St Ann’s is at the heart of Manchester and has a long tradition of offering the best as part of the cultural life of the city. The organ recital series goes back at least to the early 1920’s. The concert programme is based on the church’s own extensive musical life and on its links with musicians from across the country. But it is here in Manchester that most of our contributing musicians are based,

especially through the Royal Northern College of Music.Musicians are never simply players or singers. They are men and women, and sometimes children, who are offering something of themselves. Skills are developed over the years but at the heart of performance is a communication between the player or the singer and his or her listeners. In this way the experience of music is analogous to prayer – which is why music has always had a central place in the Church’s worship.Here in the city centre it is natural for us to present a high quality musical offering. It is meant to engage the audience and to make our contribution to the rich cultural life of our great city. You are welcome to be part of it.Revd Nigel Ashworth, Rector

St. Ann’s is a fantastic venue for concerts; we have a wonderful acoustic suited to all genres of music, a Steinway Model B kindly on loan from the Royal Northern College of Music, one of the finest pipe organs in the North, and even – a rare feature for parish churches – balcony seating!I hope you will be able to attend as many concerts as you can this

term, there are some brilliant artists and some very exciting programmes lined up. It is vitally important to support the development of contemporary music, and, in partnership with pianist Kate Halsall, we have started a ‘New Music Series’ – programmes consisting primarily of contemporary works. We have a huge variety of different concerts on offer, and we are delighted to welcome back returning artists, such as the fabulously entertaining Gravity Percussion Duo (October), RNCM Jazz Ensemble (November), Ad Solem (December) and many more.We would not be able to put these concerts on without a great deal of work and help from the staff and volunteers at St. Ann’s. We are very grateful to the Ida Carroll Trust, The Royal Northern College of Music and all others who continue to support the musical life here. Tuesday Series: RNCM Jazz Collective (Director: Mike Hall) The RNCM Jazz Collective has been a long-time act in the Tuesday Series. They return once again under the direction of Mike Hall. As always, this is a popular and fun concert.

1926: A Great Year for JazzWe will be exploring big band repertoire which is associated in various ways with the year 1926! The Bach Project: Final Recital This year has seen the complete organ works of JS Bach performed at St. Ann’s. MessiahUndoubtedly the most popular and frequently-performed oratorio in the entire repertoire, Handel’s Messiah has grown in popularity ever since its first performance in 1741. Composed in just three weeks, it is a masterful work, based on the subject of Jesus Christ; the prophecies of his arrival, his birth in the stable in Bethlehem, his death and resurrection, and finally the Day of Judgement.Our performance is based on the first-known performance of the piece, this took place in Dublin in 1742. Handel made alterations to his original score so that it suited the soloists available – an Italian soprano, an English contralto and male soloists taken from Dublin’s cathedral choirs. St. Ann’s Ensemble, consisting of graduates of the RNCM, and St. Ann’s Choir will be directed by Simon Passmore. Filled with dazzling solos (Rejoice greatly, Ev’ry valley) and powerful choruses (Hallelujah, Worthy is the Lamb), Messiah is the perfect start to the Christmas season. A must-see! New Music Series: JuxtavoicesAudiences are unfailingly surprised by the Juxtavoices sound. Some try to name-check composers in the avant-garde tradition but none quite fit. Some shudder at the dark theatricality, some hear the humour, some are outraged while others feel an irresistible urge to join the ranks. This is singing on the edge of not-singing or vice versa, a music only previously heard in a sound-poet’s dreams.
