Dato Pehin Suyoi spent several hours at Trinity College meeting staff, touring the facilities, and talking to some of the current and former Trinity College Foundation Studies students from Brunei.

He showed very keen interest in Trinity College Foundation Studies as a pathway for Brunei students to undergraduate study at the University of Melbourne. Speaking at an informal dinner with a dozen young Brunei citizens who are current or past Trinity students, he said how impressed he was with the education and support they received at Trinity. ‘You are clearly in very good hands’, he told them.

Deputy Minister of Education in Brunei Darussalam, Pehin Suyoi, is pictured with staff, alumni and current TCFS students.

VIP visit from Brunei S K I T R I POur journey began before dawn on a cold

Saturday morning. Sleepy, drowsy cold faces

started appearing outside the Student Services

building in Grattan Street as we boarded the bus

for what was to be a weekend to remember.

Most of us spent the 3 hour journey taking a quick snooze. Before long, we arrived at the cabin park that would be our accommodation for the night. Then it was on to equipment rental. The biggest dilemma while getting fitted with equipment was the choice between snowboards and skis. That, and having to reveal our heights and true weights!

Soon enough we found ourselves on the thick snow-covered slopes of Mount Buller. Eager to get our day started we rushed up the ski lifts and made it to our ski lessons with minutes to spare. The instructors were very professional at getting us all started. In the beginning we were just standing on our skis but after a few falls and small crashes many of us managed to make it down the slopes on our own.

Time does fly when you’re having fun! We reluctantly headed back for a warm dinner at the cabin park. The night progressed with a light karaoke session and some rock and roll dancing led by our guide, Peter.

We were back on the mountain early the next morning. A good breakfast gave us enough energy to make it through the day. Many decided to stay on the same slopes as the day before, although an adventurous few took on some steeper ones. The non-skiers spent the day on toboggans, snow ball fights, igloo making, and even a “snow facial”. (Warning: do not try this at home!)

The time came for us to head back to Melbourne, but not without a final picture or three. I can still see spots from all the camera flashes! Once again we were back on the bus, worn out, but not without smiles on our faces. Everyone had the time of their lives, and we had the sore limbs to prove it!

As you can see, the Mt Buller Ski Trip 2004 was a tremendous success. Special thanks must go to Stephen Lew from the Student Services department, who organised everything and kept everyone up to date on the trip. We must also thank our very accommodating tour guides Peter and Damien, our amusing bus driver Michael, and of course all the whacky and fun- loving participants.
