LETTER FROM OUR PARISH COORDINATOR

Dear friends, I love the readings for this second Sunday of Lent. They offer us so much hope! In the first reading, we hear the call of Abram, and how his decision to follow the Lord brought him so many blessings and greatness. Look at St. Paul in our second reading, who reminds us that Jesus “destroyed death, and brought life and immortality to light.” It’s as if both readings are challenging us to stop and listen. To be mindful that the same divine promise will transform us in beau ful and mysterious ways as well, that our sacrifice of Lent will grant us a peace greater than we could ever imagine. Now, we know that our Church offers us many ways this Lenten season to do just that. In growing in our rela onship to Christ, we, too, can see the ‘light’ of hope in these cold and dark days. One way is to recognize once again that Lent is dynamic, changing as we grow and mature as adult Catholic Chris ans. There’s a good chance many of us s ll observe Lent as we did when we were children, especially in giving up something like candy or curse words. And for some, that is enough. But if you think about it, shouldn’t our faith grow and mature just as we have with other areas of our lives? A er all, we don’t talk to our two-year old the same way we would talk to our teenager, or the same way we might talk to our adult children. So, why not the same with God? And maybe more importantly, how do we feel God is talking to us? Second, during Lent we not only accompany those in the RCIA program in spirit, but in all our spiritual programs offered in the bulle n. One way to remain hopeful is to con nue to pray for those who will be formally welcomed into our faith community at the Easter Vigil, as well as pray for those who have commi ed their me in all our ministries to evangelize and teach what we believe. May these efforts con nue to be a reminder that RCIA is not only for those wishing to become Catholic; it is an excellent way to re-examine and recommit to our own faith. Are you ready to take the next step in your faith jour-ney? Are you willing to a end one of our evening programs, or reach out to Tina in support of our RCIA program? The same with our many parish prayer offerings as well. We are all in this together! Finally, the transfigura on of Jesus marked an important moment in the lives of Peter, James, and John, a confirma on of what they believed. They were overwhelmed by the experience and needed me to process. But at the simple touch of Jesus a er His resurrec on, their fears and misunderstandings were transformed into great love and commitment. If you think about it, when we were young, we o en did not get the message as well. But as we grow older and wiser, just as Jesus’ disciples did, the message finally hits home. May we give thanks for that today. And even though the Church’s liturgical calendar is full of special seasons -- holy days, memorials, and feasts – may we be reminder that every season – every holy day – is intended to provide us with a transfigura on, a way to witness the amazing prayers and deeds of our rich Catholic tradi on. A chance to focus once again on the Real Presence of Jesus in the sacraments as well as our daily lives. So today, when we receive Communion, remember that we can be touched by the Real Presence of Jesus just as powerfully as the three disciples were on that mountaintop. And, as Lent con nues, we are called not to “give up” but instead “give in” to the Holy Spirit, knowing the promise of light and immortality with Christ awaits. With deep gra tude for all you do for St. Mary of the Woods, Deacon Chuck

THE SPIRITUAL EXERCISES OF ST. IGNATIUS … A LENTEN RETREAT IN DAILY LIFE

"Jesus is passing by," they told the blind beggar sitting by the roadside. And we know that he cried out, met the Lord, and was healed.

Jesus is still passing by. Every day he passes by. Let us encounter Jesus this Lent.

Join us in praying the mysteries of Christ's life and mission. Meet Him personally through the Scriptures and in your daily life, using the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises. Written by St. Ignatius of Loyola while still a layperson, these "spiritual exercises" are an authentic and powerful lay spirituality. Originally given over 30 days in silence, our adaptation allows a person to integrate the fruits of one's daily prayer into the ongoing flow of one's day to day experiences.

Retreat Activities:

• Weekly sharing and support sessions • Daily individual prayer periods • Brief presentation on Spiritual Exercises at each session • Different methods of prayer are explained • Scripture passages for daily reflection are provided • Prayer journaling explained

RAPHAEL, “TRANSFIGURATION” 1518 - 1520

Lent Week 2 – March 8 Raphael, “Transfiguration,” 1518–1520

In the Transfiguration, Raphael tells a story of revelation, faith, and healing. He shows how the moment of Revelation on Mount Tabor sheds light on the scene below, the healing of a boy with a demon. It’s the story in the Gospel immediately following the Transfiguration of Jesus. Heaven sheds its light below as Christ, embraced by the bright cloud and flanked by Moses and Elijah, is the apex of the scene. Below we see the apostles and even further down we see others gathered to view a possessed boy and his family. From top to bottom, the colors shift from a cool, heavenly glow to warmer, earthly tones. Raphael shows us the disciples as they meet the desperate family. The boy’s face contorts with suffering. His body is torn, one arm up and one arm down, as if he’s being pulled towards both Heaven and Hell. Raphael depicts the family as a focused unit. Their intensity and upward hands signal their united act of faith. Opposite them, the disciples are over-whelmed by the challenge—their faces and bodies pointing every which way, showing their disarray. Between the disciples and the family, Raphael places a unique female figure. Christ dominates the painting, yes, but this woman is second in visual importance. She is central to the boy’s narrative - she

is part of the scene but she is not a character in it. Her cool and bright coloring, more like the divine action above, sets her apart. She is a symbol that invites us into deeper meaning. In Raphael’s work, the bodies profoundly speak to us. This woman’s body is turned, twisted in a serpentine form that simultaneously engages the disciples, the family, and us, the audience. In her twist is the juxtaposi-tion of one direction meeting another; in her turn is a change of direction, a new path. She is faith, responding to the revelation of God above. She brings to the disciples the key ingredient missing from their work. She bridges the two stories. Her turned and twisted body also brings to mind conversion, the turning of mind and heart. She echoes the divine words from above: “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” With faith and grace, our hearts may turn as well.
