“SCOOP” 14 December 2012

WHAT’S ON AT BTS Mondays – (every week) School Banking Learn-to-swim program (continues until 14/12/12 Friday 14/12/12 Sleep-over for “A Christmas Carol” performers in hall Saturday 15/12/12 “A Christmas Carol” Tuesday 18/12/12 Presentation Night 6.00 pm Wednesday 19/12/12 Last Day of Term

The capacity to learn is a gift; The ability to learn is a skill;

The willingness to learn is a choice.

Four days to go in the school year and don’t we all just know it, lots of running around to ensure that all that has to be done before the summer vacation commences, is done. We expect to put out an abbreviated version of “SCOOP” next Wednesday so I will use that edition to say whatever remains to be said about 2012. A reminder about the student production ‘A Christmas Carol’ on Saturday, I hope that as many people can be there as both the students and teachers involved have put in enormous effort. I thank Miss O’Loughlan, Mr Ellicott and Mr Black in particular for their efforts but as always the vast army of staff and students behind the scenes to help to ensure such events get off the ground. Unfortunately, I will have to make do with the rehearsing I have witnessed from the very early days in winter in the MPC to the after school activity most recently as I have a meeting over the weekend in Sydney. Nonetheless, I wish all of the cast and crew a great day and hope that everyone enjoys the skills and talents of our students. I will be especially keen to hear how our new lapel microphones work. I have in the recent past noticed a number of students in the secondary school in particular but also in general terms feeding up on lollies and energy drinks such as ‘Mother’ before the start of the school day. Such intense loads of sugar and caffeine are not healthy or nutritious for young people and worse can lead to students displaying really aberrant and unruly behaviour. Could I urge you to encourage your children not to partake of these products prior to school starting and also to understand that the possession or consumption of energy drinks in particular is banned on school grounds. In the lead up to the vacation I will also reinforce the fact as part of the Inclosed Lands Act, that outside school hours it is illegal to be on school grounds. Hope you all enjoy the weekend. JAPANESE CLUB EXCURSION On 5 December 2013 we travelled to Canberra for an overnight excursion to learn more about Japanese language and culture. We travelled to Canberra to participate in the Engage Asia Workshop – ANU. We were involved in many activities such as the “war games”, language challenges and a few cultural activities relating to Japan, as well as lectures on advertising and the history of Japan. In the morning we participated in an exercise called, ‘Rajio Taiso’ as well as a bowing lesson and a sushi eating lesson relating to the customs of Japan. For lunch and dinner we encountered a few new tastes of Japan (Tofu, Koroke, Okonomiyaki). On Wednesday night we watched a Japanese Anime film titled, “From up on Poppy Hill”. The Japanese Club enjoyed the Japanese Anime Film and also liked the stay on the ANU campus. The students would like to thank Mr Ellicott and Miss O’Loughlan for taking us on this excursion. Also we thought that ANU did a great job organising this event and we hope to return soon. The Japanese Club.
