ST. GEORGE VILLAGE Created a Pancake Breakfast for the Care Partners

A great big shout out to Chef Adrian and Suzanne Brown (HR Manager)

who helped with the Care Partner pancake breakfast! They set up shop in the Springs activity room and the aroma of pancakes drifted into the neighborhood. Resident Bobbie Woolridge, came around the corner and decided to take a seat adjacent to where we cooked. She never left! She was so thrilled with the food and the comradery. It was a joy to see how much joy she was having! They ended up delivering pancakes to many other Springs residents in the dining room. This super successful event had a great deal of meaning for the residents served and for everyone at ST. GEORGE VILLAGE.

THE CHAPLAIN CORNERBy Chaplain Susan Amick at Wesley Woods Towers

Each New Year brings new possibilities, along with baggage and belongings from the past. Last year, our Spirituality and Aging Book Group read Lighter as We Go, by Mindy Greenstein and Jimmie Holland. We discussed the things that can sometimes become barriers to enjoying every-day life. These things included strained relationships, time spent worrying about things that we can’t control, and our relationship to our stuff. As we enter 2019, we found synergy in the ideas of freeing ourselves from our belongings and making resident homes safer by reducing, reusing and recycling stuff.

We scheduled 3 specific Clear Your Clutter Days to assist residents in removing unneeded items from their apartments. These included books (which were first reviewed by

our library team, before donating them to DeKalb Library), maga-zines (which were reused and recycled), newspapers and junk mail, and small household items (which were donated). Not only were flyers posted throughout the building, the Chaplain also talked about this idea of clearing unnecessary clutter from our hearts, and minds, and homes in worship, small discussion groups, and resident association meetings.

We acknowledged the hard emo-tional work that it sometimes takes to make changes in our habits, and encouraged residents to cherish the relationships that our belong-ings often signify, while letting go of the belongings themselves. This quote from Peter Walsh (of TV

show Clean Sweep) was helpful, “What I know for sure is that when you declutter- whether it’s in your home, your head, or your heart- it is astounding what will flow into that space that will enrich you, your life and your family.” We took the bold step and began the process of making room for new possibilities!

Ultimately, staff members provided donated Kroger bags to each resident, with a reminder of how and where to donate/recycle their items. In total, 15 Bags of Books, 4 Large Recycling Bins of Paper and 16 Large Plastic Tubs of Household Items and Clothing were removed from WESLEY WOODS TOWERS on behalf of residents. Even former members of the “Green Team” applauded our efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle, as they watched carloads of clutter leave the community. We highly recommend this thoughtful process of clearing clutter and opening to new possibilities!
