    TH E R E M A Y B E N O B E T T E R E X A M P L E O F Atlantic Citys new determination to be seen as more than just a gambling resort than the line-up of entertainment, special events and nightclub goings-on scheduled for New Years weekend 2011.

With New Years Eve falling on a Friday night, and the city somewhat of a weekend getaway specialist to begin with, this years New Years celebration may be setting a new high for Atlantic City.

Consider, for example, just the entertainment lined up in casino showrooms, which this year offers an eclec-tic and demographically diverse line-up.

New Years Eve, show-goers can ring in the holiday with blues legend B.B. King (Harrahs Resort), current rock stars Maroon 5 (House of Blues), classic crooner and casino staple Bobby Vinton (Resorts), Grammy-award winning singer Sarah McLaughlan (Caesars) or Hoff, Longoria, Richard and Spencer from the cast of the Broadway musical Jersey Boys (Tropicana).

Think about it, Broadway tunes, classic blues, modern rock, Vintons classic crooning or McLaughlans mellow song stylings thats a lot of different genres and big stars in one place.

Check out Vegas this New Years Eve, for instance. Theyve got Tony Orlando, Kool & The Gang and David Copperfield. While we love when those guys play here, it just doesnt come close to Atlantic Citys line-up.

And while theres no entertainment czar making sure A.C.s line-up is this diverse, the casinos do seem to be booking acts with the whole city in mind, rather than just every casino for themselves.

This is what everybody has been saying and working for all year, says Jeffrey Vasser, executive director of the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority. We know we have to make the city an entertainment destination. Everyone is trying to do that. We have to demonstrate to our visitors that there is so much more going on here than gambling. Whether its the restau-rants, the nightclubs and most importantly the enter-tainers were bringing in.

And theres a lot more than just those groups coming in for the holiday weekend.

Hip-hop fans will start to party a little early with rap-per Wiz Khalifa at the House of Blues Dec. 29 and 30. The Soup host and stand-up comedian Joel McHale is at the Borgata New Years Eve.

Other New Years Eve performers and events include Jerry Blavats New Years Eve Party at the Taj Mahal, the B Street band at Trump Plaza, Gossip Girls Leighton Meester at Dusk at Caesars (for a second year), and the Shannon Twins from The Girls Next Door at The Pool at Harrahs.

There is a diversity there and you even have some crossover, Vasser says. For instance, Sarah

McLaughlans fans might not necessarily think about coming to Atlantic City for New Years. But they will come and see the city, eat in the restaurants and some of them may even stay over a night and go see Carrie Underwood on New Years Day.

Oh yeah. Did we mention that Saturday, New Years Day, is just as jam-packed with entertainment as New Years Eve?

Headliners for Jan. 1 are led by superstar Underwood (Borgata), R&B greats The OJays at the Hilton, rock-ers Third Eye Blind at the House of Blues, Vinton for a second show at Resorts and the immortal Franki Valli at the Borgata.

Were really fortunate this year, says Vasser. With New Years Eve on Friday, were hoping to get a lot people staying over through the weekend. There really is something for everyone in this line-up.

There was a time when all casino entertainment seemed the same, he says. You had your Don Rickles, Englebert Humperdink, Steve and Edie. And they are all great performers, but there was a standard type of entertainer that you saw in the casinos. But now were appealing to all types of audiences and demographics.

One just has to look at the lineups of some of the casinos, such as the Borgata, which will bring McHale, Underwood and Valli in for the same weekend, or the Showboats House of Blues, which has scheduled Wiz Khalifa, Maroon 5 and Third Eye Blind over four succes-sive nights, to see the commitment the citys casinos as a whole have made.

At the same time, Vintons run at Resorts, as well as The OJays at the Hilton and Valli at the Borgata, show the classic casino entertainer still has room in the new Atlantic City.

Throw in the pumping beats at the citys nightclubs, parties at bars and restaurants around the resort and then, just if youre into it, the thrill of some casino action.

Well, we ask you, where are you going to find better entertainment this New Years Eve/Day? N

Incredible Run Ends for O.C.s PriorAn iron-man run of towering proportions has sadly come to an end, as Ted Prior, whos been performing spot-on renditions of Elvis for more years than Elvis was alive, will be missing his first Ocean City First Night Celebration since the New Years Eve tradition began. A Galloway resident born in Atlantic City, Prior has been musically active for about 50 years, and has been a highly popular fixture during every First Night Celebration. Unfortunately, treatment associated with a recent brain cancer diagnosis has forced Prior to cancel his scheduled appearance this Dec. 31. The hardest thing about all this is having to miss a show, said Prior in a release. Thats never happened to me before. I can recall performing with a 101 [degree] temperature at the Split Rail Tavern in Cardiff. The bartender revived me between sets with shots of ginger brandy. During his early music career, Prior played dance parties and formed a group with longtime boyhood friend Jim Albertson called the Other Brothers (a spin-off of the Everly Brothers). He was steered toward a career impersonating The King through his personal love of Elvis music, and through the encouragement he received from others when he performed Elvis songs live. I studied Elvis movies, his moves, and eventually developed an Elvis a style of my own, said Prior, who is exacting in all aspects of his performances, from the sound system to his mannerisms and interaction with audiences. A skilled guitarist, Prior was a barracks balladeer during a two-year stint in the U.S. Army. After his discharge from the service he was hired to lead a touring band that performed coast to coast. He was a touring musician for 15 years, playing with many of the nations most outstanding musicians.Im amazed at his many abilities, says Priors manager, Neil Regina. He has memorized hundreds of songs, and other musicians contact him frequently about arrangements. He leads three groups Teddy and the Riptides [a 50s rock band], Early Morning Reign [a folk ensemble] and his El-Live Elvis tribute show. He sings every song by memory and is much more than just an Elvis performer. Prior has recorded numerous albums of both Elvis favorites and original music he penned himself. He has a recording studio in his home with an extensive music library. According to Regina, Priors fans hope he will be back soon and have been extending well wishes during his trying period of inactivity. Fans wishing to send their regards can do so to: Ted Prior, 50 Aspen Court, Galloway, N.J. 08205. Priors friends, Joe and Margo Dailey, who perform a variety of country classics and oldies music, will fill in for him at Ocean Citys First Night Celebration. Right now Ted is getting chemotherapy treatments, says Ocean City publicist Mark Soifer. He sounds strong and upbeat when I talk to him, so were hoping for the best. Ray Schweibert

Captain Beefheart: 1941-2010Roughly a month before he would have turned 70, Don Van Vliet, better known as his adopted stage name Captain Beefheart, has passed away after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. The disease had crippled the avant-garde musician and painter by the time of his death in a northern California hospital on Friday, Dec. 17. Van Vliet had kept himelf out of the public eye since retiring from music in 1982. His painting, however, continued and there were several exhibitions of his work. As a BBC remembrance states, Van Vliets work, whether in music or drawing, was never mainstream and only ever gained a relatively small following, but he was a larger-than-life character who pushed the boundaries of his art in a way which influenced many who followed in his wake. Captain Beefhearts music, played with his Magic Band a stew of Delta blues, free jazz, psychedelic rock and experimental classical was as influential and powerful as Bob Dylans in the 1960s (but much less accessible) and would inspire a broad range of artists from the worlds of rock, punk, free jazz, psy-chadelic blues and experimental music. Van Vliets kaleidoscope of musical composition may not have been mainstream even today, it sounds as beautifully strange and absurd as ever but he found a common ground with fellow Californian Frank Zappa. After struggling with the executives at A&M, which released Captain Beefhearts blues-heavy 1967 debut Safe as Milk, Van Vliet took his reformed Magic Band and signed with his teenage chum Zappas label Straight Records. This would afford Van Vliet the freedom to create one of the most original, bizarre and captivating recordings of all time, the landmark 1969 double album, Trout Mask Replica. The late Zappa, who passed away in 1993, was not simply an early friend of Van Vliets, he was also an early fan, producer and co-conspirator. Zappa and Beefhearts album Bongo Fury is considered a classic and captured the two on a joint reunion tour in the spring of 1975. One contemporary artist whose work has been heavily influenced by the late Van Vliet is Tom Waits. The singer-songwriter sent a tribute to Captain Beefheart to the Los Angeles Times, which was issued Monday, Dec. 20. In part, Waits said of Van Vliet: He was like the scout on a wagon train. He was the one who goes ahead and shows the way. ... He was a demanding bandleader, a transcendental composer (with emphasis on the dental), up there with Ornette [Coleman], Sun Ra and Miles [Davis]. He drew in the air with a burnt stick. He described the indescribable. Hes an underground stream and a big yellow blimp. Don Van Vliet will be remembered for his creative genius, eccentric lyrics and striking free-jazz style of the blues. He also helped propel the art-rock movement that Bob Dylan also helped develop in the mid-to-late 1960s. While he still performed and recorded he recorded 12 albums within 15 years Van Vliet sang about things nobody else did (or could); things like strawberry butterflies and Veterans Day poppies. In his beefy Howlin Wolf growl, and with his oddball yet carefully orchestrated instrumen-tation whirling and shivering around him, Van Vliet was like no other singer. Hell be remembered for his individuality and refusal to conform to mainstream tastes or methods as much as for his eccentric nature. His art in all of its many forms shines on like a tin teardrop. Stress-Free HolidaysBy Whitney Ullman

BY T H E T I M E T H I S C O L U M N is published, Christmas will be a few days away and Ill bet that the majority of you will be doing your last-minute shop-ping. Of course at this late time, the traffic is horrendous, people lose their patience easily and the lines are extremely long at pretty much every store. Its a shame because this time of year is supposed to be joyous and gratifying, but concurrently it can rapidly turn into a stressful and burdensome time.

Stress from the holidays can affect every aspect of your life, including making deci-sions you may regret especially when you are lacking in the money depart-ment. Your willingness and intentions of purchasing gifts for your loved ones can

quickly become an unpleasant experi-ence and the stress from the mixed emo-tions may cause you to make irrational decisions. Examples include purchasing something on your credit card when you know you cant pay it back for awhile, or going over budget, or even as severe as spending your savings. All this just to make everyone happy and to follow proper protocol for holiday gift giving.

Please dont do this to yourself. Especially now in this down economy when most of us are in the same boat. We can all relate. According to Elizabeth Scott, in an article she wrote on managing the seemingly inev-itable holiday season stress, she gives five non-monetary reasons for this situation.

    1. Doing too much: Too many activi-ties, even if they are fun activities, can cul-minate in too much holiday stress and leave us feeling frazzled rather than fulfilled.

    2. Eating, drinking and spending too much: An over abundance of par-ties and gift-giving occasions lead many people to eat, drink, and be merry often to excess. The temptation to overindulge can cause many people the lasting stress of dealing with consequences that can linger long after the season is over.

    3. Too much togetherness: Even in the most close-knit families you can over-dose on togetherness, making it hard for family members to maintain a healthy bal-

ance between bonding and alone time. 4. Not enough togetherness:

Loneliness can be a huge problem. When the world seems to be gathering with fam-ily, those who rely more on friends for support can feel deserted and alone.

    5. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): This is an often-unrecognized problem, which is a by-product of the sea-sons changing from fall to winter. As day-light diminishes and the weather causes us to stay indoors, many are affected.

So, as you can see, it is manageable to handle this holiday stress if you can remember some of these things. However, when the holidays are over and you are still just plain old stressed out, here are some tips to help with that stress reduction.

First, stay positive throughout the holi-days. Next, be sure to keep yourself in shape and exercise when possible. Also, eat right and decrease your fat and sugar intake. Third, dont drink too much cof-fee or caffeinated beverages. Get plenty of rest (at least eight hours a night) and try to meditate or do Yoga right before the big family gathering. A message from a special someone on Christmas morning would be nice, too. Finally, remember that you cant control everything and that you can always ask the friends and family with you to help with certain problems that do arise.

And remember to be safe while travel-ing and shopping. There are many people who are out there drinking excessively, spending too much, being careless and still getting behind the wheel. Be aware of your surroundings and most of all take time for yourself. Although it may sound selfish, you come first because if you are not in good health or good sprits then the people around you will be affected. This is a time for joy and quality time with your friends and family. Use it to your advantage and treasure all of the happy moments. N

Vintons Variety Act By David J. Spatz

NEARLY 60 YEARS HAVE PASSED, but a very durable thread still connects Bobby Vintons first Boardwalk gig with the one hell work next week.

As a teenaged bandleader on the old Steel Pier in 1952, and as the 2010-2011 New Years weekend headliner at Resorts Casino Hotel, Vinton will still be out in front of a big band.

Old habits die hard or not at all. Still touring at 75 and nearly a half-century removed from his first hit record, Vintons out there working with a much larger band than most acts.

I dont know any other way, he says simply. But one of the things that makes it easier for me to work like this is that I write all of the arrangements.

A lifetime of touring, Vinton explains, has taught him to study and learn the nuances of individual musicians and bands around the country. When hes booked into to a particular market, Vintons been known to rewrite arrange-ments to some of his songs to take advan-tage of any regional musical subtleties Vinton may have detected in the past.

I know what a band can do in, say, Seattle, he says. Most arrangers dont travel, but I do. So I know what all these bands are capable of doing, and I write the music so they can play it.

Although he may incorporate a syn-thesizer into his show, he doesnt let it become the dominant sound. Vinton still augments his traveling rhythm section with horns and strings.

Improvements in audio technology and sound systems have also made touring easier for the entertainer who amassed a string of Top 10 hits in the 1960s, like Blue Velvet, Blue on Blue and I Love How You Love Me.

In 1974, when he thought his record-ing career was over, he surprised everyone himself included when he released the chart-topping single My Melody of Love, a polka-flavored song that earned him the nickname The Polish Prince.

The song stereotyped him somewhat, he acknowledges. I certainly do have a Polish audience, he says with a laugh from his home on Floridas Gulf Coast, only now they bring their Italian relatives.

My Melody of Love gave Vinton a true measure of career longevity, but he does admit the song led to the mistaken impression that his act is nothing but one big polka.

Its a whole lot more than that, he says. Its probably one of the last of the variety shows.

Vinton will become a footnote to Atlantic City casino-era history as the first headliner to play Resorts Casino Hotel under its new ownership. The pop singer and musician will close out 2010 on Dec. 31 and then return to the Superstar Theater stage again on Jan. 1.

Now in a position to be able to pick and choose when and where he wants to work, Vinton says Atlantic City has always held a special place in his heart.

Its where he cut his chops as a band-leader in the early 1950s, where he head-lined sold-out shows as a young solid-gold recording artist in the 1960s and where hes headlined just about every show-room since working his first Boardwalk casino gig in 1979.

I cant believe Im being accepted [by audiences] more today than I was 20 years ago, he says. Its like [people] are discovering me all over again, and in the case of the younger people, theyre dis-covering me for the first time.

Indian casinos around the country have opened up a new market for Vinton. Hes playing places he never visited before Native-American casinos were created, which means people who only knew him from his records or TV appearances are finally getting to see him live for the first time.

Im the ideal act for [Indian casinos], he says. They know they cant keep put-ting in country and rock acts all the time. So they put me in there on a Thursday or a Friday and forget about it, Im sold out. They want variety entertainment, and thats what I do I sing, I play [instru-ments], I tell jokes. They havent seen that since Sammy [Davis Jr.].

Recently, Vinton played an Indian casi-no in Washington state in an area hed never visited during his career.

They were so hungry for variety that they gave my overture a standing ova-tion, Vinton says with a laugh. Thats the first time that ever happened. N

THE WORLD SERIES OF POKER circuit events exist for a lot of rea-sons not the least of which is to promote the WSOP brand. But theres also an underlying goal of promoting poker both as a game, and as an indus-try, by bringing new players to the game and big-time live tournaments.

A perfect example is Dwyte Pilgrim, who gained a lot of fame on last sea-sons circuit tour. Pilgrim, of Brooklyn, but who has lived in Atlantic City while learning his poker trade, took this years Borgata Open Championship, ironically a World Poker Tour event, and a $733K cash. The win instantly put him on the list of name pros.

Pilgrim was at this years circuit events, now finishing up at Harrahs Resort, but did not register a big win.

But an even better example of what the circuit events can be is probably Matthew Waxman of Parkland, Fla. Waxman is an emerging pro who gained his first major win at the circuits main event last week, good for a $117,797 cash. That took his tournament winnings to over $540,000. He then added another about $26K by finishing 10th in the circuits $10,000 buy-in, ($9,700 + $300) regional cham-pionship, the last player to go out before the final table.

Waxman played these tournaments against such big time stars as T.J. Cloutier, Kathy Liebert, WSOP main event runner-up John Racener, and Vanessa Selbst.

He also played against Pilgrim in both tournaments.

No one can say if Waxman is on the verge of stardom, but the circuit events have just sent his stock way up.

But perhaps the best example of what the circuit events can be came in Event 7 of the circuit meet, a $300 buy-in ring event. Jared Eisenberg of Long Island, a pure amateur, bested a field of 482 play-ers, one of the circuits biggest turnouts, to take home a $30,156 win.

Though the event didnt pit him against many pros, the most amazing thing is how close Eisenberg came to skipping the whole tournament.

Me and my buddy Mike came out from Long Island and we almost went back, Eisenberg told the WSOP. It was icy and snowy, I mean, Ive never seen weather on the LIE [Long Island

Expressway] like that before. But man, I am so happy we decided to go ahead and make the drive.

The only previous recorded cash for Eisenberg was a $1,366 cash at this years Borgata summer open.

Eisenberg gets a WSOP Circuit ring, a great story, and gives hope to amateurs everywhere.

Despite all that, some poker commen-tators think this years Harrahs event has been a misstep by the WSOP. As weve noted several times before, the WSOP restructured its circuit events this year to attract more players.

Several circuit events prior to the Harrahs event had been setting records for field size, and the Harrahs events seemed to be keeping pace when 1,250 players turned out for event one, a record for the casino. But then fields started to fall off.

Sundays Regional Championship, a $10,000 buy-in event that was one of the centerpieces of the circuit restructur-ing, attracted a field of only 136 players. In comparison, the first of the regional championships, held in September near Chicago, drew 226 players.

The championship event (which was still underway at press time) did bring out an impressive list of pros.

The Day 1 chip leader, for example, was Selbst, one of the hottest players in the game right now with more than $3 million in tournament winnings this year. Unfortunately, she did not make it to the bubble.

Legendary pro Cloutier was also in the mix and so were several other pros such as Liebert. Many pros who commonly play in A.C. were on hand such as Chris Klodnicki, who had the chip lead going into the final table.

The final table will also be televised on VERSUS Network, marking the first time in three years that a WSOP Circuit Championship will appear on national television. Coverage of this and the other three Regional Championship events will air in mid-2011.

So thats a nice little plug the city can look forward to. In the end, the question is was the circuit event a success, or a loss of momentum for the WSOP?

We know one guy who thinks it was a success for sure Jared Eisenberg. N

If pictures are really worth a thousand words, a publicity shot of Joel Mchale speaks volumes.theres a photo of the actor-host of e!s

The Soup, biting on a shirt as its being pulled over his head. Mchale, 39, appears pretty stressed out.

But theres reason for Mchale to be frayed a bit at the edges. the star of the NBc sitcom Community, also hosts the weekly Soup. he recently finished work on the film The Big Year, which will be released in 2011 and features a big cast that includes steve Martin, Jack Black and owen wilson.

Mchale is also on tour, which stops New years eve (friday, Dec. 31) at the Borgata, and he has a wife and two young sons.

thats a tall order to juggle.its definitely a lot to balance, Mchale

tells Atlantic City Weekly. its hard to manage but i love the work. i cant imag-ine how fortunate i am. its a lot of work but its great work. it gets a little busy but thats all right. i cant be negative. i could be an out of work actor, which is how you describe most actors. who knew that this is where i would be 10 years ago? im doing what i want to do, which is some-thing not everyone can say.

Mchale isnt a typical stand-up. Much of his show is filled with pop culture.

what i do onstage is an expansion of The Soup, Mchale says. i just go more in depth and i can say things that i cant say on television. i also do some personal stuff and talk about my family.

according to Mchale, most celebrities are fine with his barbs.

every single reality star that i have ever run into has said thanks for making fun of me and i would love to be on the show. its great that no one has tried to kill me yet, he says.

But some celebrities must have taken exception to Mchales shots from The Soup.

oh yeah, Mchale says with a laugh. im not going to get into specifics about that. youll have to come out to the show to find out about that. i cant give that away. thats so damned entertaining.

perhaps this will be Mchales last exten-sive stand-up tour for quite some time since he has more films on the horizon

and he is committed to Community.i love that show, Mchale says. i was

always an actor. i fell upon hosting The Soup and its been great since its a lot of fun to do. i dont regret a minute of my time on The Soup. we try to be as funny as possible in our weekly half-hour. the show has provided for my family. ill always be thankful for it. it has more than paid the bills. i established myself in the industry through The Soup.

But i always wanted to do a show like Community. [executive producer] Dan harmon [The Sarah Silverman Program] is a genius that i would follow anywhere into battle. Dan is just incredibly talented. he helps set us apart from everything else on television. the guy has such a brilliant mind. i would work on anything hes working on. im part of a talented cast that hopes to rise to the level of the writ-ing, which is a feat in itself.

everything seems to be going Mchales way. well, its going great now, but its not perfect, Mchale says. if life were perfect that picture of me [biting the shirt going over my head] would disappear. also, i would be able to spend more time with my children.

they give me most of the joy in my life, but i cant complain. look at the sol-diers in afghanistan. they dont see their children for such a long time and they are in harms way. those are people i take my hat off to. those guys are heroes, who actually dont put themselves first, which isnt so with actors. i commend our sol-diers. they sacrifice.

But im in a totally different spot. i could never complain since i do get to see my children and we have so much fun together. im working and thats a good thing. i hope to remain busy. i hope Community takes off. shows like ours need time. look at Seinfeld and Cheers. those shows didnt finally really hit until their second or third season. you need time to establish yourself. our show is very ambitious. its not like other com-edies. a show like ours needs time to con-nect. hopefully this show will be running a long time and ill be a part of it.

part of the reason Mchale loves report-ing to the set everyday is to work with television and film icon chevy chase.

he is just incredible, Mchale says. he has better stories than anyone and we all know how talented he is. theres nobody like him. its not just chevy chase, who is great to work with. its the whole show. i hit the jackpot with Community. n

Portmans Tour de ForceLocal dancers react to Natalie Portmans convincing performance as a prima ballerina in Black Swan By Tamara deMent

    Wh i l e s o m e m a y b e a t t e n d i n g productions of The Nutcracker this holiday sea-son, others may be getting their annual ballet fix at the movies.

after its release in local theaters last Friday, the film Black Swan, starring natalie Portman as a prima ballerina, has been capturing the interest of atlantic Countys dance community.

directed by darren aronofsky, the film tells the story of newly made principle dancer, nina sayers (Portman) who is struggling to cope with the demands of performing the main role in the classical ballet Swan Lake.

one aspect of the film that has amazed many audi-ence members particularly those with dance back-grounds was the authenticity of Portmans perfor-mance despite her inexperience with ballet.

i was really impressed, says adrianna Poindexter, a dance performance major at Richard stockton College. all the dancing in the movie was beautiful.

When it comes to portraying ballet authentically in movies, there is no fooling those who have studied the intricacies of the art form for years.

honestly, i was skeptical before seeing the movie, e-mails healani harper, a ballet instructor for atlantic Contemporary ballet theater academy. as a dancer i always feel sort of defensive when a dance movie comes out, especially when an outsider is playing the main role.

While there are precedents for actresses taking on ballerina roles in films, not all have been convincing. Varying camera angles and dance doubles can only do so much to disguise what the actress lacks in bal-let technique.

atlantic City ballet soloist sara longren recalls being unimpressed with Julia stiles performance in the 2001 movie Save the Last Dance.

it was a completely campy movie with even more cheesy dance scenes, says longren.

Portmans attention to detail in this regard in Black Swan was of particular interest to dancers.

i feel that natalie Portman really encompassed the look and carry of a ballerina, says longren. Watching her move in the dancing scenes and even how she walked was very impressive and believable.

Portman herself, having studied ballet as a child, has said she underestimated the challenges of imper-sonating a professional dancer.

i really thought i was better than i was, Portman told the New York Times, if i had known how not close to ready i was, i never would have tried it. im glad i was a little ignorant slash arrogant.

i give her a lot of credit, adds longren, for taking on such a challenging role and doing so successfully.

but not all were entirely satisfied with Portmans

dancing.according to Victoria Clark, the director of new

motion dance studio in somers Point, Portman definitely got the body-type down, but the pained expression on her face seemed unnecessary.

as Black Swan continues to do well at the box office, some figures in the broader dance community are unhappy with the negative light in which ballet is portrayed in the film.

ashley bouder, a principle with new york City

ballet, wrote on The Huffington Post that Black Swan has stirred up controversy amongst dancers because it promotes and exaggerates ballet clichs.

We all know those stereotypes of the ballet world, writes bouder, the stage mom, the anorexic or bulimic, the other ballerina out to get your roles, the obsessive perfectionist, etc. they are all represented in this movie to an extreme level.

such characters were also depicted in the 2000 movie Center Stage.

it does start to get irritating that those things keep popping up in every dance movie that you see, says Poindexter.

Rain Ross, an assistant professor of dance at Richard stockton College says the films hyperbolized stereo-types didnt shock her.

Perpetuation of stereotypes, she says, is part of what hollywood does.

For many local dance artists, the use of these ballet stock characters didnt keep the film from resonating with them.

i was able to identify with [the film] on a real and personal level, writes harper via e-mail. although there is a lot of joy in dancing, there is a lot of pain and to put it plainly craziness that goes along with it.

longren echoed this sentiment.[the movie] certainly gives a glimpse into the

struggles we all face at some point, says longren.as dancers continue to digest the films depiction of

ballet mingling with the macabre facets of psychologi-cal drama, some are hoping that the popularity of the movie will generate a heightened interest in ballet.

[ballet is] not what people in my generation would deem fun, says Poindexter. maybe this will turn it around a little bit.

as an educator of dance, Clark also had such a hope.before seeing the movie, Clark said she was sur-

prised at how the films previews appealed to so many people outside the dance community and felt that its allure could potentially help facilitate a resurgence of ballet in mainstream culture.

however, upon leaving the theater on sunday eve-ning, Clarks optimism dissipated.

i couldnt decide whether [or not] i liked it, says Clark. is it going to open doors for the dance world? i dont think so and that was my hope.

similarly, Ross said that while the movie may help make ballet more accessible to the masses, chances are, it will simply be enjoyed for its entertainment value.

When dance is represented in popular culture, it makes [dancers] feel like we have a place in popular culture, explains Ross. the respect [Portman] has shown towards the art form will do more for ballet than the movie. n
