This Jesus whom you saw ascending into heaven will return as you saw him go, alleluia. FIRST READING: Acts 1:1-11. RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 47. RESPONSE: God has gone up with shouts of joy. The Lord goes up with trumpet blast. 1. All peoples clap your hands. Cry to God with shouts of joy! For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome, the great king over all the earth. 2. God goes up with shouts of joy. The Lord goes up with trumpet blast. Sing praise for God, sing praise! Sing praise to our king; sing praise. 3. God is king of all the earth. Sing praise with all your skill. Our God reigns over the nations. God sits upon his holy throne. SECOND READING: Ephesians 4:1-13. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, alleluia! Go and make disciples of all nations, says the Lord; I am with you always, to the close of the age. Alleluia. GOSPEL: Mark 16:15-20. COMMUNION ANTIPHON: Behold, I am with you always, even until the end of the age, alleluia. Ascension Ascension, by Giotto di Bondone, 14th century T HE ASCENSION can be seen both as an absence and a presence. As an absence the Ascension marks the end of that privileged time when the disciples could physically see, hear and touch Jesus in exactly the same way as we can see, hear and touch one another. But the Ascension is much more than an end; it is also a beginning of a new kind of existence for the Word made flesh: as the Crucified and Risen Christ, Jesus is received into the fullness of the Father’s glory. At the same time he is henceforth fully available to be received by all his disciples everywhere and at any time: I am with you always; yes, to the end of time. In the mystery of the Ascension the veil between this world and the next is lifted a little as we are assured that the Glorified Christ now fills all creation (Ephesians 4:10, The one who rose higher than all the heavens to fill all things is none other than the one who descended). This suggests that the glorification of Christ means the glorification also of humanity (In this way we are all to come to unity in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God). In terms of the unimaginable love of God, the Ascension reveals “…the space in which believers of all times and nations can encounter Christ as the embodiment of God’s love” (A. Kelly: God is Love p 60). Our encounter with the Risen and Ascended Lord can take place at any time and in any place; restrictions of time and place are irrelevant to the Lord of Glory. Of course there are privileged moments for an intense experience of the Glorified Christ: In his Word: when we seek out a quiet time and place to meditatively ponder the Word of God, Jesus is present and explains to us the Scriptures as he did on the first Easter evening to the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Our hearts too burn within us as he gently enlightens us. In his Sacraments: when we come together to celebrate the Passion , Death and Resurrection, the Risen Lord is really and truly present in his Eucharist feast and in all the sacraments by the power of his Spirit. In our neighbours: when we reach out in love to those in need we are, as he told us, reaching out to him (you did it to me). When we touch the wounds of our brothers and sisters we are touching the wounds of Christ, still marking his Risen Body. In ministry: when we proclaim – by words or by example or by both – that Jesus is Lord, then Jesus is in fact present . Like the apostles we are not left staring into the sky: we are drawn into the new world of Resurrection love and power and we look outwards to those still waiting for a sign. We become witnesses to the Risen Ascended Lord, Alleluia. Ascension

Ascension, by Giotto di Bondone, 14th century

THE ASCENSION can be seen both as an absence and a presence. As an absence the Ascension marks the end of that privileged

time when the disciples could physically see, hear and touch Jesus in exactly the same way as we can see, hear and touch one another. But the Ascension is much more than an end; it is also a beginning of a new kind of existence for the Word made flesh: as the Crucif ied and Risen Christ, Jesus is received into the fullness of the Father’s g lor y. At the same time he is henceforth fully available to be received by a l l h is disciples everywhere and at any time: I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.

In the mystery of the Ascension the veil between this world and the next is lif ted a little as we are assured that the Glorif ied Christ now f ills all creation (Ephesians 4:10, The one who rose higher than all the heavens to f ill all things is none other than the one who descended). This suggests that the glorif ication of Christ means the glor i f icat ion also of humanity (In this way we are all to come to unity in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God).

In terms of the unimaginable love of God, the Ascension reveals “…the space in which believers of all times and nations can encounter Christ as the embodiment of God’s love” (A. Kelly: God is Love p 60). Our encounter with the Risen and Ascended Lord can take place at any time and

in any place; restrictions of time and place are irrelevant to the Lord of Glory.

Of course there are privileged moments for an intense experience of the Glorif ied Christ:

In his Word: when we seek out a quiet t ime and place to meditatively ponder the Word of God, J e s u s i s p r e s e n t and explains to us the Scr iptures a s he did on the f irst Eas ter evening to the disciples on the road to Emmaus . Our hearts too burn within us as he gently enlightens us.

In his Sacraments: w h e n w e c o m e together to celebrate the Passion , Death and Resurrec t ion ,

the Risen Lord is really and truly present in his Eucharist feast and in all the sacraments by the power of his Spirit.
