By AMANDA ROGERS Canyon News staff Nearly 700 third graders on eight campuses in Can- yon Independent School District will receive the gift of words in the form of age- appropriate dictionaries. The Canyon Rotary Club will provide the reference books through sponsor- ships, fund-raising activities and a grant from Rotary District 5730. Every third grader in the district will re- ceive a dictionary to keep as his or her own. The project is part of the Rotary Club’s outreach program and reflects the organization’s focus on literacy education for all. “It’s for the kids, and they just love to have their own book. We encourage the kids to write letters to the sponsors, and that’s nice because we couldn’t do it without them,” said Don Johnston, Canyon Rotary Club member and project coordinator. Keith Brown, a past president of Canyon Rotary Club, said the local project started four years ago and is based on a national pro- gram. The 2007 project pro- vided dictionaries for third graders at Reeves-Hinger and Crestview elementary schools. Three years ago the program was expanded to also cover Lakeview and Sundown Lane elementary schools. Last year was the first time every elementary school in the district was part of the program. The Rotary Club’s dis- trict foundation also gives a $500 matching grant to help with the cost of the books. It seems once they find out about the program, they really stand behind it and help out a ton. We went from starting at one school to not even a full year later serving five schools,” Brown said. “We hope to serve all elemen- tary schools by the end of the year. We then want to look at expanding to inter- mediate and junior high schools.” “I am announcing this will be my final term as a Randall County Commis- sioner,” said Randall county commissioner Skip Huskey in a Monday morning press release. “As a Commis- sioner, I am always asked ‘what accomplishments are you most proud of?’ “Randall Coun- ty has volunteer programs in the Jail and Juvenile Centers. Many of the volunteers are in the jail minis- tries. One would be hard pressed to find one Christian organization not represented in the jail and juvenile centers. There are over 90 volunteers from 23 churches in the adult jail alone. They provide daily Bible study and provide Narcot- ics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous volunteers. These programs reduce sui- cides, depression and anger among inmates. The wonder of those who give of their time to visit our jails and tell these young men and women there is love and forgiveness is something we should all be proud of.” Huskey will have served 24 years as a county com- missioner when his term expires at the end of 2012. INSPIRATION IS A truth that often repeats its message to us in various ways throughout our life.

This week, I was inspired with a message about volun-teering.

It is my belief that the primary reason we exist is to make the journey of life easier for mankind. It is important to share burdens as well as joy; to comfort one another in times of grief and heartache as well as celebrating the successes.

Following that thought, I submit that my mission in life is the same as yours. We are all a part of man-kind, created to benefit one another.

The message I heard on volunteering did not come from the United Way Vic-tory Lunch I attended ear-lier in the month. It came from a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters. The gentleman speaking was also a full-time employee of a local bank, a full-time student at West Texas A&M University, a husband and father of two children. He serves in other ways in our community as well, but it was his personal testimony about his time with his Little Brother that touched my heart.

Miss Buck

Funeral services for Lauren Michelle Buck, 12, of Amarillo, were held Wednesday in Calvary Bap-tist Church, 800 8th St., in Canyon with David Crump officiating. Burial was in Dreamland Cemetery with arrangements by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Miss Buck died Nov. 25, 2011.

Lauren was born to Mi-chelle and Christopher Buck on Oct. 17, 1999, in Ama-rillo. She was a bright blue-eyed girl with long blonde hair and an infectious laugh. She loved everyone

she met and although she faced many difficulties in life, she seldom complained about her limitations. She got so excited when her bus showed up to take her to one of her favorite places, school. Eventually, her new favorite place became Camp Summit, where no one was looked at differently. She enjoyed VBS, playing with her Wii, singing, dancing in circles in her wheelchair and often raced her brother and sister on their bikes. She enjoyed building and painting wooden projects with her daddy and helping her mom put away her own laundry and dishes. She em-braced everything life had to offer and she will be missed

by many. Lauren believed she could, so she did. The family said they were given an angel, the form they may not understand. They also

said that this little girl with eyes of blue has taught them more than they ever knew.

Survivors include her parents, Chris and Michelle Buck, two brothers, Chris-tian Buck and Cameron Buck and a sister, Teagan Buck, all of Amarillo; her grandfather, Everett Hen-dricks; her grandmothers, Jenny Hendricks of Canyon and Leslie Harlan of Ama-rillo; and her grandparents, Carl and Brenda Buck of Canyon.

The family suggests me-morials to Camp Summit, 17210 Campbell Rd., #180, Dallas, TX 75252-4203.

Online condolences may be made at www.boxwell-brothers.com.

Joy CaseFuneral services for

Joy L. Case, 68, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Brooks Chapel with Shane Nease, pastor of Living Water Christian Fellowship Church, officiating. A visita-tion will be held from 6-8 tonight at Brooks Chapel. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery with arrange-ments by Brooks Funeral Directors.

She felt personally responsible to help each and every inmate she came across in the best way she could. After retirement, Joy cherished spending time with friends and family, and feeding and watching wild birds in her backyard. She would spend every morning with a cup of

coffee and the birds, which brought peace to her life. Joy supported and took care of her husband, son, and every other family member with great pleasure because that is what she loved to do. Joy respected God, life and country. She knew no strangers and wished no harm upon anyone. She will be greatly missed.

Asked about her favor-ite, she said, “I think I’m going to lean more on the basketball players. They’re a lot more fun. The guys, when they lose, are a lot more silent. I’m not really liking that.”

She went on to talk about her efforts with the Lady Eagles basketball team. “I love working with basketball girls because they make you feel so welcome, and there’s never a dull moment with them. Not only are they a great team on court, but they are great individuals outside basketball.”

While her athletic training duties are important to her, Alyzza has other interests as

well. “I’m in student council and Leo Club,” she said.

And outside of school, she said of time with her friends, “We go to the movies. Usually we’re here in basketball. We support the girls and go to a lot of school activities. Volley-ball’s really not my training spot, but I help out a little bit.”

While confessing, “I don’t like reading,” she went on to add, “I read every now and then. I read the Twilight series.”

Alyzza listed her favorite subject as history. “This year it’s kind of boring, but it’s always been interesting and easy for me to do. It’s easy to learn and remem-ber.” But her favorite teach-er is Mrs. Tipton. “She’s my

math teacher,” Alyzza said. “She’s a lot of fun.”

Family time is also an im-portant part of Alyzza’s life. “We usually, Sunday nights, as a family play Wii. We go to church together. Usually when we leave we’re all together. Like celebrations, we’re always together.”

And leaving all together implies a large vehicle. “Yes, this huge white van,” Alyzza said, laughing. “It’s like this 12-seater huge white van. I’ve driven it once, but it was really hard, so I was like ‘This is not happening again.’”

Asked to compare this year’s Lady Eagle basketball team with last year, Alyzza said, “Very different. Last year I think the games were over after halftime; we’re in

As he went on to discuss his pride in the changes that have occurred during his time as a commission-er, he said, “I’m a big be-liever in the rule of three. Nobody does anything on their own. When somebody jumps out and takes credit, it’s inappropriate.”

His satisfaction with the Juvenile Center was readily apparent as his press re-lease said of it, “The Youth Center of the High Plains philosophy is

• All individuals have intrinsic value or worth.

• All individuals should be held accountable for their behaviors.

• All individuals have the capacity to change.

• We are an essential part of the change process.

“The Juvenile Center has notable volunteers from the Crisis Pregnancy Center, Care Net, Walk to Ameaus, ‘Torch,’ and a program to educate these young people about substance abuse. With this philosophy and these volunteers, it is no won-der we are recognized as an example for the entire country.”

While his press release purposely omitted refer-ence to the 1909 Randall County Courthouse, Huskey noted, “I started work on the courthouse in 1984, before I took office in 1989.” Then he mod-estly added, “All I did was keep them from tearing it down.”

Huskey did acknowledge the changes in the politi-cal climate over the past quarter-century. “25 years

ago Randall County was a county in disarray. Our facilities were inadequate and they were unkept. Pub-lic statements were made referring to the county as the laughing stock of the state.

“Leadership, however, has prevailed. In my opin-ion it began with Judge Mac McMennamy, who led us through the controversy of the Youth Center of the High Plains Juvenile Cen-ter completed in 1993.

“The jail was the next controversy. It was controversial because the cost estimate presented by the architects and voted on was about 65 percent of the final cost. There was also controversy over the location; however, the entire court agreed on the need for the facility to be efficient to save on future

Each dictionary features a label for children to write their names, making the gift theirs.

“You can tell it really means a lot to them. It’s theirs that they can put their name in and say, ‘This is mine.’ Hopefully at some point they’ll run across that dictionary, maybe when

husband worked at Tyson where she worked at night and her husband during the day. Her death made life too difficult for John. He came home from school and had to take care of his little sis-ter, feeding her, bathing her and getting her to bed. John attempted suicide at the ripe old age of 10.

There was an immediate connection with Bill and John. Bill could feel his pain because he remem-bered his own pain from that age. He had commit-ted to spend 30 minutes a week with John but that time quadrupled very soon. He is able to share a pain with John that few of us

they graduate from high school, they’ll realize some-one cared enough about their education to give them that,” Brown said.

Expanding the program was essential to help more children, Johnston said.

“It’s fun to watch those kids’ faces light up. They really get excited about it, and a lot of them will have that book for the rest of their lives. I just think it’s a heck

labor costs, and we needed a location where we were not land-locked.

“Judge Houdashell was the next leader who, among other things, led us to take an old Wal-Mart building and turn it into a courts facility. Some make fun of the new courts facil-ity by calling it Law-Mart, but we saved the taxpayers a bundle of money. The need for a modern courts facility in Randall County had existed for a quarter of a century. And maybe with a little providence, Randall County turned a potential blight on the community into a courts building that complements West Texas A&M University.

“Anyone can look at any one part of the last 25 years and point to items they disagree with, but through all the controversy

a 50-point lead. Now it’s like the girls are a little differ-ent without ‘Cole’ (Nicole Hampton), but they’re still a good team. It’s fun having them around.”

Alyzza acknowledged the help and training she receives from CHS athletic trainer Todd Bowman. “At the very beginning of the year, he tells you what to do. As the year goes on you just kind’a know what to do. You go out at timeouts, get water ready, get towels ready, all that stuff.”

The tangible reward for the work and busy schedule is, “We get a jacket for train-ing. You get it for staying for two years. You get a letter with a training symbol on it.”

While she still has another year of high school,

Alyzza is already planning ahead. “I’m still thinking about nursing,” she said. “If I’m going to do nursing, I want to go full-out nursing so I don’t get busy and not have time to have fun.”

With a brother at WT, that is one option that Alyzza is considering. “My parents want me to go to WT since it’s closer and they do have a good program there. Also AC has a great medical program as well. But freshman year I was thinking of TCU or UT. Those are actually my first two choices.”

With a family back-ground and a person interest in the medical field, Alyzza is getting great expe-rience while having fun with her friends and family.

could, making it possible for him to minister to John in a unique way.

At the same time, it is evident that John ministers to Bill in the same way. They comfort one another on the level of 10-year old boys.

It’s amazing to see. That observation is the inspir-

ing point to me. How often could we all see inspiration in the world if we looked for it. Could we also see ways we could serve mankind if we weren’t so busy with our own agenda – our jobs, our families, our education or our hobbies?

Bill did and he inspires me to do likewise.

Teachers are trained in specific characteristics or behaviors that may be indicators of malnutri-tion or insufficient food. Among the questions asked are “Do they - rush food lines? – have extreme hun-ger on Monday morning? – eat all their food? – ask for seconds? – eat oth-ers’ food? Do they exhibit puffy or swollen skin or have chronically dry and cracked lips or itchy eyes? Are they hyperactive, irri-table, withdrawn or aggres-sive? Are they extremely thin or obese?”

These are just a few of the early warning signs that teachers are asked to watch for in their students.

Snack Pak 4 Kids is a weekend backpack pro-

gram that began serving 10 children at Will Rogers Elementary on Labor Day weekend September 2010. The program was started by a Bushland couple who discovered Amarillo was the largest city west of Dallas without a weekend backpack program. The program has grown to serve more than 1,000 students in the four school districts of Amarillo, Can-yon, Hereford and Bush-land. Volunteers pack 10-12 nutritious snacks in plastic bags, deliver them to the school and place them in backpacks to be discreetly sent home each Friday. The targeted students are those who live in food-insecure homes as identified by the school staff.

“We did send out some surveys with the teachers and asked them how they

thought the Snack Pack was working. They saw attendance was up and the students had better concen-tration in the classroom. Their behaviors weren’t as crazy. If you’re on an empty stomach, all you can think about is the next meal. The kids couldn’t wait to get their backpack and would ask counselors when they would receive it,” said Sydney Stephen-son, a local volunteer.

Local businesses and organizations help provide food for the programs, as well. Happy State Bank conducted a Pop-Tart drive for the program in October. The 11 offices in Canyon, Amarillo and Hereford collected more than 37,000 Pop-Tarts or about 6,100 boxes. While much food is purchased from a food bank, the program is un-

able to get Pop-tarts and peanut butter.

“We have a responsibil-ity to help ensure children do not go hungry in the communities we serve,” said Cari Roach, marketing director of Happy State Bank. “We will continue to do our part to alleviate hunger.”

First Christian Church is wrapping up a Vienna sausage drive today, with every one can donated being matched with three more by the church elders.

“In my opinion if there is one kid who needed food, that’s a great need. To know there are 75 kids in just one school in our town – that breaks my heart,” said volunteer Meg Brown. “As long as there are kids who need something to eat, we need to feed them. Being an

elementary student or younger, they have no control over their situation – it’s not their fault. Our goal is to find the need and try to raise the money to provide for that need.

“I think one of the big things in this town is that you kind of feel like we’re in a secluded area and don’t have problems like home-lessness or hunger. When you dig into it, it’s amazing what you will find as far as needs in our community. In our small town we have needs that need to be met.”

A fundraiser dance and dinner will be held in February. The Canyon pro-gram is currently in need of 100 percent juice boxes and peanut butter crackers. Donations can be dropped off at Rustic Gypsy, which is located in the Court-house Square.

For more information about Snack Pak4Kids or to make a donation, send e-mail to [email protected] or mail to PO Box 526, Canyon, TX 79015.

of a project for kids and helps them get a head start,” he said. “It’s just fun for me to deliver the dictionaries and see the excitement, and it’s just a good way to help the community.”

Brown said that Rotary International has set a focus on literacy and, while the Canyon club has always worked on education proj-ects through scholarships and other endeavors, the

dictionary program only strengthens that focus.

“From a personal stand-point, education is one of the most important things we can support. I think you have to start early emphasizing the importance of educa-tion,” he said. “I think when students see it’s coming from someone in the community, it reinforces what their teach-ers are saying.”

Club members work to

get sponsorships and then deliver the dictionaries to students.

Butler Cain, current Rotary president, said that the project is a club effort to impact the community.

“We don’t make money on this, because that’s not the point. It’s a public service campaign. We can’t give a dictionary to every student, but our club thought that the third grade level was a

really good place to do that. I’m just pleased we can give one to every third grader and third grade teacher,” he said. “I think this program is great to have the books in the students’ hands, and they can use them in class. I know we have a lot of digital technology we can use now, but having a book in front of them and turn through the pages is such a good experi-ence.”

Randall County has gone from being the laughing stock of the state, with a reputation reflected in its facilities, to a county that the taxpayers can be proud of; and we have provided these facilities and still managed to maintain one of the lowest county tax rates in the state.”

Huskey said that he plans to concentrate on his work next. “My job is growing here (at People’s

Federal Credit Union). I’m still going to be ac-tive.”

He hinted at future political plans, saying, “In local politics you can’t hold an office and run for another office.”

With the opening of filing for a place on the primary ballot, only Bob Robinson has so far an-nounced his intention to run for the seat being vacated by Huskey.

Cradock said that he is working on alternate ar-rangements for gym space that can be used for intra-murals and students “just wanting to shoot baskets,” but it was too early to have all the details sorted out

so far. He said that details would be posted online at www.wtamu.edu/recsports as soon as they are final-ized.

In the meantime, plans are being developed for a temporary “fix” to prevent rain or other precipitation from entering the building until the permanent repairs can be made.

New water district irrigation rules prompts informational meeting

FARM & RANCH

By STEVE BYRNSTexas AgriLifeExtension Service

The Texas AgriLife Extension Service and Texas Farm Bureau will host an informational meeting at 5 p.m. Dec. 8 for those affected by the new High Plains Underground Water District rules that go into effect Jan. 1.

The meeting will be held at the Floyd County Friends Unity Center at Muncy, 5 miles north of Floydada on U.S. Highway 70.

“The High Plains Un-derground Water District adopted rules in July that will require meters for wells and will limit the amount

of water pumped per acre for irrigation,” said Mark Carroll, AgriLife Extension agent in Floyd County. “The whole purpose of this meeting is to help our producers and landowners better understand this new ruling and how it will affect them.

“AgriLife Extension and the Farm Bureau are provid-ing this opportunity strictly as an informational meeting for our producers. We are not for or against the new regulations, but simply want to provide the best information possible, so our clientele is informed as thor-oughly as possible prior to the regulations taking effect at the first of the year.”

Jim Conkwright, High Plains Underground Water District manager in Lub-bock, will present the pro-gram and answer questions from the audience, Carroll said.

The multi-county meeting will involve the AgriLife Extension offices in Floyd, Crosby, Briscoe, Swisher and Hale counties and the Farm Bureau office serving Floyd and Briscoe counties.

Individual registration is $10 due at the door. The Floydada fire department will be serving a barbecue meal as a fundraiser.

For more information contact the AgriLife Exten-sion office in Floyd County at 983-4912.

Drought will be the focus of the Cattle Trails Cow-Calf Conference, a joint effort between Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the Oklahoma Coop-erative Extension Service, to be held Jan. 6 in Wichita Falls.

This annual conference provides cow-calf produc-ers the most up-to-date information on topics that influence cattle profits, said Stan Bevers, AgriLife Extension economist in Vernon.

The slogan of the annual conference is “driving your cattle to profits,” and Bev-ers said this year’s drought made it tough to generate any profit.

“However, ranchers have been through droughts be-fore,” he said. “The differ-

ence now is the additional rising input costs and mar-ket volatility. Coming out of this drought will require a new level of understanding and pencil pushing.”

The conference, which alternates between Texas and Oklahoma each year, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Events Center, 1000 5th Street in Wichita Falls.

Registration is $25 per person and includes educa-tional materials, a copy of the conference proceedings, a noon meal and refresh-ments. Additional informa-tion can be obtained at http://agrisk.tamu.edu .

The keynote speaker for the event will be Bryan Rupp, KFDX TV 3 me-teorologist from Wichita Falls. Rupp will provide his forecast as well as what to expect from changing weather patterns in this area.

“While nobody knows what the 2012 weather will be, ranchers should start preparing their response to improving weather,” Bevers said.

Additional speakers include Extension fac-ulty from both Oklahoma and Texas. Topics to be discussed include drought-related effects on the area’s cow herd, reinvesting after the drought, the drought’s impact on natural resourc-es, and how herd dynamics can and should change. Industry sponsors also will have their products on display during the event.

Producers are encour-aged to preregister by contacting their local AgriLife Extension county agent, their Oklahoma Co-operative Extension county educator, or by contacting Karen Thompson at 940-552-9941, extension 217 or [email protected].

The traditional wassail bowl will open the festivities for West Texas A&M University’s 29th annual Renaissance Holiday Feast at 6:45 p.m. Friday in the Alumni Banquet Fa-cility. Ticket sales for the event have closed.

The annual feast celebrates the holiday season with the food, fashion and folly remi-

niscent of the renaissance years. Guests will gather for the traditional wassail bowl before sitting down for a 7 p.m. feast. Hosts for this year’s feast are J. Patrick O’Brien, WTAMU president, and Karen O’Brien.Servers, jest-ers and performers will be dressed in festive 16th century costume to reflect the renais-

sance theme with storytelling, Renaissance portraits, puppetry and juggling.

Special entertainment for the evening will provide sounds of the renaissance era with performances by the WTAMU Chamber Singers and the Matilda Gaume Early Music Consort.

The Renaissance Holiday Feast is spon-sored by the Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities and the CORE Center. Proceeds provide scholarships for students directly involved in helping with the dinner.

If you have yet to see the wedding between Edward and Bella in the latest Twilight offering, tonight is your last chance to see it at the Varsity. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I brings back Kristen Stew-art as Bella Swan, Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, and Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black. This fantasy wedding takes place in a fairy-tale forest setting with an enchanting bride dressed in a Carolina Herrera gown who marries her Prince Charming who just happens to be a vampire. The film is 117 minutes of intrigue and mystery and concludes with

a cliff-hanger of an ending, Breaking Dawn is rated PG-13 and runs 117 minutes—at least through tonight in Canyon.

After our own Thanks-giving dinner, we took our visiting grandchildren to see Arthur Christmas. Rated PG for some mild rude humor, this animated film features the voices of several well-known English actors including James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie (TV’s House), Bill Nighy, and Jim Broad-bent. The story line features several members of the Claus family including Santa and Mrs. Claus, Grandfather Claus (a retired Santa), and

sons Steve and Arthur who are being groomed to take over the family business. Steve has developed an auto-mated system for world-wide, on-time package delivery on Christmas Eve, and Arthur is in charge of answering all those letters to Santa, assur-ing each child that Santa is real. The drama arises when an undelivered present is found, and a discovery is made that a child has been missed. This is a terrific holiday film that may very well become a Christmas classic. The adults in our party enjoyed it as much as the children. The film has a runtime of 97 minutes and is

showing locally.Another very funny,

light-hearted holiday offer-ing, Jack and Jill, will open tomorrow, at the Varsity. Most of the national critics rate films on a scale from 0-100, and you might as well know that three of the na-tional critics rated this film a zero, but they’re wrong. I can assure you of this because I’m not particularly fond of Adam Sandler’s films as I don’t find “bathroom” jokes to be funny. However, this film is family friendly and genuinely comical, even with a bit of scatological humor. The audience with whom I saw the film laughed

With the Remnant Trust winding down and prepar-ing to leave West Texas A&M University in early December, I would like to remind everyone that it is still available for viewing at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum archives. Just contact Warren Stricker to set up an appointment to view the documents, they won’t be here for too much longer so don’t miss this opportunity.

This week in the Rem-nant Trust series we take a look at the work that created the modern discipline of po-litical science, The Prince.

The Prince was first writ-ten by Niccolo Machiavelli in 1513. It was to be pre-sented to Lorenzo Medici, the new ruler of the Italian City-State of Florence. The book was intended as a gift to the new ruler in exchange for a post in the Florentine government, and a grant to re-enter the city from exile.

Though Machiavelli’s gift was rejected if even read at all, his work did not go unnoticed. The Prince is a

required reading for leaders globally, in fact anyone who plans to go into government or politics. It is a work of incredible bluntness and is not in any way flamboy-ant, but gives the reader simple, short, and detailed guidelines on how to be an effective leader.

Is it better to be loved or feared? “It would be desir-able to be both… but as it is difficult to be both at the same time, it is much more safe to be feared than to be loved, when you have to choose between the two.”

The Prince is a book of morals, but not in the tradi-tional sense. While a leader should seek to “be good” and loved by all, Machiavelli understands that it is not possible to please everyone. Therefore, the leader should make decisions for what is best for their nation. This may mean making someone, somewhere, at some time mad. In that case, as the quote implies it is better to be feared so that said person will not be likely to threaten your power.

This is the quality that makes The Prince unique. It takes into consideration human nature. Rather than giving the reader obscure definitions of leadership, Machiavelli is concrete in his writing, providing real world examples for every point that he makes (though it might help to brush up on your Medieval history).

The Remnant Trust’s 1640 edition of The Prince is very typical. The book is rather small, easily fitting into a pocket or saddle bag. Yet it is leather bound with golden scrawl, and very well kept. This is because the book is as much a symbol of leadership as the person who owns it. Coincidently, this book was published for nobility in England, specifically for the Duke of Lenox. This accounts for the leather-binding and the gold, nobility wants a book that shows status as much as power in the literature that they read.

Holding this little book today, it is hard to imagine that it is still read in colle-

giate and intellectual circles and continues to be debated. Furthermore, this little book has been reproduced numerous times and in sizes that fit inside a briefcase or pocket.

As in its own time, The Prince is still a symbol of power and status, and one would be hard pressed to find a leader, especially in the United States, who has not read its contents.

Ross Wilson is a junior history major and designated Remnant Trust Columnist.

Twilight transitions to Jack and Jill at Varsity

Let’s go to the movies

‘The Prince’ is Machiavallian

throughout the showing and applauded at the end. Sometimes it’s fun to see a movie that’s just entertain-ing, and this one is. The film stars Adam Sandler as both Jack and Jill Sadelstein along with Katie Holmes as Jack’s wife, Erin Sadelstein, and Elodie Tougne and Rohan Chand as their children Sofia and Gary. Al Pacino plays himself and garners several laughs poking fun at his own Hollywood image. The storyline begins at

Thanksgiving with the yearly visit of Jill who prolongs her visit with Jack and family through Hanukkah, much to Jack’s displeasure. The plot explores the complexities of family dynamics and sibling rivalry amid much silliness. Rated PG for crude material including suggestive referenc-es, language, comic violence, and brief smoking, the film has a 91 minute runtime and will be showing at the Varsity through Dec. 8. See you at the movies!

The Computer Hacker

Live CDs

Lee Crites is a Canyon resident and a senior computerand business consultant

Okay, so just what in the sam hill is a “live” CD? No, kiddies, it’s not a zombie. It is a computer CD that is formatted to be bootable, and contains a live, work-ing, version of an operating system. When a user boots their computer “to” the CD, it will “come up” in whatever operating system it was built for, in a work-ing environment, so one can take it for a trial run on their computer.

Due to the strict licens-ing surrounding the various Microsoft and Apple operat-ing systems, they are not a legitimate target operating system. Since I am not normally interested in either of those flavors of operating systems, this is not an issue for me.

So most Live CDs are based on some flavor of a free version of the Unix® operating system. (Note: To the “free operating system folks,” the registered trade-mark name, Unix®, when they are talking about “any and all variants based on it,” is written thus: *nix. This means, roughly speaking, “anything that is unix-ish, and free, and I don’t have to worry about trademark issues.”)

So what are they good for? When one of my clients calls and tells me their computer has crashed or

is infected or whatever, my first reaction is to reach for my Live CDs. I have several.

The most wonderful part about all of them is the default assumption that they are being used on a host computer that has one of the Microsoft Windows® based operating systems on it. (Note: To hackers like me, when we speak of this whole family of operating systems, it is not unusual to write them as “windoze.” Perhaps I’ll dedicate an article to why one day.)

Since that is the default, every one of them I have tested has booted up giving full access to all of the files on the host computer hard drive. Some even go further and pull in user details from the windoze system so they can come as close as possible to giving a familiar “look and feel” experience.

This shows the first use for a Live CD. One can ac-cess, back up, and poten-tially recover/repair files on the windoze computer. Since none of the viruses that effect windoze under-stand *nix, it is safe to hack about an infected system via a Live CD.

I can, thanks to the plethora of utilities avail-able on many *nix systems, determine if the reason the computer is down is because of some hardware

failure, check the registry to see if it is corrupted, and, if an Internet connection is available, download the latest virus definitions and run a complete virus and malware scan.

Many come with pro-grams such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice (the same basic Microsoft Office® replacement) already in-stalled. A friend whose sys-tem died as he was finishing his research paper used a Live CD to access the files on his computer, complete the research paper, print it out, and then email it to his professor. The initial reason for most Live CDs is to allow the user to try out the new operating system without making changes to their computer. Most have an “install me” option that allows the user to install that flavor of *nix on the PC, beside, as well, or instead of, the windoze system already there.

With the power available to users, Live CDs help many of us keep our com-puters working, and when they don’t, help us figure out why, and, hopefully, to fix them.

WTAMUPage 12 Thursday, December 1, 2011 THE CANYON NEWS

The West Texas A&M University horse judging team earned 3,296 points to win the American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Nov. 16 in Oklahoma City.

WTAMU took first overall in both performance and reasons and eighth in halter to take the win. Key-lee Sayler, a junior equine business major from Casper, Wyo., placed fifth overall with a first-place finish in performance and second in reasons. Teammate Lauren Cook, a junior equine busi-ness major from Fishers, Ind., placed fourth in per-formance and eighth in rea-sons, and Chelsie Milam, a sophomore equine business major from Burleson, took fifth place in halter. Kelsey Kenson, a junior agricultural media and communication major from Prescott, Ariz., finished sixth in perfor-

mance, and Addie Davis, a junior agricultural media and communication major, placed eighth in perfor-mance.

Following WTAMU in overall rankings was the University of Wyoming, second overall with 3,295 points, followed by Kansas State University at third, Texas A&M University in fourth and Oklahoma State University at fifth. A total of 63 contestants representing 20 teams competed at the event.

“Winning a World Championship is always an incredible achievement,” John Pipkin, professor of animal science and coach of the horse judging team, said. “This was truly a total team success. Winning it along with the All-American Quarter Horse Congress Championship a few weeks ago puts these students in an

elite group in winning both a National and World Cham-pionship the same year.

“This is an exceptionally talented, committed, hard-working group of students that has maintained a fantastically positive, can-do, selfless, team-focused attitude all fall. While they are excited—and I am so proud of their accomplish-ments so far—they are not done yet. I am confident they are going to catch their breath and focus on working hard to achieve a rare “triple crown” by winning the NRHA Championship in two weeks.”

The WTAMU team travels to Oklahoma City in December to defend its national title at the National Reining Horse Association National Championship—a title the team has won 10 times out of the past 11 years.

Ensuring student success was a key factor in making a number of changes in the nursing program at West Texas A&M University, and a recent NCLEX report reveals that those measures are definitely working.

In October the Texas Board of Nursing voted to elevate WTAMU’s bac-calaureate degree nursing education program from its conditional status to full approval based on a 95.18 percent first-time pass rate on the NCLEX.

The students not only improved the first-time pass rate, but a NCLEX pro-gram report for April 2011 through September 2011 shows that the program ranked at the very top on the percentage of graduates passing when compared to the 90 programs in the state of Texas.

At the national level, the WTAMU program was one of 51 baccalaureate nursing programs out of 658 to rank at the top of national pass-

ing percentages.When compared to all

the 1,752 other nursing pro-grams (BSN, Associate and Diploma) across the nation, WTAMU was one of 133 to earn a number one ranking.

“No one did better than us in that six-month period,” Dr. Helen Reyes, head of the Department of Nursing, said, “and the year’s pass rate earned our program full approval with commendation from the Texas Board of Nursing.”

NCLEX is required by all 50 states for nursing students seeking licensure as a registered nurse and measures the knowledge required to perform nursing duties safely and effectively. It is a computer adaptive test in which the number of questions vary from 75 to 265 items.

“The report showed that our graduates improved in every category,” Reyes said.

“We showed improved performance and ranked above the mean in areas

like cardiovascular, immune system and childhood/adolscence.

“The report also is help-ful in telling us what areas our graduates are weakest so we know what to work on for future cohorts.”

The WTAMU Depart-ment of Nursing addressed the need to ensure student success in the classroom and on the NCLEX by insti-tuting a number of changes in the program. Those changes include:

• An increase in admis-sion requirements;

• Changing the program from six semesters to four;

• Requiring students pass an exit examination prior to graduation;

• Offering a tutoring program to all students;

• Providing a faculty mentoring program;

• Assisting students who may experience test anxiety; and

• Adding four more terminal faculty to the program.

The students competed in 14 different competitions and had 30 students on seven teams advance to the area round of competition held at West Texas A&M University on Nov. 19. With four events remaining in the spring, Canyon FFA’s domi-nating performance has already clinched the District Sweepstakes for the Chap-ter. The top two teams in each event advanced to the Area round. FFA competi-

tions are not divided into classification, so students competed against schools from class 1A to 5A. The CHS FFA chapter went on to win the area champion-ship in Agriculture Issues. The team, consisting of Landry Kieth, Darby Sulli-van, Collin Backus, Andrew Roder, Hannah Seiver, Tyler Mogford and Kevin Ruiz, left Wednesday for the state competition in Huntsville that runs through Saturday.

On the way, the team planned to stop in Austin and make their presenta-

tion to the Texas Nursery Landscape Association, the Texas Department of Ag-riculture and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s Office.

articles in the paper. A few of the accomplish-

ments of PTA in the past are hot school lunches, kids are not cargo and tax-free school supply days. The Council Care project can use mittens, hats and blan-kets, gently used to give to students.

These may be brought to

the building at the south-west corner of the Canyon Intermediate School. All donations are greatly ap-preciated.

The next meeting will be at noon Monday. The board will meet at 11 a.m. and have a $5 gift exchange. Plan to have fun and lots of laughs.

The Canyon Junior High library system is online. The library program that Canyon Independent School District uses is called Destiny Library System. When students visit the CJHS webpage, go to the Library tab across the top of the page.

Librarian, Anita Adair, has created multiple pages for student use. One of those pages is called Destiny Library System.

When students click on “Destiny Library System,” they will have access to the card catalog. Students can look for books in the library or check their personal records. However, students must log in with their username and password to check their personal records. When students are logged in, they can check to see when their books are due, reserve books by plac-ing them on hold, or check for fines they have accrued. The CJHS library also has numerous eBooks to read online.
