Adult Education

Dear Colleagues, The Adult Training and Development Network is a State of CT, Bureau of Health and Nutrition, Family Services and Adult Education funded program offering professional development opportunities for teachers, counselors and administrators in Adult Education. These workshops are free of charge to educators in those program areas. A wide array of workshops are scheduled which include Adult Education Professional Development Days scheduled throughout the year and throughout the state. There are also mini sessions designed to provide one-stopshopping for your professional development needs. Other workshops include topics in NEDP, Disability, GED, Technology, Teacher Evaluation, CCS training, ELL/ESL, College and Career Readiness training and so much more... Please take advantage of what we have to offer. We encourage you to look beyond the workshops and conferences you traditionally attend and review all of the offerings in this brochure. Interpreting CASAS Test Results & Reports: Module 4 - A. Robitaille This workshop is geared to classroom teachers who want to better understand how a variety of standards are tied to test items, and the large array of CASAS test reports which are available to help you better tailor instruction to maximize student learning, resulting in greater gains.

Financial Literacy-Liberty Bank /Rosa Carrero Liberty Bank feels “We don’t just live and work here. Liberty Bank is deeply invested in our community, and we believe that our purpose as a local bank is to enhance the well-being of the towns and cities we serve.” The presenter, Rosa Carerro is an AVP Community Outreach Officer, and will explain some of the services Liberty Bank can offer local Adult Education programs, i.e. understanding credit and basic financial literacy and money management. Rosa Carrero has presented workshops for low to moderate income Adult Ed families.This workshop is appropriate for any Adult Education teacher, Administrator or Support staff.

CCRS ELA 201* (Part II) Resource Alignment - A. Halloran During our session, we will build our capacity to evaluate the degree of alignment of instructional materials to the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) in ELA, a resource currently in use in participants’ program. After determining alignment of the resource, we will renovate a lesson from the resource to improve its quality. Please bring a resource currently in use in your program and a laptop with Wi-Fi capability. Completion Task: A lesson renovation. *Both sessions must be attended today for CCRS ELA 201 completion (continued from above)*The CCRS ELA 201 or 202 workshops do not have to be taken sequentially.

Using TOPSpro Reports -Mary Segarra This TOPSpro workshop will review the different reports and how to access them. The presenter will discuss the benefits of utilizing TOPSpro reports in your program.

NEDP Evaluation Workshop- A. Robitaille The NEDP Evaluation Workshop is the final step in full NEDP Advisor/Assessor training and is open ONLY to those NEDP staff who have completed their first full NEDP portfolio within the past year, and who have been invited by the NEDP training staff. Attendees will demonstrate all phases of NEDP, including intake, first appointment best practices and item evaluation.

CCRS ELA 201* (Part I) Resource Alignment - A. Halloran Learning how to evaluate resources builds capacity in instructors to align their teaching to CCR standards. Participants should:a. Have received a certificate of completion for CCRS ELA 101 and 102b. Will utilize the tools provided in this session to work with other staff members in resource alignment and lesson renovationc. Will facilitate the identification of aligned resources (i.e., a resource library, a list of evaluated resources)d. Will bring a resource (currently in use in the program) to practice alignment protocol and bring a laptop with Wi-Fi capability*Both sessions must be attended today for CCRS ELA 201 completion *The CCRS ELA 201 or 202 workshops do not have to be taken sequentially.

Using Smartphones in the Classroom -A. Robitaille Adult learners carry technology with them in their pockets. Embrace the ready availability and the comfort level students already have with mobile devices to enhance classroom communica-tion and conversation.

Participants should bring their own Smart Phones.

CCRS ELA 101-A. Halloran CCRS ELA 101 Instructional Shifts, Text Complexity, & Vocabulary ( Part 1 of 2) The College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) for Adult Education are a set of college and career readiness standards that reflect the content most relevant to preparing adult students for success in colleges, technical training programs, work and citizenship. In this session participants will investigate the standards and review the key Instructional Shifts identified in the areas of English/Language Arts. We will also discuss the importance of choosing texts of appropriate complexity and teaching academic vocabulary. Activities will encourage a deeper understanding of how to use standards when planning lessons in all content areas. Assignment: Qualitative Analysis of Text *NOTE: Approval of final assignment submission is required for CCRS ELA 100’s Certification *NOTE: ELA101 and ELA102 MUST be taken consecutively.

CCRS ELA 102- A. Halloran CCRS ELA 102 Instructional Shifts, Evidence, & Building Knowledge (Part 2 of 2)Building on work done in ELA 101, participants will continue to investigate standards and review the key instructional shifts. We will focus on the importance of text dependent questions, citing evidence in speaking and writing, and how this helps to build students’ knowledge. Activities will encourage a deeper understanding of how to implement CCRS in instruction in all classrooms. Assignment: Lesson Plan. *NOTE: Approval of final assignment submission is required for CCRS ELA 100’s Certification *Participants must have completed ELA 101 before attending ELA 102. *NOTE: ELA101 and ELA102 MUST be taken consecutively.

TPR methods for ESL -M. FoertschThis workshop will identify what Total Physical Response (TPR) methods are and how to use them in the Adult Education ESL classroom. The presenter will give examples of TPR methods and useful activities for ESL teachers.

Career Pathways Toolkit for ESL Students - M. Reed Marcy Reed will highlight the activities and resources in the Adult Education Career Pathways Toolkit that are directed specifically to ESL students. Resources include career exploration in various career clusters as well as information on workers’ rights – an important topic for our ESL students.

CCRS Math 202* Lesson Development Workshop -(Part II) - C. RiveraA continuation of the morning session for providing our students with high-quality resources and instruction aides their devel-opment of deep understanding and transferable knowledge. During this session, we will build our capacity to identify materi-als and create lessons aligned to the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) in Mathematics. After determining our lesson purpose, we will continue to work in teams to create lessons aligned to the CCRS.

*Prerequisite: Certificate of completion for CCRS Math 100s*Both sessions must be attended today for completion of CCRS Math 202 (continued from above)

Using Technology in the ABE/GED Classroom for Beginners- S. Leduke We know that it’s important that students learn to use technology. They take their GED tests on computers and apply for jobs the same way! But if you aren’t sure how that can look for your classroom, or are a newbie yourself, you need ideas and time to plan. Come to this workshop to hear some basic ideas for integrating technology (what you will do and what your students will do) and then make some plans that you can start using right away using existing technology (yours and/or theirs) or free, readily available on-line options. Bring your own devices to get the most out of this workshop.

CRS Math 202* Lesson Development Workshop - (Part I) - C. Rivera Providing our students with high-quality resources and instruction aides their development of deep understanding and transfer-able knowledge. During this session, we will build our capacity to identify materials and create lessons aligned to the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) in Mathematics. After determining our lesson purpose, we will work in teams to create lessons aligned to the CCRS. Please bring your copy of the standards, the over-sized overview document from the 100 level sessions, a lap-top with Wi-Fi capability, and any “lesson sparks” you would like to reference (activity and lesson idea; an interesting image, graph or news piece; etc.).

Segarra The CASAS Implementation Basics training explains the foundational framework of the CASAS System and CASAS Competencies, as well as introduces additional tools and resources recommended to select, administer and score both paper/pencil and eTest versions of CASAS tests, interpret test results, and identify curriculum support materials to enhance instruction. A Certificate of Completion will be generated following the completion of this course.

This workshop is appropriate for new CCS Program Facilitators and Adult Education Directors.

ESL Best Practices -M. FoertschThis workshop will review some best practices for ESL classroom instruction. Some simple lesson plans will be presented that are based on the ELP Standards. The rigor has been increased for all Adult Education classes to help students transition into successful careers and/or higher education.

This workshop is appropriate for ESL teachers.

• Adopting Evaluation for Adult Education Professionals Part I: This session will review the requirements for certified staff evaluation in adult educa-tion programs, provide an overview of the state approved plan, the Adult Education Educator Evaluation and Support Plan (2016).

• Adopting Evaluation for Adult Education Professionals Part II: Effective Feedback for ADULT EDUCTION INSTRUCTION will review the skills needed by evaluators to collect objective, representative and aligned data about teacher performance.

• Communicating About Evaluation to Staff: This session will help pre-pare participants to share information about the state approved evaluation plan with staff. The session will review the plan components and will help evaluators describe the teacher performance expected at each rating level.

• Rating Calibration Practice: Participants will take a deep dive into the lan-guage of the teacher evaluation rubric and use a variety of tools to practice incorporat-ing the language of the rubric into feedback.

• Teacher Evaluation Roundtable: This workshop is open to Adult Education Teacher Evaluators who have completed their Teacher Evaluation Parts I & II that are using the Adult Ed Evaluation Plan. As a group, participants can talk specifics about what is and is not working with the plan. Participants should bring samples of forms, procedures, etc to share with others and discuss how they approach the evaluation process.

• Integrating Technology Into Classroom Instruction: Participants will learn the basics of Nearpod, a free technology platform that can be used to create content, engage students and assess students by using mobile devices to design inter-active lessons. Participants will also share lesson ideas and resources that have been effective.

• Using Digital Tools to Support English Learners: Participants will identify and preview digital tools to support English language acquisition and help student with limited English access content through websites, apps and software.

• Digital Literacy: Essential Elements of CCR. This session explores strategies for incorporating digital literacy in your programming and share a multitude of tools and resources to help foster your students’ digital skills to help them thrive in their academic, professional, and personal lives.

• GED Math This workshop will identify instructional tips for teaching inequalities for the GED® Test.

• GED Science: Participants will learn about and practice a variety of instructional strategies and teaching tips for Science developed by GED Testing Service. These will feature best practices for engaging students in problem-solving and higher order think-ing skills .

• GED Social Studies: Participants will learn about and practice a variety of instructional strategies and teaching tips for Social Studies developed by GED Testing Service, along with best practices for engaging students in problem-solving and higher order thinking skills.

• GED Writing: This workshop will review the latest updates on the GED® Writing Exam. The presenter will discuss strategies, tools and resources that will improve stu-dent success.

• GED RLA: This workshop will review the latest updates on the GED® Reading Lan-guage Arts component. The presenter will discuss strategies, tools and resources that will improve student success.

• Statewide Disabilities Workshops: These sessions will provide information about key issues, mandates and timely topics to help teachers and programs effectively address the needs of adults with disabilities.

• Disability Focus Group: The Disability Focus Group is a team of individuals who focus on workshops related to disability for the adult education community. This group also works to plan and organized the annual Disability Conference.

• Disability Contact Persons: This person serves each program in dealing with student disability related issues. The DCP is required to attend mandatory trainings twice per year.• Career Pathways: This session will include an overview on navigating through the

Career Pathways toolkit and how to embed employability (soft) skills into your curricu-lum. The purpose is to provide resources that are ready to use for instruction.

• ESL/ELP: This workshop is intended for those who have awareness of the ELP Standards but have not thoroughly integrated them into lessons, or those who are total beginners with those standards.

• Data Download: Were you ever asked questions that the reports or data verifies didn’t have the answer? Would you like to be able to offer customizable sheets with rel-evant program data that can answer these questions following a few steps? Come find out how to analyze student demographics, enrollments, and more in our Data Down-loads PD!

• TOPSpro & Using Reports: Get a complete performance picture--benefit from longitudinal performance information. This TOPSpro workshop will review the different reports and how to use them for classroom instruction and understand how it connects to the CASAS Competencies.

• NEDP New Advisor/Assessor Training: This workshop is required for any Adult Education staff who hold a CT Certification #107 endorsement to become a NEDP Adviser/Assessor. The cost of this extensive workshop covers the cost of the CASAS NEDP materials. Attendance at all three days of workshops is required.

• NEDP Evaluation Workshop: This session is for new advisors/assessors to complete the NEDP certification process.

• NEDP Refresher Training: Participants will review policies, procedures and practices associated with the NEDP program including the roles and responsibilities of the advisor, assessor and portfolio reviewer.

• NEDP Policies and Procedures: This a required annual update for all • certified advisors/assessors to review new and existing policies and procedures that

tency-based assessment and instructional system implemented by adult education programs and other state agencies that share a common client base. It provides a comprehensive, research based framework for a common core of competencies that youth and adults need to lead productive lives. CCS is based on the system developed by the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS).

• Facilitator’s meetings: This meeting of Program Facilitators provides continued support in the implementation of the CCS system and overall program improvement. This includes gathering information and assessing needs of local districts regarding professional development and implementation of state and federal initiatives.

• CCRS ELA 101: Instructional Shifts, Text Complexity, & Vocabulary Part 1 of 2. Participants will investigate the standards and review the key Instructional Shifts identified in the areas of English/Language Arts. Activities will encourage a deeper understanding of how to use standards when planning lessons in all content areas. Assignments are required NOTE: ELA101 and ELA102 MUST be taken consecutively.• CCRS ELA 102: Instructional Shifts, Evidence, & Building

Knowledge Part 2 of 2. Building on work done in ELA 101, participants will con-tinue to investigate standards and review the key instructional shifts. We will focus on the importance of text dependent questions, citing evidence in speaking and writing and how this helps to build students’ knowledge.

• CCRS Math 102(A) Standards for Mathematical Practice (3 hour session) Part 3 of 4 workshops. Building on work done in CCRS Math 101, partic-ipants will experience problems worth puzzling through and analyze the habits of mind required to solve those problems. We will investigate four of the Practices through activities that illustrate the ways students are to engage with the subject matter of the content standards. The skills of complex problem solving, reasoning and proof, precise communication, and making connections will be practiced and discussed.

• CCRS Math 102(B) Standards for Mathematical Practice (3 hour session) Part 4 of 4 workshops. Building on work of CCRS Math 102(A), participants will experience problems worth puzzling through and analyze the habits of mind required to solve those problems. We will investigate four of the Practices through activities that illustrate the ways students are to engage with the subject matter of the content standards. The skills of complex problem solving, modeling, precise com-munication, and making connections will be practiced and discussed. Activities will encourage a deeper understanding of how to implement CCRS in instruction. Par-ticipants will create a standards-based lesson plan or draft unit outline that integrates both the Key Instructional Shifts and the Standards for Mathematical Practice with priority content standards. *Participants must have completed Math 101(A) and 101 (B) as well as Math 102 (A) before attending Math 102(B).

• CCRS MATH 101A Introduction and Key Instructional Shifts (3 hour session) Part 1 of 4 In this session, participants will become familiar with the standards and how to navigate them. We will investigate the Key Instructional Shifts mathematics instruction must make in order for students to succeed. After registra-tion, participants will receive pre-session work to be completed prior to the session.

• CCRS Math 101(B) Key Instructional Shifts (3 hour session) Part 2 of 4 workshops. Building on the work of 101(A), participants will become familiar with the standards and how to navigate them. The content standards calling for a balance of conceptual understanding, fluency with procedures, and application to real-world and mathematical contexts will be explored. *Participants must have completed Math 101(A) before attending Math 101(B).
