewithoneanothertothewayweconsumeinformationanddata.Aswithallsocietaladvancements,unintendedandoftennegativeconsequencescannotbeavoided.OneofthoseconsequenceswhichhasparticularlyaffectedGenerationZ–thefirstgenerationoftruedigitalnatives–istheincreasinglyrampantcyberbullyingthatexistsonline.Thiseye-openingpoll,commissionedbyAT&TandtheTylerClementiFoundation,revealsthatcyberbullyingamongNewYorkCity-areateensisstunninglycommonplace.AccordingtothesurveyofBigAppleteens, nearlyhalfhaveexperiencedcyberbullyinginsomeformand8in10saytheyknowsomeonewhohasexperiencedcyberbullying.Despitethesealarmingstatistics,thesurveyalsorevealsthatwhileteensandparentsalikegrasptheseverityoftheproblem,they’renotcommunicatingwitheachotheraboutitaswellastheycould.Theymaybehavingatalk,butthey’renothavingTheTalk,andiftheyworkedtogether,theymightbetterbeabletoaddressandpreventthisdisturbingtrend.Morethananygroupofteensbefore,today’steensarelivingtheirlivesonline.And,astheyusesocialmediatomeetandminglewithfriendsandpeers,andevensocializewithteensthey’venevermetinperson,theyfindthemselvesnavigatingwhatcanbeahostilelandscape.Cyberbullyinghasbeendocumentedtoleadtodepressionandsubstanceabuse,sometimesforlife–andinsomecasesithasledtosuicide1.Assuch,thefindingsofthispollandthedatainthisreportindicateapublichealthissue,andshowswhycyberbullyingintheNewYorkareaisapervasiveproblemthatdemandsmoreeducationtohelpteensmakebetteronlinechoicesandreducetheriskstheyfaceonline. 1EspelageDL,HoltMK.Suicidalideationandschoolbullyingexperiencesaftercontrollingfordepressionanddelinquency.JournalofAdolescentHealth2013;53:S27-S31.
