    USFA Focus on Fire SafetYThe lnstall, tnspect, and protect Gampaign is part of the United states Fire Administration's effort toreduce fire deaths and injuries across the nation. More than 3,000 people die in home fires each yearin the united states; most of which are in homes without a working smoke alarm' A working, properlyinstalled smoke alarm lowers your chances of dying in a fire.

    The mission of this campaign is to encourage Americans to practice fire safety by 1) installing andmaintaining smoke alarms and residential fire sprinklers, which can help save the lives of residentsand firefighters, 2) practicing fire escape plans, and 3) performing a home safety walk-through toremove fire hazards from the home'

    A few residential smoke alarm tips include:o place properly installed and maintained smoke alarms both inside and outside of sleepingareas and on every level of your home'

    . lnterconnected smoke alarms are best, because if one sounds, they all sound'o Get smoke alarms that can sound fast. The u.s. Fire Administration recommends that everyresidbnce and place where people sleep be equipped with both ionization and photoelectricsmoke alarms or dual sensor smoke alarms, which contain bothionization and photoelectricsmoke sensors.

    Testing smoke alarms monthly and changing alkaline batteries at least once every year, or asinstructed. You can use a date you already know, like your birthday or when you change yourclocks as a reminder.Consider buying a long-life (lithium) battery-powered smoke alarm, which may last up to tenyears with no battery change. lf a smoke alarm sounds during normal cooking or whenbathing, press the hush button if the smoke alarm has one. Open the door or window or fan thearea with a towelto get the air moving.Do not disable the smoke alarm or take out the batteries. lf this happens often, the smokealarm will need to be relocated.

    o Remember to Change Your Battery ln Your Smoke Alarms!AFRD 2013 Citizen's Fire AcademyAlanta Fire Rescue Department Citizens Fire Academy is designed for community leaders and othercitizens who have a genuine desire to reduce the number of lives lost and the amount of propertydamage in our city.The program covers departmental policies, procedures, staffing, and the "why's" of Fire Departmentoperations. This dynamic eight day program provides knowledge about fire prevention, rescue,communication, hazardous material identification, fire extinguisher training, basic first aid, and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Citizens will be allowed to participate in practical drills, bothfirefighting and emergency medical exercises.participants.will complete this course being more conscious of their environment and will becomemore safety oriented.     Place off the Streets (Safe SPOTS)is a program designed to provide immediate assistance to individuals and families facing

    and/or domestic violence at any time the need arises. Atlanta Firefighters, within the confines ofStations, will utilize its facilities as "SafeSPOTS" for: Abandoned infants, abused children, victims

    commercial sexual exploitation of children, victims of sexual assault, and victims of domesticis a temporary haven where abandoned infants can be left until: They are received by

    facilities and/or assistance is provided by the Department of Family and Children Servicesvictims of abuse can come to receive emergency medical treatment for their injuries;can be established in confidentiality away from an aggressor; confidential notification of

    officials is made for domestic abuse incidents, if requested by persons 18 years ofor older. Mandatory reporting is required if victim is under the age of 18.
