This edition is No VII of the Champlain Society. This copy is #46 of an

Voyages, Discoveries, and Settlements made by the French in the West
Indies and New France by commission …. Wherein is contained the Moral,
Natural, and Geographical History of the Provinces described; with the
requisite tables and maps.”. Marc Lescarbot (c. 1570–1641) was a French
author, poet and lawyer. He is best known for his Histoire de la Nouvelle-
France (1609), based on his expedition to Acadia (1606–1607) and
research into French exploration in North America. Considered one of the
first great books in the history of Canada, it was printed in three editions,
and was translated into German and twice into English. Lescarbot also
wrote numerous poems. His dramatic poem Théâtre de Neptune was
performed at Port Royal as what the French claim was the first European

Nova Scotia's importance to the trade and military security of her Colonies in North America. A trenchant
restatement of Britain's pretensions to Nova Scotia or Acadia against the claims of the French, stressing its
importance to the trade and security of her other American colonies. Written by William Shirley and William
Mildmay, the English commissioners appointed after the Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle (1748) to negotiate the
dispute with France over the boundaries of Acadia, the work was designed to counter the French memorials
and to respond specifically to a certain pamphlet written by Mathieu François Pidansat de Mairobert

Truly Joseph Howe'. The litho has some light

condition. $500.00 Joseph Howe, PC (December 13, 1804 – June 1, 1873) was a Nova Scotian journalist, politician, public
servant, and poet. Howe is often ranked as one of Nova Scotia's most admired politicians and his considerable
skills as a journalist and writer have made him a provincial legend. He was born the son of John Howe and
Mary Edes at Halifax and inherited from his loyalist father an undying love for Great Britain and her Empire.
At age 23, the self-taught but widely read Howe purchased the Novascotian, soon making it into a popular and
influential newspaper. He reported extensively on debates in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly and travelled
to every part of the province writing about its geography and people. In 1835, Howe was charged with seditious
libel, a serious criminal offence, after the Novascotian published a letter attacking Halifax politicians and
police for pocketing public money. Howe addressed the jury for more than six hours, citing example after

example of civic corruption. The judge called for Howe's conviction, but swayed by his passionate address,
jurors acquitted him in what is considered a landmark case in the struggle for a free press in Canada. The next
year, Howe was elected to the assembly as a liberal reformer, beginning a long and eventful public career. He
was instrumental in helping Nova Scotia become the first British colony to win responsible government in 1848. He served as premier of Nova Scotia from 1860 to 1863 and led the unsuccessful fight against Canadian
Confederation from 1866 to 1868. Having failed to persuade the British to repeal Confederation, Howe joined
the federal cabinet of John A. Macdonald in 1869 and played a major role in bringing Manitoba into the union.
Howe became the third Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia in 1873, but died after only three weeks in office. 120. Hunter, Rev. Anna L (Memo: From 1966 to September 1973). Highland A.M.E.

was a Canadian statesman and Father of Confederation. In the years leading up to
Confederation, Cartier was a dominant figure in the politics of Canada East as
leader of the Parti bleu. In 1838 he returned to Montreal after a year in exile for
his role in the Lower Canada Rebellion. He officially entered politics in 1848.
During his long career he promoted the establishment of the Civil Code as the formal law of Canada East, instead of sole use of common law as was present in
Canada West. He also promoted the introduction of primary education in the
Item # 159 province. Cartier had several reasons for supporting Confederation, notably his
fear of American expansion. He died in London, England on May 20, 1873.
