THE SPHINX

Lion or Jackal?

By Joseph R. Jochmans, Lit.D.

Author/Researcher Robert Temple recently published The Sphinx Mystery (Inner Tradit ions, 2009). A virtual gold

mine of information, the f ive-hundred-page-plus book is augmented by rare photographs and illustrations. Highly

recommended for anyone even slightly curious over the greates t of all Egyptian mysteries, the book will prove an im-

portant refe rence for years to come. Temple, however, draws a number of conclusions that need closer examination.

One of t he mos t controversial is that the Sphinx was never a recumbent lion but, instead, a guardian jackal or dog,

called Anubis. (In A.R. #78 , geologist Dr. Robert Schoch res ponded to several crit icisms made of himself by Temple

and he also commented on Temple’s jackal theory—ED.)

Today, it is obvious that the monument’s pres ent head is too small for the body. Several contemporary Egyptologists

believe that at some point in the distant past the human face of a Dynastic Pharaoh was added to the Sphinx. In-

deed, the entire head has been re-carved and downsized, poss ibly from that of an older animal image, matching theres t of t he body. But was it a lion or a jackal?

The primary evidence for the Sphinx being leonine comes from t he overwhelming testimony of Egyptian, Pt olemaic,

Greek, Roman, early Christian, and medieval Arabic records, as well as the eyewitness accounts of numerous

European travelers and scholars. At one point Temple expresses amazement at how old stories and legends

passed down through many generations still manage to preserve their kernels of historical facts. He gives several

examples. And yet, a few chapters away, when confronted by the vast agreement among these very sources

concerning the Sphinx as lion, he dismiss es such testimony as age-old misconception perpetuated over millennia. If

the information instilled in one set of stories can be accepted as truthful, then why cannot the near consensus

observations made throughout t ime regarding the Sphinx likewise be t rustworthy?

Temple further states his belief that t he body of the Sphinx could not have been a feline because it is generally too

narrow in shape—its stony back too horizontally st raight—to have been anything but the s leek form of a jackal. But

the real answer to the problem had to be the artist ic limitat ions faced by the original sculptors.

Very likely the Sphinx was shaped out of a gebel, a knobby rock protrusion found in many places in the Sahara-Libyan

wind-blown sands. Doubtless this is how the Sphinx began, before being sculpted into a definite animal form.

We do not know, however, what the ancient gebel’s original contours were. I t may have been t hat fashioning the

arched back of a lion figure was not possible, because the top surface was already f lat. What we do know is t hat in

the middle of t he Sphinx’s pres ent back is a vertical tomb shaft , and at least one of the early European explorers of

the Sphinx was of t he opinion that t his tomb may have been very old, even predynastic. In other words, it was already

present when the monument was first carved, and the tomb had been excavated when the gebel was still intact.

This would indicate that to be accessible, the tomb had been made in an already exist ing flat-s urfaced environment.

The dimens ions of t he original gebel outcropping probably det ermined how the Sphinx’s upper layers were s haped. As

the sculptors then cut down and removed the rock around the s ides of the beast t o its base, its fashioning would st ill

have been limited by the size and shape of the gebel. The intended image remained that of a lion, only a slender-

looking one.

Perhaps the greatest objection to Temple’s idea of the Sphinx as Anubis is the fact that the existing geology of the

monument would have prevented it. The reason the original, stony Sphinx body has a def inite layered look with slightly

diffe rent colorations is that the limes tone, out of which the monument was originally carved, does not have a

consist ent s tratification. The base is composed of a soft stone class ified as t ype Member I, and the reclining body

is made up of an equally soft type Member I I . Such limestone is porous, lightweight, flakable, and very susceptible to

weathering. It is for this reason that, over the ages , the ongoing deterioration of t he Sphinx body caused a series of

succeeding Dynastic, Ptolemaic, Roman and modern-day res torers t o continually add brickwork to the original base in

an attempt to preserve it from further erosion.

In contrast, the head is of a much harder, more compact and heavier form of limes tone with a noticeably darkerappearance, designated as type Member III . The advantage of s uch a st one is t hat, when carved, it bet te r ret ains

its shape and for a much longer t ime—which is why t he ancient sculptors chose it. But the major disadvantage is that

such a layer, from which the ent ire head was fashioned, is very heavy. Even the pres ent, great ly downsized, head is

s lowly crushing the softer limestone of its neck and ches t. Modern Egyptian res toration experts fear that t he unbal-

anced weight of the head could ultimate ly cause the supporting limes tone to crumble and dislodge the heavier s tone

cranium. For this reason several excavators in the past two centuries have added cement collars around the neck.

As ugly as they are, they have, nevertheless, kept t he beast from “nodding off ” and losing its perpet ual sunrise

gaze. Likewise, when it was recently suggested that the Sphinx’s beard—pieces of which were unearthed at the

base and are kept in the Cairo and British Museums—be re-att ached, the Egyptian Department of Ant iquit ies

refused because the beard would have pulled the head too far forward, and the result ing imbalance might have broken

off the head.

Temple’s reconstruction of the Sphinx with the proposed head and countenance of Anubis would have been an im-

poss ible configuration—even s elf-destructive. Because of its strata, the much larger jackal head would have beenmost ly composed of t ype Member II I limestone which would have crushed the body’s soft er rock. Moreover, an at-

tempt to reproduce the most distinctive f eature of Anubis’ face—his long protruding snout—could only have resulted

in pulling the entire weight of t he head far forward, causing it to immediately break and separate.

If, on the ot her hand, the original Sphinx had been a f ull-bodied lion with a f eline head, a larger cranium would have been

far more poss ible. A s eries of s mall ivory carvings from the earlies t Dynasties depict the t raditional imagery of a lion

having a large head protruding from much lower on the f ront of t he body just above it s paws. Translating this onto the

Sphinx monument, the lion’s head would have been positioned f orward of where t he chest now is, and composed of

less weighty type Member I I rock, as would the t hicker upper front legs that would have served as s tructural s ide

supports for the head. The heavier type M ember I I I s tone in such a leonine configuration would have been part of the

lion’s mane, f ar bet te r attached t o the underlying strata over a wider area, and its weight more evenly distributed

across the t op.

When the Sphinx was re-carved, the lion head was removed and the rock surface s culpted back to its pres ent

ches t, the upper f ront legs likewise greatly reduced, while the newer human head emerged more on top of t he body,

out of the Member II I s tratum. Because t here probably was not much of this s tratum to begin with, the artist s had

to make t he s evere compromise of creating the new head proport ionally smaller. Unfortunately, this refashioning

began the unbalanced s tate of af fairs f or the Sphinx’s human st one cranium which has been a problem ever since.

Very signif icantly, we also find among the Pharaonic remains from t he F irst through the Third Dynast ies royal tablet s

which show very prominently the repeated figure of a lion’s head with mane and just its f ront paws, sugges ting the

rest of t he leonine form was either unfinished or half-buried in sand. What is more, t he face of the lion is blank with no

eyes or mouth shown, as if its countenance had been worn away by a long period of wind erosion. If this was the

actual image of the original Sphinx at G iza at a t ime when Egypt was just beginning, the s igns of it already being

well-weathered would indicate that the monument itse lf is really much older, poss ibly dating back far into the

Predynast ic era.

Doubtles s the early Dynast ic Egyptian art isans would not have lef t such an important statue in such a deteriorated

state and would, it s eems, have attempted to repair it, giving it new features . At A bu Roash, within sight of Giza tothe north, a small sphinx was found that some believe dates to the Fourth Dynasty. It has the body of a lion, but its

feline face was replaced with that of a woman. The head and mane are proport ional to the body, but it has very human

feminine facial features. I f this reflect s a parallel transf ormation the Sphinx its elf may have undergone, it fulf ills many

legends and stories that at one t ime the reclining lion at G iza was also half woman. We recall the ancient Greek tale

of Oedipus encountering the f emale s phinx creature in the des ert and solving its deadly riddle.

While Temple’s ass ertion does not work for the Sphinx having once been an image of Anubis, he nevertheless of-

fers intriguing evidence that somewhere on the Giza plateau, there was indeed a cult shrine dedicated to the jackal

god capped with a large s tatue which at one t ime may have matched the s ize of the Sphinx. He notes, for example,

that several of the more prominent royal mast abas or burial sites from the Fourth and Fifth Dynasties , which look out

toward the southern port ion of the Giza plateau, have tomb artwork portraying an oversized Anubis reclining on top of a

sanctuary. The author mistakingly assumes this statue and sanctuary was the Sphinx and accompanying Sphinx

Temple. But in actuality t he Sphinx is situated more t oward the east ern end of the plateau, much lower down and in

its own valley, which could not have been eas ily seen from the mast abas in ques tion. The actual statue f igure of

Anubis more t han likely was located higher up on the plateau, closer to due south and wes t of t he mastabas, where

its view would have been more predominant and unobstructed.

Temple quotes quite ext ens ively f rom the Pyramid Text s, the Coff in Text s, and other ancient f unerary inscriptions

regarding what was described as t he mythical Land of Res tau of t he Necropolis, which many interprete rs f eel was

very real and was once located long ago in the Giza area. Several of the sacred Utt erance texts ref er to Res tau

having a sanctuary of Anubis t hat was situated near a “causeway” and was s urrounded by a small body of water

called “J ackal Lake.” Temple, in his excellent, ext ens ive, firsthand observations of the immediate Sphinx

environment, demonst rates that in olden times when the Nile river annually overf lowed its banks, t he f lood plain

reached t o the very f ront of the Sphinx precincts , and that a s t ill-exist ing narrow channel once equipped with s luice

gates allowed these waters to surround the Sphinx itself in a small moat that was used for ritualis tic purposes .

However, Temple, in his claim that the Sphinx was once Anubis, mist akenly ident ifies the “ causeway” ref erred to in

the ancient texts as the Chephren Pyramid causeway that straddles the southern side of the Sphinx and the

Sphinx moat as having been “ Jackal Lake.” What he ignores are those U tt erance text s which speak of

“ causeways ” and “ lakes ” in the plural, so t here was more than one location being des cribed. Looking at all the

relevant funerary text s, we f ind there we re, in fact, several major cult centers f lourishing at Giza from a very early

period of t ime, the now-lost Anubis s hrine being only one of them.

Temple makes the major erroneous assumption that all these cult centers were somehow coalesced together into

one, and that one single place was around the Sphinx. This direct ly contradicts the various f unerary text s which give

very distinctive, even unique, des criptions for each cente r. By the very nature of what was being portrayed, these

centers could never have been combined all together by any s tret ch of t he imagination.

The Anubis shrine t hat Temple is looking for was, more t han likely, ass ociated with the causeway of t he M ycerinusor Third Pyramid of Giza. The author notes that the only sculpture of Anubis f ound throughout the plateau was a small

green diorite s tatue of t he god unearthed among the ruins of the Mycerinus f unerary sanctuary just to the eas t of

the Third Pyramid. In his book, Temple reproduces a NASA photo of t he ent ire G iza plateau which shows at its

southern ext remity, very near the Mycerinus causeway, the telltale s igns of numerous buried walls and other struc-

tures not yet excavated.

During those ancient t imes when the Nile s easonally overf lowed, the f lood plain once reached all the way around the

southern end of t he plateau to the very edge of the Mycerinus complex. Is this where “ Jackal Lake” could have

been s ituated? The funerary writ ings also des cribed Anubis as the god “ at t he top of his hill”—and if a large s tatue of

the jackal god had indeed been placed there, then it could have been s een across the ent ire plateau to the north and

for a far distance by water approach during the Nile f lood season from the south.

Most likely, the now miss ing Anubis s anctuary and statue, instead of having been carved out of a gebel like the

Sphinx, was const ructed from local stonework that was later dismantled or buried in the s urrounding sands when Giza

was heavily damaged during the chaos that ended the Old Kingdom.

Zep-Tepi had been sacred to new αώ cycle and was t he proof about the beginning of the new αώ epoch.

We have a greatest epoch of the prohibited History. Lots of artifacts of the pre-flood history are forbidden by

false “ fathers” of the mainst reams. 30,000 Atlantian or Olmecian artifacts found by Scott ish Mineralogist and

Archeologist William Niven are hidden in the museums of N ew York and Mexico. Lots of s o called “researches ”

are written for the money, not for the Truth. They could rise lots of money f or the f als ification of the our real

history. “Fathers” of t he fals ifications led by Dr. Zahi Hawass and Dr . Mark Lehner have the ost rich position

against the modern discoveries made by many investigators. These video clips in the link are taken from the

interesting investigations and closely connected to the much more sensational discovery that the Atlantis City.

If you know Geology can understand eve rything!http://www.cosmogeology.ge/chapter-25.htm

The Giza complex is sacred to the global geo-catastrophe that started on 21 October 12,475 (10,465 B.C.)

years ago. Sphinx indicates epoch of the event, i.e. Leo’s epoch. Three stars of the Orion’s belt indicate the

three Giza pyramids at the event boundary and causeway f rom t he middle pyramid to the s phinx indicates

sunrise, i.e. 21-22, 23 October during the event. Of 21 October to 23 October continued EB geo-t ransf er and

terrible earthquakes that formed last global deluge all over the Earth. Under the crust s ituates huge M agma

Ocean. Approximately deepnes s of the fiery Magma Ocean is measured ~400km. Mantle plumes discovered

by many geologists are the proofs about powerful liquid waves within the Magma Ocean. The waves are f ormed

by penetration or rapid movement of t he f iery liquid mass es from the outer nucleus into t he M agma Ocean

(Asthenosphere). Reversal and recovery of t he global Magnet ic field, powerful wave deformation of t he crust ,

runaway subductions and kilometers high tsunamis and partially or global ext inctions are the s ide ef fects only.

The Giza project began by survived Atlantians aft er 10,465 B.C. and finished approximately in 10,400 B.C. Of

course t he project had been sacred to last global deluge. Thus minimal age of t he Sphinx and three pyramids is

that – 10.400+2010=12.410 years. It has no alternative. Whole Elite of the modern Geology want to say to

egyptologist that the Sphinx has the much older age but the egyptologists have the ostrich position ??????

htt p://www.cosmogeology.ge/chapter-(31).pdf

htt p://www.cosmogeology.ge/chapter-(32).pdf

htt p://www.cosmogeology.ge/chapter-(33).pdf

Thus t he megalithic complex of the Giza sacred to last global deluge in 10,465B.C. To explain each periodical

global deluge we have the addit ional proofs as we ll. There are discovered shift and reversal of the magnetic

poles by many scientists. Scientific falsifications are interrelated to the wrong authorities and they have the

ostrich position against my discoveries but the reversal events have been discovered by best scientists, best

inte llect uals of the world. Each reversal event has an interesting and only explanation. These events are t he

proofs about powerful liquid waves within outer nucleus. Only one force of t he universe can do it . This is an

amazing geological force EB geo-transfer. It causes penetration or rapid movement the outer nucleus masses

under the crust and mantle plumes , powerful liquid waves within Magma Ocean, def ormation all over the crust ,

kilometers high tsunamis and shift ing all lithosphere platforms over the 1000-1500km. Shift of the geographical

poles are discovered by many scientists as we ll. shift of all lithosphere platf orms over the 1000-1500km means

drifting of the continents for few days over the 1000-1500km. Only one force of the universe can do something

like t his – powerful liquid waves under the crust , within Magma Ocean.

Thus f uture of t he modern geology is that Gradualism + catas trophic plate tectonics [periodical global deluges all

over the earth]. I t means that every 7,000-13,000 years runaway subduction and drift ing of the continents for

few days over the 1000-1500km.

All well-known pyramids of Egypt: “ Khufu’s ”, “ Khafre’s ”, “ Menkaure’s ”, Djoser’s, Meidum, bent and red

pyramids are sacred to At lantis people, to revere souls of the At lantis people. Additionally the G iza complex

exactly indicates the ast ronomical date of t he deluge (22±1 October 10,465B.C.). Thus the Giza complex had

been sacred to global deluge in 10,465B.C. as well. Symbolical graves in the pyramids have been sacred to

victims, to their souls. The treasures, things and tools in the closed rooms of the pyramids are the heavenly
