Computerized core drillingComputer control of core drill rigs is not new. We introducedAutomatic Performance Control to the DIAMEC series someyears ago. And the benefits are well-understood – dramaticimprovements in drilling economy and production through:

Atlas Copco’s new DIAMECU6 core drill is a modern,highly productive machinethat has evolved from thecombined know-how oftwo leading organizationsin the core drilling busi-ness. A powerful and reli-able drill rig that is basedon our experience of build-ing and servicing morethan 3500 core drills.

The DIAMEC U6 is the first of a new generationof DIAMEC core drills. It incorporates the latesthydraulic and electronic technology into a mod-ern compact design and includes many optionsthat give you real flexibility. We pride ourselves inbringing you a machine that has everything youwant.

Operating the new DIAMEC U6 couldn’t beeasier. It is optionally available as a manually op-erated rig, but comes with a new third generationAutomatic Performance Control as standard.

Our design points for

the DIAMEC U6 were:

• Improved reliability. The rig is more robustoverall, but we’ve paid particular attention to therotation unit and feedframe. The result is lessmaintenance and better availability.

• More power. We’ve greatly increased the ca-pacity of the drill rig, which gives much moreefficient drilling down to the bottom of the hole.

• True one-man operation. The new improvedAPC enables full automatic control over drilling.It gives the driller more time for emptying the corebarrels, preparing bits, etc., and means that hedoes not need a helper.

• Flexibility of use. The DIAMEC U6 can be usedfor conventional and wireline drilling for holes upto size H. There is a new easy-to-use positionerthat enables you to set the feedframe single-handed. These features, together with the com-pact design of the rig, open up a wider range ofapplications and give better utilization.

• Safety and ergonomics. Safety and ease of useare always high on the agenda at Atlas Copco.Thus, the DIAMEC U6 contains improved safetyfeatures and we have put much time and effortinto ensuring that the design of the control panelis ergonomically sound.

DIAMEC U6The DIAMEC U6 is the result of combining the skills and

experience of the Atlas Copco Craelius and JKS Boyles

organizations. It represents the best of both worlds. A

synthesis of the finest features of the DIAMEC and JKS

Boyles product ranges that satisfies the requirements of

both customer sets – with enough new technology to

make it probably the most robust, reliable and flexible

drill rig on the market.

The DIAMEC U6 is optimised for our latest diamond

bit and core barrel technologies. It can be delivered skid

or crawler mounted with an electric or diesel power unit.

1. Flexible, easy-to-use positioner

The DIAMEC U6 has the most convenient, easy-to-usepositioner system available on any diamond drill rigtoday. This flexible system enables a single operator,working alone, to set the feedframe in any positionfrom +90 to –90 degrees without moving the wirelinehoist. There is also a turntable option that enables thedrill to be quickly positioned horizontally. Using thesefeatures, you can set the rig to drill a hole at a specificposition or line it up on an existing drill hole muchmore easily. You can also set it up to drill its ownfeedframe anchor holes in the rock face.

2. Robust feedframe

The push-equals-pull design of the feed cylinder givesmaximum capacity for both uphole and downhole drill-ing. This, together with the rigid frame constructionand a longer cradle, gives steady and secure drillingresulting in a straighter hole.

Reliability of the feedframe is improved as a resultof the direct feed cylinder and 50% fewer parts. Therobust new design results in less wear, whichmeans that fewer adjustments are needed andthey are easier to perform. There are also con-venient telescopic adjustments for the anchorchannel and mast extension.

3. New rotation units

There are two new rotation units – one standard, theother optional. The standard version is an N size, 1800rpm unit, the optional version an H size, 1400 rpm unit.For optimum performance, you can choose betweentwo rotation motors on the standard unit – one for drill-ing holes of size A–B, and one for holes of size B–N.Rpm can be set and adjusted by the operator from thecontrol panel.

The Atlas Copco patented hydraulic chuck hasquick-change jaws. Oversize bearings and a new typeof distributor seal give extra long life. And a sealedgearbox reduces maintenance and enables drilling inany position.

4. New rod holder with latest technology

The new rod holder has a higher holding capacity andcan handle A- to H-size rods. You can adjust the clamp-ing force to suit different types of drill rod.

The rod holder features the latest gas spring tech-nology, which results in longer service life. The gasspring is in the form of a cartridge, which simplifiesservicing because it is light and easily replaced. Andthe gas pressure can be monitored for absolute safety.

5. Modern hydraulic system

Environmentally friendly hydraulic connections haveO-ring face seals that give zero leakage. Pressure fil-ters are fitted between hose separation points andvalves on both APC and manual control versions ofthe rig. These prevent dirt from entering the valvesafter opening the hydraulic lines to move the drill mod-ules, thus improving reliability. The valves are locatedon the drill modules, which means that the pressurefilters are always protecting them from dirt and thereare fewer hoses on the floor.

6. New wireline winch

The new heavy-duty 1000-meter wireline hoist andlevelwind assembly is fast and compact. It stays inposition for all drilling angles from –90 to +90 de-grees. Only the orientation of the levelwind assem-bly needs to be adjusted to suit the drilling angle,and this can be done quickly and easily without any

tools. There is just one greasing point, which meanslow maintenance.

The Automatic Performance Control of theDIAMEC U6 marks the achievement of true one-man operation. Why? Because it is an ergonomiccontrol system that meets the needs of the user.We visited customer sites and watched drillersusing the earlier DIAMEC models, listened to theirproblems, incorporated their requirements into thenew rig, and field-tested the results. The end prod-uct is a system that makes it much easier for thedriller to enter all necessary drilling parametersand to monitor the drilling operation from a dis-tance.

Features that reflect user needsThe DIAMEC U6 APC operates in a Microsoft Win-dows® environment and has a new interface thatis easier to learn and use. Other advances overthe earlier APC models include:

• Screen-based control panel. A touch screen anda single control knob are provided for easy inputand adjustment of control parameters. Drilling in-formation is presented on the screen. Symbols areused instead of words. Numbers are displayedlarge enough to be read easily from a distance.

Automatic Performance Control

With Automatic Performance Control, the drilling operation is supervised by a com-puter – giving the driller time for emptying core barrels, preparing bits, etc. Once the drillerhas entered all necessary drilling parameters, the APC computer takes over control and main-tains the penetration rate. The APC acts instantly on any change in rock formation that callsfor adjustment in feed force, rotation speed or torque, or even a complete shutdown.

And a joystick is provided for manual control ofwireline, fast travel, and rotation.

• New functions. These include automatic wire-line, powerful self-diagnostics, screen display ofmanuals and parts lists, and remote trouble shoot-ing.

• State-of-the-art hardware and software. TheAPC features the latest generation Can bus con-trol, which minimises the hydraulic plumbing andelectrical wiring. The electronics are very ruggedand cope extremely well with harsh environmen-tal conditions.

Manual controlAlthough the APC comes as standard, you may ifyou wish order a rig with an optional manual con-trol system. This control panel is similar to the APCpanel but there is of course no computer – i.e. thedriller must supervise the drilling operation. Themanual control panel is lighter, has an ergonomicdesign and is therefore more user friendly. Thepilot-type hydraulic system has additional features,such as improved hold-back, make-up torque andintegrated flush water control.
