ABOUTATSEANDNAEK

Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE)

ATSE advocates for a future in which technological sciences and engineering and innovation contribute significantly to Australia’s social, economic and environmental wellbeing. The Academy is empowered in its mission by some 800 Fellows drawn from industry, academia, research institutes and government, who represent the brightest and the best in technological sciences and engineering in Australia. Through engagement by our Fellows, the Academy provides robust, independent and trusted evidence-based advice on technological issues of national importance. We do this via activities including policy submissions, workshops, symposia, conferences parliamentary briefings, international exchanges and visits and the publication of scientific and technical reports. The Academy promotes science, and maths education via programs focussing on enquiry-based learning, teaching quality and career promotion. ATSE fosters national and international collaboration and encourages technology transfer for economic, social and environmental benefit.

Within this framework, and taking into account issues of national importance, the work of ATSE is given focus through a series of Topic Forums, Working Groups and Advisory Groups on Energy, Water, Education, Health Technologies, Built Environment, Innovation and Emerging Technologies. These foci inform the design and direction of the international program.

ATSE’s international program of missions, workshops and delegations, together with support from specific grants and schemes, is directed at strengthening Australia’s access to global science, engineering and technology and to maximising the benefits of Australia’s science base and its global linkages.

Strong relations have been established with sister academies, international scientific and research bodies, and Government ministries in partner countries, providing a structure for joint activities and exchange of information via: Joint workshops to exchange technical information and identification of collaborative

opportunities; Exchange visits, involving universities, research institutes and industry, sharing information and

establishing new relationships; Mid-career emerging researcher exchange programs; and Hosting and mounting missions of invited experts from industry, academia and government

agencies to develop new alliances. These relationships and activities ensure sustained strong global linkages, enhancing ATSE’s international networks.

National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK)

The National Academy of Engineering of Korea, NAEK is a non-profit and non-governmental organization of engineering professions inaugurated in October 1995.

NAEK members have been committed to improving national welfare by encouraging innovations and advancements in engineering.

In particular, the academy has promoted the value of engineering to general public, advised government on many technology-related issues of great national interest, provided academies with clear vision and direction for education and research innovation, and prompted the executives of major companies to upgrade their technologies to the international standard.

Currently there are 853 members, a half from academia and the rest from corporate. NAEK Membership is acquired through tiered examination in consideration of expertise or social contributions.
