South Africa has a vibrant film and television industry that is growing in reputation and is competitive internationally. Local and foreign filmmakers are taking advantage of the country’s diverse, unique locations, as well as low production costs and favourable exchange rate, which makes it more affordable to make a movie or shoot a TV show here than in Europe or the US.

South African films and television productions have attained substantial global recognition including an Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2006 for Tsotsi, Oscar-nominated films like Yesterday, and U-Carmen eKhayalitsha, a Xhosa-language film which won the Golden Bear award at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival. Documentary film A Lion’s Tale won a non-fiction Emmy in 2006, recognised for its “most outstanding cultural and artistic programming”. South Africa’s documentary and factual films continue to be selected for screening and receive recognition at international festivals including IDFA and HotDocs.

Building on South Africa’s reputation for quality and creative film making, a string of successful big budget international productions have been filmed here, including District 9, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture; Fury Road, the fourth Mad Max film; Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio; and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus.

Opportunities abound, with the makers of movies, television, commercial and other productions being attracted by South Africa’s highly skilled film crews and technicians, excellent technical capacity and infrastructure, good weather and an incredible and stable film and TV production incentive that ranges from 20% to 50% depending on the kind of production and nature of ownership.

N ursing is an essential service, and yet there is currently a shortage of nurses world wide. This is because less people aspire to take

on nursing as a career, and from as far back as the 1960’s, rich countries have been poaching nurses from developing countries. If this is not changed soon, this will lead to a crisis where nursing will become available only to those who can afford it. This story will be told in tracking the history of black nurses in South Africa, whose services are in much demand around the world.

A fantasy meets docudrama film that takes place through the lives and lens’s of four culturally and racially diverse gay, South African characters,

who agree on one thing: they are judged by a moralistic and heteronormative society. As a result, to varying degrees, they have been alienated from where they come from. They team up on a bold, intimate, quirky, and intriguing journey to understand, challenge, redefine and strip away the layers of dominant cultural conditioning they believe divides and segregates us. In so doing, they unveil the vast and complicated cultural landscapes that have labelled them cultureless.

Social and political changes in recent years have changed power relationships. A man who gained a position of power (possibly

after decades of discrimination) is trying to prove his superiority to women by harassing a vulnerable subordinate. This man even regards it as a “fringe benefit” to which his position, his power and sex entitle him. In tough times of uncertainty, fear, limited promotion opportunities, retrenchments, personal and family stress and pressure on performance, there is a real danger that sexual harassment and trading of sexual favours will form part of the power games played. This short film is meant to highlight the “power game” type of sexual harassment at workplace. The series highlights the behaviour and self-centeredness of a sexual harasser, who is a manager but takes advantage of a young woman who is the head of her
