Course Times: The Student Course starts promptly at 1300 hours on Thursday, April 10,2008. The course will start in the Al Badri Auditorium located in Fujairah Hospital. Lookfor the "ATLS"directional signs. Time has been incorporated into the course schedule forprayers on Friday, April 11, 2008. The course ends by 1530 Hrs on April 12, 2008.

It has been our experience with courses of this type that the time scheduled for differentcourse events often exceeds those listed. We recognize this as a normal occurrenceresulting from questions, impromptu discussions, and the high level of enthusiasm for thecourse from the participants and faculty. Therefore, your questions and comments arewelcomed and encouraged.

Surgical Skills lab: The surgical skills stations are scheduled for the Morning of April 11 ,2008. The surgical skills procedures in the course will be conducted on live, anesthetizedgoat models. If you have any concerns about performing the surgical procedures on thistype of model, please contact Dr. Gautam as soon as possible. Protective clothing will beprovided during this session.

Meals: Breaks and lunches are provided during the course.

lodging: Participants are responsible for their own boarding 8: lodging. We do howevernegotiate special rates with the local hotels. Details will be available later on.

Attire/Dress: Please dress informally/casually and comfortably for the course. Covergownsor scrub suits will be available for you to wear during the surgical skills practicumand initial assessment skillsstations.

ATLS@STUDENT COURSE INFORMATION

During the Student Course, the core medical content and related skills sessions are taught.Please study all material in the ATLS@Student Manual, including the appendices. Basedon our experience and to successfully complete the course, it is VERY IMPORTANT thatyou study the materials BEFORE the course begins. Adequate time will be available forquestions and answers during the course. As you read the materials, you will note theprogram's unique educational design and its inherent philosophies. The concept of theprogram is simple yet profound. We recognize that some clinical procedures performed inyour country may vary from those outlined in the manual. We also recognize that there areother acceptable approaches to the care of the trauma patient. However, for the purposesof this course, your successful completion of the course, and to promote a method ofstandardized care for the trauma patient, the ATLS@core content and related materialpresents one. safe approach to assess;n~ and man~;~ the multiplv ;niured patient. This;s known as the "ATLS@Wav." Discussions during the course and your responses duringpractice and testing sessions should focus on the "ATLS@Way."

The course focuses on the "first hour" of trauma management, starting at the point intime of injury and continuing through initial assessment, life-saving interventidn,reevaluation, stabilization ana when needed, transfer to a ~ospital that has the resourcesand capabilities to manage the patient. The course consists of written pre- and postcoursetests, core content lectures, case presentations, discussions, development of life-savingmanipulative skills, practical laboratory experiences, interactive skills sessions, and a finalperformance proficiency evaluation. Based on well-established principles and objectives oftrauma management, the course provides doctors with one acceptable method for safe,immediate management, and the basic knowledge to assess and manage the traumapatient to ensure the best possible outcome.

Written Tests: Pretest #1 and a response sheet are enclosed with this letter. Pleasecomplete the test BEFOREcoming to the course. Your test answer sheet MUSTbe handedin when you arrive for the first day of the course on April 10, 2008. It will be correctedand returned to you for review during the Group Discussion of Pretest et al in the Eveningof April 10, 2008.The test booklet and answer sheet MUST be returned to the individual proctoring thewritten posttest AFTER you finish the posttest. AUwritten test materials remain with theCourse Director and Coordinator after the course, thereby retaining as much validity of thetest questions as possible. Your cooperation in this regard is appreciated.

A Triage Scenario Booklet is incorporated in your manual book. A response sheet isincluded for each scenario. Please respond to the questions for each scenario BEFOREthecourse. An answer key will be given to you after the group discussion of these scenarios.You may retain both booklets for future reference.

A Course Schedule will be given to you at the registration desk. It is detailed and color-coded for your ease in identifying the schedule for each day. The schedule may change(faculty and/or students) by the time the course is conducted. However, the lecture andskills stations' sequences and your assignments will not change.

The faculty members for this course have been selected for their expertise in the care ofthe trauma patient, and their experience with and enthusiasm and commitment to theATLS@'Program.

Successful Course Completion: Your successful completion of the Student Course is basedon your attendance at the entire course, adherence to the course content, demonstrationof the practical skills as outlined in the manual, and demonstration of knowledge andproficiency in accordance with the course requirements as outlined herein:

1. Your performance at each of the skills stations will be evaluated by faculty inaccordance with the essential requirements and objectives established forsuccessfully completing each of the skills. The skills stations are provided in yourmanual and are coordinated with the appropriate chapter in the manual.

2. Successful completion of the written posttest with a score of at least 80%

3. Your performance at the Initial Assessment Testing Station will be evaluated byfaculty in accordance with the essential requirements and objectives establishedfor successful completion of this station. This station serves as a final practicaltesting station for the course, and is a culmination of all the knowledge and skillstaught during the course.
