with fast establishment and excellent DM growth, Trojan ryegrass has made a strong debut on the newly converted Mid Canterbury dairy unit managed by ATS shareholders Lyndon Grant and Lizzy pattullo.
The new ryegrass was sown in September 2011 after the farm owner, Ross Duncan saw how well it performed on his neighbouring arable farms, where it was being grown for seed production.
Between early December 2011 and mid August 2012, the 12.5 ha paddock was able to be grazed eight times, and grew an impressive amount of feed, Lyndon says.
The farm is sited at Seafield, and is owned by Ross and Sue Duncan. It totals 202 ha of Lismore stony silt loams, of which 195 ha are irrigated. with the help of two staff, Lyndon & Lizzy milk 730 cows through a 54 bale rotary.
Their total production for 2011/12 was 301,963 kg MS and they are budgeting on 330,000 kg MS for the current year.
Inputs for 2011/12 included 73 kg/ha nitrogen; 186 tonnes of grain; 12 ha of kale grown on farm to feed in calf heifers through winter, and four to six weeks winter grazing for mixed age cows.
Lyndon says while total grain inputs for 2012/13 are likely to reach approximately 350 t, along with 70 t maize silage, pasture is first and foremost their feed of choice.
At present they are sowing new grass ex winter feed crop; later, as the conversion matures, the aim is to renew 10% of their grazing area every year.
Trojan was sown with Alice white clover following kale last spring. The paddock was ploughed and cultivated to create a good seed bed, and the preparation also included 15 kg/ha suSCon Green for extended grass grub control plus 100 kg/ha DAp and 100 kg/ha urea.
Lyndon says the new grass was up and growing strongly by the end of September, and ready for its first grazing by 2 December. Growth through late autumn and winter 2012 was excellent, and it was looking very good in the lead up to spring.
About Trojan: Trojan is a late flowering diploid ryegrass directly descended from the very popular Tolosa. It has the best balance of DM yield, seasonal growth, persistence and feed quality of any Agriseeds diploid perennial ryegrass cultivar.
Trojan combines its late flowering date with excellent cool season growth. It is a leading variety for winter yield and has early spring growth equal to or better than the best early flowering varieties.
Its persistence is equally impressive, helped by relatively fine leaved densely tillered plants, which make it a robust, long-lasting pasture.
The novel endophyte NEA2, which is naturally occurring in Trojan, further enhances this natural hardiness, protecting it from a range of insect pests, including Argentine stem weevil.
