Greetings,

More than thirty years after his death, Andy Warhol remains one of the most famous yet enigmatic artists of his generation. When we hear his name, we may think of consumer brands such as Coca Cola or Brillo. Similarly, his fascination with celebrities is well documented in his famous images of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley among others. Warhol, a celebrity himself, frequently interacted with musicians, vocalists, and dancers. Warhol Live: Music and Dance in Andy Warhol’s Work is the first major exhibition to investigate the connections between the acclaimed illustrator, filmmaker, painter, printmaker, and sculptor and the performing arts of music and dance.

There are few cities more attuned to Warhol’s interdisciplinary interests than Nashville. It has been a special pleasure to pair this intelligent and entertaining exhibition with spectacular musical acts this summer. Please join us in July as we wrap up a dynamic Frist Fridays season that started in May with Same As It Ever Was, a Talking Heads tribute band, followed by the June performance that featured The Long Players and their rendition of the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album. We’ll continue to embrace the era and Warhol’s connections to the music world when DJ Ron Slomowicz arrives for a Studio 54 remix on July 29. Start planning your celebrity look-alike costumes now!

Throughout the summer and into the fall we will also continue to offer live music at the Frist Center on Thursday and Friday evenings. Public programs also include dance performances. Please check the listings inside for details or visit us at www.fristcenter.org.

Make plans now to join us in the coming months.

Andy Warhol’s love for movies and their music is reflected in “Hollywood,” the first section of Warhol Live. On view are paintings of Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli, as well as cherished mementos, such as a postcard signed “To Andrew Worhola [sic], From Shirley Temple.” As fascinated with celebrity as he was with film, Warhol was particularly drawn to the subject of Elvis Presley. Triple Elvis is one of a series of paintings based on a publicity photo for the Western Flaming Star (1960). In it, Warhol notes with subtle irony the modern penchant for using celebrities in one field to bring their gloss to another. Warhol considered including a sound recording of a pistol shot in an exhibition of the series, but eventually decided against it.

Warhol Live is produced by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in partnership with The Andy Warhol Museum, one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.

This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

Created in 1854 by Sister Hannah Cohoon at the Hancock Shaker village (or City of Peace as it was also known) in western Massachusetts, this simple yet striking watercolor is an example of what believers called a “Gift Drawing.” Such drawings are depictions of visions that the Shakers considered to be gifts from the spirit world. Written in ink below the tree, Sister Hannah recounts her divine visit:

I received a draft of a beautiful Tree…bearing ripe fruit. I saw it plainly…I have since learned that this tree grows in the Spirit Land. Afterwards the spirit show’d me plainly the branches, leaves and fruit….

Exhibition organized by Hancock Shaker village, Pittsfield, MA. Tour organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC. Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Bob Jones university Museum & Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina, possesses one of the finest collections of Old Master paintings in the united States. This exhibition focuses on its Northern Renaissance pictures, which have been little studied since they were acquired in the mid-twentieth century. Twenty-eight fifteenth- and sixteenth-century paintings from Germany, France, the Lowlands, and Spain, including four that have recently undergone conservation, have been selected for this presentation. The fully illustrated catalogue, published by the Frist Center, sheds new light on the formation of this impressive collection and explores the context in which these complex and breathtakingly beautiful paintings were made.

The exhibition was organized by the Frist Center for the visual Arts and the Bob Jones university Museum & Gallery.

The roadside motel has been immortalized on the silver screen as a transitory place where identity and morality are often in question. In the installation Woman on the Run, Tracey Snelling makes a motel on the outskirts of an Arizona town the setting for a whodunit. She casts herself as a pretty blonde fleeing the crime scene and museum visitors as bystanders in search of the facts. using architecture, sculpture, video, and audio, Snelling playfully

heightens the campiness of classic film noir tropes as a way of critically examining the stereotypes they engender, especially in regard to women.

Organized by the Frist Center for the visual Arts with the Southeast Center for Contemporary Art.
