WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL

Requirements and Conditions for Athletic Participation

All students are encouraged to participate in the accomplished athletic tradition of Westlake High School. As a member of the Marmonte League and California Interscholastic Federation, all Westlake High School student athletes must comply with the following requirements for participation: Residence Eligibility: Students enrolled at Westlake High School are eligible to participate in athletics. Incoming ninth grade students are eligible no matter what school attendance area they live in. However, some 10th-12th grade students exercising their school of choice option may be restricted or denied athletic eligibility. Questions regarding residence eligibility should be brought to the attention of the Assistant Principal, Brad Katz, or the Athletic Director, Kyle Kegley. Scholastic Eligibility: The CIF-SS and the Conejo Valley Unified School District require students, including entering ninth graders, to earn a 2.0 grade point average during the grading period prior to their season of sport. Ninth graders must earn a minimum of a 2.0 GPA on their eighth grade report card in June. Students not earning a 2.0 GPA may file a co-curricular appeal in order to regain their eligibility. The appeal decision will be based on any extenuating circumstances that may have caused the low grades and the student’s plan to improve. Students may only be granted one academic appeal during their eight semesters of attendance at Westlake High School. Furthermore, students are required to pass at least four subjects per grading period and be making progress toward graduation in order to participate. Athletic Clearance All students wishing to try out for any sport at WHS, must complete the following steps to be cleared to participate: 1) create an online clearance account, 2) create a clearance for each sport in which they wish to participate, 3) upload a completed, valid physical form to the online account, 4) print and sign the consent letter from the online account for each sport and submit it to the athletics office. Detailed instructions for this process are included in this packet and are also available on our athletics website, www.westlakeathletics.com. The following forms are required for athletic clearance and are part of the online clearance process:

Parent Participation Consent

Authorization for Treatment of a Minor (included on official physical form)

Co-Curricular Code & Contract

Informed Consent & Liability Release

Concussion Management Form

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Form Parents and students will be required to read and electronically sign these forms online. They do not need to be printed and turned in (or uploaded) with the exception of the Authorization for Treatment which is included on the school’s official physical form. The physical form is available to download from the athletic clearance website or may be obtained from the athletics office. The completed physical form is the only form that MUST be uploaded to the online clearance. An annual physical exam is required before students may try out or participate in a sport. You must use the Westlake High School medical exam form. An opportunity to support WHS while fulfilling your physical requirement will take place during WHS Physical Day on May 19, 2018 at Body Logic Sports Therapy from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The cost is $30 per athlete. Proceeds from Physical Day benefit WHS Athletics. (Body Logic is located at 4165 East Thousand Oaks Boulevard)

Insurance: All student athletes must have accident-hospitalization insurance. Proof of adequate private insurance is required or students may purchase Myers-Stevens & Toohey & Co., Inc. school insurance to satisfy this requirement. Insurance forms for school insurance for next year will be available in the Athletic Office. Associated Student Body (ASB) Cards: All Westlake High School students participating in athletics (sports) or activities (band, tall flags, choir, cheerleading and dance) are encouraged to purchase ASB cards. The cost for an ASB Card will be $60.00 for the 2018-2019 school year. The ASB card gets you into all athletic contests for free - a substantial savings. In addition, your ASB card gets you many discounts, including reduced prices for dances and the yearbook. Transportation: In order to preserve safety and team camaraderie, CVUSD students are required to travel on busses, vans, or other transportation provided by the District to designated school sponsored activities, practices, and/or games/events. Your continued support in this effort is very much appreciated. In order to continue to deliver this valuable service to all participating students, we ask that you contribute in the following manner: $ 124.00 First Sport/Activity Individual maximum contribution: $250.00

$ 71.00 Second Sport/Activity Family maximum contribution: $500.00 $ 55.00 Third Sport/Activity No student will be excluded from participation due to a lack of sufficient funds.

Tryouts and Participation: All students are encouraged to try out for one or more teams. Westlake High School strongly supports sports participation and multi-sport athletes. However, sports may make cuts based on the optimal number of athletes on a team. Participation in summer or off-season sport physical education classes does not guarantee a spot on the final team roster. Booster Clubs: Most sports have a booster club that is managed by parent volunteers. Parents are encouraged to participate. Please strongly consider supporting our booster clubs. Booster club contributions are not required in order for a student to participate in a sport or activity. No student will be excluded from any sport or activity due to a lack of sufficient funds. Call the Athletic Department or coach if you would like more information about getting involved with a booster club. Westlake High Letter Policy: Sport Certificates are awarded at all levels of participation. Letters are awarded to varsity athletes. To receive a Letter Certificate, an athlete must participate in at least one Marmonte League contest. The student athlete must remain on the team through the conclusion of the season. Your specific sport may have a variation of this general policy. Letter awards are based on participation and will not be withheld for disciplinary reasons unless specified by the Assistant Principal of Athletics. Letters and jackets may be purchased in the student store upon presentation of your certificate. Summer Programs: Some athletic programs sponsor summer activities either through the booster club or through an independent club. If you sign up for a sport at Future Warrior Night, you will be contacted with information if there is a summer program for that sport. Participation in summer and off-season programs do not guarantee that a student will make the team. Please check www.westlakeathletics.com for additional information.

Sport Information Baseball Westlake Baseball consists of three levels: Varsity, JV and Frosh/Soph. Practices are held Monday through Friday at the WHS Baseball field. Freshman baseball players not participating in a WHS Fall or Winter sport should enroll in PE Off-Season Baseball during 7th period. Basketball (Girls) Girls Basketball offers a summer program that emphasizes all aspects of the game and will prepare players for participation in a high-level program that is committed to both the athletic and academic development of its student athletes. Tryouts will be held on Saturday, June 9th at 12:00, Monday, June 11th and Tuesday, June 12th at 5:30. The summer program will run until July 21st. During the summer, Frosh/Soph team practices will be held on days to be determined and summer league games will be played at Moorpark. There will be no basketball during the month of August per C.I.F. rules but there will be weight-lifting. For more information check our website: www.whsbasketball.com or email Coach Harry Carbonati at [email protected] or call Coach Carbonati at 805-479-8949. Cross Country Cross Country is an exciting running adventure. The terrain varies from extremely flat to challenging hills. Every runner gets to compete every week; no healthy runner ever sits on the bench. Regardless of your abilities, you can always contribute to the team! EFFORT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN SPEED! Our team is structured for all ability levels, including Frosh-Soph, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels. We encourage all athletes who are not participating in a fall sport to run cross country. Our summer training is required for all athletes wishing to compete on the team in the fall. Summer practices will be held most mornings from 8:00am-10:00am and during the school year practices will be held every day from 3:00pm-5:00pm. For more information, please email Coach Chad Scott at [email protected] and Coach Troy Burns at [email protected]. Field Hockey (Girls) There will be a few informal practices/meetings throughout spring to determine the number of players interested in playing field hockey in the fall. A summer program will be held from mid-June to the start of school in August with a break in July. The program will include practices and scrimmages that will teach the fundamentals of the sport and prepare players for the upcoming season. The summer program is for players of all skill levels but is especially important for new players as field hockey is a fall sport and games start the week after school starts. There will be a JV and a Varsity team each with 14-18 players on the roster. Rather than traditional tryouts, the coaches will be evaluating players throughout the summer practices to determine which team they are best suited for. Teams will be announced the week before school starts. During the school year, practices will be held in the stadium during 7th period (2:00-3:45). There may be an off season class available for PE credit during the winter and spring seasons. If you have any additional questions, please contact Head Coach Allison Jarman at [email protected]. Football Westlake Football consists of three teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman. Practices are held at Warrior Stadium (Varsity/JV) or the WHS auxiliary field (freshman). The season opener will be held on August 17th with weekly games continuing through November. Our summer program for players will begin on Monday, June 11th and will continue through Friday, June 30th. Practices will be held Monday through Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Players will also participate in summer weight lifting classes at WHS, as well as, some weekend passing tournaments. Fall practice will begin on July 23rd. The mandatory dead period is from July 1st through July 22nd. Sign up on Future Warrior Night at the football table to receive a letter explaining practice schedules and other important information. A welcome meeting for all new players and parents will be held on Monday, May 21st at 6:00 p.m. in the WHS Library. Please call Coach Kirksey at 805-497-6711 Extension 1103 or via e-mail at [email protected]. Warrior Pride!

Boys Lacrosse accommodates multi-sport athletes. There are no tryouts. The program takes pride in large rosters and a winning tradition. There are other outside summer leagues along with travel teams in the local area that may provide additional opportunities to play. If you have any additional questions, please contact Coach Lyndsey Munoz at [email protected]. Soccer (Boys/Girls) Westlake High School offers three levels of competition for both Boys and Girls Soccer: Varsity, Junior Varsity and Frosh/Soph. The Boys’ Varsity coach is Bill Propster and the Girls’ Varsity coach is Frank Marino. High School Soccer is a winter sport with the season running from the middle of November to the middle of February. All potential players are encouraged to participate in our summer program in order to be evaluated for our fall soccer P.E. class. The summer program will be held for both Boys and Girls beginning in June and running through July. The program will include a camp, practices, and tournaments. Westlake H.S. has one of the most successful soccer programs in Southern California. Part of our success can be attributed to our strong summer program which we encourage all players to attend. For more information, please call Bill Propster (Boys Varsity Coach) at 805-338-5514 or Frank Marino (Girls Varsity Coach) at 805-807-2563. Tryouts for soccer are held before the start of the season in November and will be announced in the Westlake High School weekly bulletin. All players are encouraged to participate in off-season club teams. There are many club & travel teams in the local area. Softball WHS Softball does not offer an organized summer program. There will be two preliminary tryout/workout dates for freshmen during the month of August. There will be an off-season program in the fall during 7th period for students not playing other sports. Final tryouts will be after winter break. You’re encouraged to play summer and winter ball with a travel team or a recreation league team. Swimming We offer a challenge to all levels of athletes while maintaining focus on academics. In 2016 Varsity Girls, 1 of 4 California schools and Varsity Boys, 1 of 2 California schools, received the Silver Team Scholar Award. 70% of the team received the Scholar Athlete award and the teams were Marmonte League Champions at the Varsity and JV levels. “My goal is to create a healthy environment that prompts developing positive self-esteem while maintaining a safe place to learn.” Our Summer program starts on July 9th & runs for 6 weeks. There will be an off-season swim class offered for Fall & Winter. Tryouts for this class are in August and space is limited. Team tryouts are in December. Please come in shape to swim 100 Freestyle (4 laps) for time. For more info, e-mail Coach Shannon Breese at [email protected]. Stunt STUNT, the new competitive team sport derived from cheerleading! STUNT removes the crowd-leading element and focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps and tumbling. A tryout meeting will take place in mid-November and tryouts will take place in December. Please contact Coach Keri Ponce at [email protected] with any questions. Tennis (Boys-Spring/Girls-Fall) Tennis offers two levels of competition, Varsity and Junior Varsity with Varsity carrying no more than 12 players and JV no more than 10. JV matches are doubles only. Girls Tennis is a fall sport (tryouts are usually in early August), and Boys Tennis is in the spring (tryouts in December). Participation in Tennis will count toward your PE credits. Practices are at WHS during 7th period. There is no Off-Season, so players are expected to train on their own by participating in tournaments, clinics, etc. For further information, please email Coach Scott Yasgoor at [email protected]. Track and Field Track and Field is a spring season sport that you can compete in for all of your four years in high school. Track and Field offers a variety of potentially new and different experiences as well as some you may have seen before. Event areas include Sprints, Distance, Hurdles, Horizontal Jumps, Vertical Jumps and Throws. Track and Field is not only a bunch of individual events as these events add up to score points for the team. An informational meeting will be held in December for interested athletes. Please contact Coach Matt McLaughlin at [email protected] with any questions. Volleyball/Boys Boys Volleyball is a spring sport with off-season offered in the fall and winter. All of which count as PE credit if needed. A summer “camp” program may be offered if there is enough interest. Students who want to play volleyball are encouraged to play with club teams in the area. For more information please contact Coach Eric Taylor at [email protected]. Volleyball/Girls Westlake Girls Volleyball is in the midst of a successful run at all 3 levels (Frosh/Soph, Junior Varsity, and Varsity). Indoor girls volleyball is a fall season sport, while beach volleyball competes in the spring season. Both indoor and beach teams have been league champs for the past 5 years in a row with Westlake Volleyball generally considered the best and most consistent high school program in Ventura County. Head Coach Ernest Rittenhouse is the winningest active coach for girls high school

volleyball. For 2018, the official tryout for the JV and Varsity fall indoor teams will be June 9th, 9am-12pm in the WHS gym. There is a Summer Camp that runs from July 16th to July 20th, 2018. Players (including incoming freshmen) are grouped by skill level. It is a great introduction to high school athletics. Although it is not the official tryout for freshman, players gain an advantage by their experience at the Summer Camp (run by the high school coaches). The actual Frosh tryout will take place on Saturday, July 21, 9am-12pm in the Westlake gym. The remaining weeks of the summer have summer leagues for the various levels (F/S, JV and Varsity). Calendars for the upcoming schedule and registration forms are available. We also have Beach/Sand Volleyball as an official school sport in the spring. Tryout dates in December will depend on the weather. Check for updates on the school website as we get closer to the school year or you can e-mail any questions to Coach Ernest Rittenhouse at [email protected] Water Polo (Boys-Fall/Girls-Winter) Our Water Polo programs are very successful and a great way to be involved on a WHS team! We are growing, but we are always in need of new players. No previous play experience is necessary. We have three teams to accommodate all levels of play, Frosh/Soph, JV and Varsity teams. The program runs year round even through the “off-season” period and therefore it too is counted as a PE credit! Practices are held before, during or after school depending on the time of year. There will be a summer program for new and returning boys’ and girls’ water polo players starting Monday, June 25th. All practices will be held at WHS. We will enter summer leagues and scrimmages for an encouraging & exciting summer! For more information including practice times, sign-up dates and other information, please visit our water polo website at westlakeathletics.com. For further information don’t hesitate to e-mail Coach Mike Arteaga at [email protected]. Wrestling Those interested in joining the team can try out in September for winter wrestling season. After the wrestling season, 7th period class picks up again through the spring. All are welcome. We have information available for summer training camps and tournaments. You can contact Coach Phil Nazario at [email protected] or 805-320-7066.
