History of Austin DAmAustin was one of the boom towns of the region’s 1890-1910 lumber era. As

the old growth trees were vanishing, the Freeman Run valley still had immense tracts of pulpwood. Industrialist George Bayless arrived from Binghamton,

N.Y., to build a paper mill.Freeman Run couldn’t supply the

steady flow of water needed to power the mill, so Bayless in 1909 contracted for the construction of a huge con-crete dam. It stretched nearly 550 feet across the valley, stood 50 feet high, and held approximately 250 million

gallons of water at a depth of 40 feet. While some townspeople worried that the dam might break, most saw it as a

symbol of continued employment and prosperity. They speculated that, even if the dam failed, Austin was far enough downstream that the water’s depth would probably be no more than a few inches.

The dam gave way on the afternoon of Sept. 30, 1911, releasing a torrent that claimed upwards of 80 lives and nearly wiped out the town. After the flood, many families moved out. Others persevered and rebuilt the community.

Austin Dam memorial Association: the mission ContinuesMomentum has been building for a plan to expand the Austin Dam Memo-

rial Park and link it to the town of Austin. Austin Dam Memorial Association (ADMA) and Austin Borough Council are cooperating on a project to establish a walking/bicycling trail and historical exhibit in the 17 acres of the Freeman Run valley, running parallel to Rt. 872.

It’s just the latest in a serious of ambitious goals that have been set -- and in many cases accomplished -- as ADMA continues its mission to preserve local

history and capitalize on the special history of the Freeman Run valley.State funds will pay for a feasibility study and project plan. It will include

recommendations on location of trails, designation of environmentally sensi-tive areas, property acquisition, removal of hazardous property features, and other aspects. An economic development element is also included, based on the potential to create or support businesses as a result of the park expansion.

With the same spirit of determination that has kept Austin on the map through fires, floods and other challenges, community-minded citizens recog-nize that a critical element of the town’s future lies in capitalizing on its proud and glorious history.

Volunteers are needed to help ADMA accomplish its goals. Anyone interest-ed in becoming involved should contact Tracie Gordnier at [email protected] or 814-647-3318.

Teamwork is especially important in advance of the year 2011, the centennial of the Austin Dam’s failure and an opportunity to celebrate the spirit of a com-munity that was – and still is – too tough to die.

the Dam show: A Great 7th year on tapThe Dam Show runs for its seventh time this year, with a strong lineup of

musicians who may not have household names but have backgrounds that mark them as world class performers. Quality, musical integrity, original-ity, energy and fun are what Dam Show goers have come to expect. Once again, they will not be disappointed!

This year’s festival could be called a Dam Show of champions. It is also a year when many of the groups have newly-completed recording projects. There are about a half dozen new albums from our roster of artists. One group – the Skiffle Minstrels from Buffalo – used the Dam Show as incentive for wrapping up their recording project.

Among the “champions” are Moira Smiley and VOCO from Los Angeles. Two years ago this group of four women took top honors at the National Sweep-stakes A Cappella Festival. That is the meeting place of the best of young pro-fessional groups, college jazz groups, barbershop quartets and more from around the country.

The Hickory Project returns to the Dam Show with national mandolin champion

Anthony Hannigan joined by Coleman Smith, a two-time Texas fiddle champion before he went on to become a college trained classical and jazz violinist. Absolutely stunning—is an apt description of the music of

the five-piece virtuoso string band. They will be heading off to the Falcon Ridge Festival after their Friday night shows here.

The Dam Show is pleased to have the Vinegar Creek Constituency on board for both days. Last year, the band took top honors in competition at Delfest in Maryland, hosted by the great Del McCoury. At that festival Jeff Bryson, the band’s mandolinist traded licks with the great mandolin player Ronnie McCoury. Jeff is a winner of the mandolin competition at the Tel-luride Bluegrass Festival.

Expect more great things from mandolinist, and new dad, Mark Schimick, playing with Larry Keel and Natural Bridge on Saturday evening. Larry Keel, whose early accomplishments include the guitar championship at the Telluride Festival is one of the most sought after guitarists in the country. But his best times are with Natural Bridge with his wife on bass, a great group of original songs and an exquisite set of instrumentalists.

Jakob’s Hollow, a talented group of singer/songwriters who have landed in Couderpsport will be featuring music from their newly-released album. The group includes Steve Quelet, Eppie Bailey, Josh Wolf and Judy Shunk. Also featured will be works from an album in progress, with songs having historical themes including some relating to the Austin Dam Disaster.

Featured on Saturday evening will be new music by the Coudersport/Tennessee “van setters” group Freakish Owl Boy.

The Slant, will be performing at the Hard Rock Café in Pittsburgh the night before they return home to play the Dam Show with new songs.

Professional songwriter for the stars Larry Herbstritt of Coudersport has put together a band of his music students who will perform on Saturday afternoon. There are great sounds coming out of that project.

Another youngster with local connections, 11-year old Jesse Alexander from Lodi, NY will be bringing the band with his name to the Dam Show. Jesse learned fiddle and mandolin from some of the greats of traditional bluegrass music at his family festival called Pickin’ In the Pasture.

moira smiley and VoCoVocal harmony is the forte of Moira Smiley and VOCO – and the group’s

excellence was recognized in 2007 with the National A Cappella Harmony Championship, an honor reserved for the very best of the best.

Moira Smiley and VOCO sing powerful, emotional music with lush har-mony and the delicious vaudevillian combo of cello, accordion and banjo. Sprinkled throughout their songs are rompin’, stompin’ body percussion sets, always a crowd-pleas-er.

moira smiley is known internationally

as a composer and vocalist who sometimes accompanies the band with ac-cordion or banjo. She previously toured with another vocal quartet, VIDA, which recorded three CDs of folk and original songs. In 2002 she deepened explorations of Eastern European vocal music with the renowned KITKA

Larry Keel and natural Bridge Connecting traditional songs of yesterday with their own original and

inventive sounds of today, Larry Keel and Natural Bridge create aston-ishingly powerful acoustic music rich in heritage, heart and hot licks.

While paying respect to the legacy left by the forefa-thers of bluegrass, the band bridges the gap between traditional and contempo-rary American mountain music. Members are Larry Keel (guitar, vocals), Jenny Keel (bass fiddle, vocals), Mark Schimick (mandolin, vocals), and Jason Flournoy (banjo, vocals).

Born and raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia,

Larry Keel has always been immersed in the traditional ways and etiquette of playing mountain music. He’s rec-ognized as a world-class flatpicking guitarist and is a former champion of the prestigious guitar competition at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. In recent performances Larry has led bands involving such industry icons

Larry’s wife, Jenny Keel, plays the stand-up bass with impeccable timing and solid, yet imaginative, bass lines. She also adds an important compo-nent of harmony to the band’s vocal pieces.

Mark Schimick is one of the more versatile and fiery mandolin pickers on the acoustic music scene. Moreover, Mark has a clear and powerful singing voice.

The addition of banjoist Jason Flournoy has enabled Larry Keel and Nat-ural Bridge to soar to new heights. He’s also a seasoned songwriter.

Larry Keel seeks to nurture and preserve our American musical heritage while letting it inspire his own original writing and playing. As he pays his deepest respects to the masters who invented bluegrass, Keel has become a master himself and a true heir to the bluegrass legacy. His talents as a guitar genius, as an innovative and expressive singer-songwriter place him among the best of the purveyors of American mountain music.

reDHeADeD stePCHiLDNo Dam Show would be complete without the duo, Redheaded

Stepchild. Kathryn Koch and David Nanni were recruited for an early show and fell in love with the festival, the region and its people.

Born in 1996 amidst the fertile folk music scene of Buffalo, today Redhead-ed Stepchild is based in the fertile mu-sical crescent of Nashville. Built around Kathryn’s fiery vocals and the lyrical and melodic sensibilities that both art-ists share, the duo’s songs are steeped in tradition, yet intensely original.

With a wide palette of acoustic sounds -- including Koch’s harmonica and sax-ophone work and Nanni’s driving gui-tar style – the band presents a treasure trove of the familiar and the new.

“Kathryn Koch is blessed with a soulful voice born to sing the blues,” said the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News.

Redheaded Stepchild has played in more than 250 venues across 26 states and has opened for such di-verse acts Rusted Root, They Might Be Giants, Commander Cody and many other notables.

VineGAr CreeK ConstituenCy Winner of last year’s prestigious DelFest Bluegrass Competition, Vinegar

Creek Constituency features a lifelong rock ‘n roll singer-songwriter, a clas-sically trained double bassist, and some smokin’ bluegrass pickers.

The group’s traditional bluegrass instrumentation and special chemistry has proven surprisingly flexible: besides high-voltage bluegrass, Vinegar Creek Constituency does a variety of originals, rockabilly, classic country,

and a few punk rock ditties just to shake things up.

The group’s tra-ditional bluegrass instrumentation has proven surprisingly flexible, and the band’s sound chan-

nels the venerable old ghosts of American folk tradition through imagina-tive, inventive original songs delivered with rock ‘n roll intensity.

VCC’s live repertoire also includes high-voltage renditions of bluegrass standards, classic Hank and Cash-style country, and a few punk rock ditties just to make the grass purists squirm.

The DelFest honor was not the only accolade for this fast-rising ensemble last summer. Vinegar Creek Constit-uency was also a finalist in the 2008 Neo-Traditional String Band contest in Clifftop, W. Va., and continues to

blends musical structure with innovation in a uniquely effective way. The band’s name, Free Grass Union, describes these seemingly contradictory elements to a “T.”

Kim Humphrey (guitar/vocals), Greg Butler (mandolin/vocals) and Mitch Erdman (upright bass) were drawn to bluegrass long before it be-came trendy among younger populations and they’ve never strayed from their roots. The Long Island-based band plays a broad festival circuit across the Northeast, blending traditional bluegrass with occasional jazz, psyche-delic, reggae as well as other forms of world music – truly “free grass.”

guitar just so he could be in this band. In an effort to stay in the band, he has learned to sing harmonies and keeps insisting he’s “still learning” gui-tar.

ron Kowalewski, an educator, entertainer, and accordionist with a pas-sion for Zydeco and roots music, infuses many Skiffle classics with a taste of the bayou.

Phil Knoerzer is no stranger to Americana music. Back in 1971, he was a founding member of The American Flyer Jug Band. A self-taught guitarist and harmonica player, he’s also a founding member of the Skiffle Min-strels.

maggie Zindle has been fiddling around with the Skiffle Minstrels for four years. She started the violin when she was eight, quit when she was eighteen, and picked it up again—in the guise of a fiddle—in 2005.

Gus russo is a veteran drummer who spent fifteen years with Buffalo legends LeeRon Zydeco and the Hot Tamales. He is happy to be the newest member of the Skiffle Minstrels.

the Jesse Alexander BandJesse Alexander first appeared on stage when he was two years

old with the legendary Bob Paisley.Perhaps the master’s touch rubbed off on him. Jesse learned to

play fiddle and mandolin with great skill and has become an accomplished singer, whether it’s carrying the lead or chiming in with harmony.

Bluegrass friends have been avail-able to help along the way and, to-day, the 11-year-old phenom has one album under his belt and is working on another.

Jesse is one of three musicians asso-ciated with the Dow family of Austin who will be performing at this year’s Dam Show.

He’s equally comfortable in the stu-dio or on the stage.

Jesse is fresh off an appearance as a performer and instructor at the 20th annual Fiddlers’ Gathering at Watkins Glen State Park.

Show VII.Jakob’s Hollow is coming off the release of its first CD, “The Legend of Bobby

the Kid,” and continues an ambitious summer concert schedule.

Singer/songwriter Steve Quelet had already tasted success in the folk music business when he and his wife, Deb, relocated to Potter County in 2003. They came for the rural lifestyle, un-aware that a musical chemistry would soon form. Quelet crossed paths with local musicians Eppie Bailey and Judy Shunk and Jakob’s Hol-low Band was formed.

Josh Wolf came along in 2008, adding a new di-mension that inspired the original trio to move forward with long-discussed plans to produce an album.

Jakob’s Hollow blends the homespun humor for which Quelet has become known with social commentary and other themes drawn from both real life

and active imaginations. Quelet, Bai-ley and Wolf each lend their own in-dividual vocal styles in ear-pleasing fashion, sometimes supported by har-monies that carry just enough spon-taneity and improvisation to give the music a feeling of intimacy. Instrumen-tal work is solid with a heavy dose of rhythm guitar, complemented by Shunk’s solid upright bass work.

While Jakob’s Hollow expands its foray into original music, the band still plays covers of folk, rock, blues, country and old timey classics during live performances, adding its own twist.

Eppie Bailey also shares her considerable vocal skills with Freakish Owl Boy, a band that’s more eclectic and ties together family connections. She is joined by Ezra Cataldo, Julie Barrett Cataldo and Logan Bailey.

The band prides itself on creativity and non-conformance with any tried and true musical genre. What emerges is an interesting, ear-pleasing and often un-predictable menu of music with a certain element of free spirit that draws in the listener for a break from life’s trials and tribulations.

tHe sLAntA band with deep Potter County roots returns to the Dam Show

with strong appeal to younger audiences but also an intriguing at-traction to more seasoned music fans.

Members of The Slant have not dropped everything to pursue their music – they’re all college educated with alternative careers – but they also have not given up on their dream of riding the “indie rock” express as far as it will take them.

Lead singer Mark Zedonek sets the tone with a versatile and whol-ly original vocal instrument. Zedonek, Zach Dow (drums) and Brad Austin (bass) are all Coudersport products, while bandmate Andre Costello (guitar) comes from Ellwood City.

College crowds and eclectic music fans are devout followers of The Slant, which bases its original sound on a foundation of folk and rock music, with interesting and often unpredictable detours.

The Slant is fresh off the release of a new album,“The Makings of This House,” released last month, billed as a work that “musically represents the home in which it was recorded.”

tom mArtin, trouBADourCoudersport’s Tom Martin is a tree-feller and arborist, but music is an-

other of his passions. A singer, guitarist and songwriter, he’s a combina-tion balladeer and storyteller who mixes classic rock songs and even some

gospel in his own repertoire, always with feeling.

Martin years ago entertained whoever came along as a street musician, Couder-sport-style, strum-ming his guitar and singing at the courthouse square.

He left town with his guitar in one hand and a suitcase in the other, desti-nation unknown. Fate would bring him back to Coudersport, which has al-ways been home in his heart. Martin is often found performing for worthy causes and we’re pleased to welcome him back to the Dam Show.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW . . . THE RULES1) fAmiLies first! The Dam Show has an interesting mix of perform-ers-- that’s an annual goal. But an even more important goal is that this is maintained as a festival that is safe and comfortable for families. The legacy of the Dam Show is one of high quality performances on stage and a peaceful, mellow feeling where festival goers can be relaxed, comfortable and able to enjoy the entertainment without any irritation. The sound system is tweaked in a way that folks can hear the nuances of the music and don’t have to spend time trying to figure if the decibel level might exceed recommended limits. 2) GOOD TASTE. The Dam Association reserves the right, and has never even had to think about using that right-- to remove anyone from the property who fails to act in good taste in any way and fails to ob-serve the Families First Rule Number 1. 3) FOLLOW THE DAM RULES. They include NO CLIMBING ON DAM RUINS. Save that for the lights.4) CHiLDren must Be suPerViseD By tHeir ADuLts At ALL times. There may be some break times if children are engaged in ac-tivities like storytelling or art projects-- But the watchful eye of parents is a necessity. There is nothing more annoying to our volunteers than having to ask children not to climb on the dam ruins or asking chil-dren not to ride bikes through the crowd or other questionable activities while parents sit by passively. 5) REALizE THAT THE PARK iS A WORK iN PROGRESS. We are charged with maintaining the park as a heritage property and preserv-ing the property as a study site. Part of the reservation in aggressively
