At the joint meeting of the College Music Society (CMS) and American Society of University Composers (ASUC ) meeting in Iowa City, 13–16 February 1975, some participants suggested making plans for a music theory conference during the following year, including John Rahn, who gave a proposal for this at the ASUC Business meeting on February 15. This eventually led to the First National Conference on Music Theory that was held in Boston in 1976, overlapping with the end of the 1976 ASUC meeting.
