Have you ever thought that Carmel doesn’t have any hip music venues? Well think again! I recently had the opportunity to check out the Warehouse on Old Meridian Street and talk to one of the founders, Joey Christianson, about this unique venue.

Christianson describes the founding of the Warehouse this way, “I was in a band at the time and we didn’t have anywhere to play in Westfield, so we were like ‘shoot, what do we do?’ We happened to have a big empty building in the back of our church, and we thought that it would be a perfect place to hold concerts.” He continued by saying, “There were about six or seven local bands at the time that wanted a place to play. So it was kind of like, we have a place, now we just have to do some work to make it all happen.”

Concerts usually happen once a month. They definitely go for quality of concerts not the quantity. The quality of the concerts brings high school and college students from all around the area over to the Warehouse to hang out with friends and listen to the great bands on the lineup. Bands that frequent the Warehouse are described as “indie,” and include groups like Deas Vail, Dark Room, Farewell Flight, and Lorien.

The venue is comparable in size to other independent music venues in the area. The Warehouse itself can hold 300 people, and its open floor plan offers a great view wherever you stand. The Warehouse even has a concession stand! What more could you ask for?

One of the most unique things about the Warehouse is the mindset in which it operates. Christianson considers the Warehouse a ministry. For concert attendees, every concert is $7.00, compared to different venues with the same bands charging anywhere between $10.00 and $12.00. When

it comes to the bands that come in and play, Christianson says, “We are able to give back so much to the bands. If I charge $7.00, we are giving $6.00 of that back to the bands.” The Warehouse provides a win-win for both the music artist and the fan.

The next concert is May 21 at 7:00 p.m., and the lineup includes Farewell Flight, Lorien, Mid-American, and the Olympians. Christianson encourages you to “Come and check us out!”

The Warehouse is located on the campus of River Oaks Community Church at 13200 Old Meridian Street in Carmel. Check them out on Facebook as well! Search: “ROCC Warehouse.”

This past weekend my family and several friends participated in the Race for the Cure, the event sponsored by the Susan G. Komen For the Cure, which seeks to raise funds for breast cancer patients, help with their treatments and hopefully find a cure for breast cancer. It was an amazing day. There were over 40,000 people there to participate; everyone was decked out in pink to support the cause; there was free Starbucks – the list of awesomeness goes on and on. I was surrounded by my kids and my family, and I felt inspired and loved, even in the middle of the race when my 3-year-old had a meltdown over spilled orange juice.

But at the end of the race, I was struck by something. As I looked around at the massive crowd, I began to think about how each of these people had made their donation to participate in the race, and that this is just one of a hundred races Komen will hold globally, and that Komen’s been doing them for 28 years. And I kept coming back to one nagging thought, “All this, and I still got cancer. How? Why?”

The “hows” and the “whys” of my cancer are elusive and dangerous topics for me. I catch myself all the time lost in the thoughts of the randomness of this

event. I‘ll be sitting in the chemo chair receiving treatment, mindlessly flipping through the pages of some trashy magazine, and become fixated on trying to understand why I’m sitting there while Kim Kardashian is sitting by a pool in Miami. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not wishing cancer upon Ms. Kardashian, and I’m sure she’s a perfectly lovely girl, but something about the image of her enjoying a beautiful sunny day at a 5-star resort while I’m having toxins pumped in my veins makes me feel a little crazy. Why me? Why not her? Or that guy? Or anyone else I bump into at the grocery store? And why my good friend David,

who lost his battle with melanoma almost two years ago? He was a larger-than-life man who could energize a room with his presence and had a wife and two boys to whom he was completely devoted. I want to try and find the pattern in all the randomness in an effort to understand it all. Sometimes I feel like if I could understand the reason I have cancer, then somehow it will put my mind at peace, maybe make all the

pain I’ve experienced a little less painful. Perhaps if I knew the answers to all the “hows” and the “whys,” I wouldn’t lay awake at night worrying about my baby girl, and if this will happen to her some day.

The more I consider these questions, the further I seem to get from the answers. I lean on my faith, and the kind words of friends and strangers who all say, “You’re going to beat this thing.” As I was writing this, I was reminded of a conversation I once had with my friend David. We used

to run triathlons together, and I was really nervous about an upcoming event. By this point in his life, David had been diagnosed and treated, and defeated cancer twice already, so he had a unique perspective on life. He told me, “Just run your race, Jen. Don’t worry about how anyone else is running. Run your race for you, and you’ll be just fine.” And when I think of those words, I suppose they hold an answer for me that is as good as any I can find. Maybe the important thing isn’t the how or the why, but the here and the now. The truly important thing is to fight and beat this disease, to “run my race,” and if I focus on that, it really doesn’t matter how or why it happened to me.

Sometimes I feel like if I could understand the reason I have cancer, then somehow it will put my mind at peace, maybe make all the pain I’ve experienced a little less painful.

Most of us are excited as summer is almost here. My family enjoys Pesto Chicken Salad even in the midst of the winter season, probably because it reminds us of summertime with warm days of sunshine and the sound of boats parading on Geist. In fact, Pesto Chicken Salad sandwiches make a great lunch or dinner on any boat! This tasty recipe is great on croissants, ciabatta sandwich rolls, pumpernickel bread, or crackers.

PESTO CHICKEN SALAD• 3 boneless chicken breasts

• 1/3 red pepper, diced

• 1 small onion, diced

• 1 teaspoon minced garlic

• 6 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped or about 2 teaspoons dried basil (fresh organic basil leaves used here)

• ½ cup mayo with olive oil or regular mayo/salad dressing (Kraft Mayo with Olive Oil used here)

• ¼ cup Italian dressing

• ½ cup pine nuts, walnuts, pecans, or sliced almonds

• Salt

• Dried basil

Boil chicken breasts until tender (about 30 minutes) and drain. Refrigerate for at least an hour. This will prevent chicken from shredding when you cut it into pieces.

In a large bowl, combine chopped red pepper, onion, garlic, basil, mayo, Italian dressing and favorite nuts. Cut

refrigerated chicken into bite sized pieces. Sprinkle with salt and dried basil while still on cutting board. Add chicken to pesto blend and mix well. Serve with your favorite bread or crackers. This recipe goes especially well with pasta salad. Look for the “Italian Rainbow Pasta Salad” in an upcoming issue!

For most residents of Central Indiana, spring is the best time

of year. Everyone emerges from their winter hibernation,

greets their neighbors, and gets outside. Carmelites are

particularly fond of celebrating the arrival of warmer weather

by dining al fresco. According to the good folks at Webster,

al fresco is defined as “taking place or located in the open

air,” and there are few better ways to enjoy a good meal

than outside during beautiful weather. Here is a guide to a

few locally-owned restaurants that offer good food and the

opportunity to dine under the stars.

Pizzology 13190 Hazel Dell Parkway 317-844-2550 www.pizzologyindy.com

Housed in the former home of Good-fellas, Pizzology brings handcrafted, authentic Italian style pizza to Carmel. According to owner and chef Neil Brown, “This location presented us with an opportunity, as the pizza oven we needed was already here, but we also felt that this area was underserved and underestimated. The clientele here in Carmel is pretty sophisticated, and we felt like they were in need of something different.” Using local produce to make their cheeses and sausages, the chefs and owners of Pizzology aim to use the best ingre-dients that the seasons have to offer. The menu features an assortment of brick oven roasted pizzas and pastas. Pizzology’s current contribution to the local al fresco dining scene is their covered patio. Two large garage doors open the bar to the screened-in area. Perfect for those less-than-perfect spring days and cool nights, patrons can enjoy their delicious meal under the protective cover. The owners also have plans to landscape a back patio area, and hopefully hold cornhole tournaments there this summer. “Our intent is for the back area to be very family friendly, a place where the kids can come and play while mom and dad hang out and have a glass of wine,” says Brown.

Those familiar with the Broad Ripple location of Petite Chou will be pleased to find an expanded menu at the Clay Terrace location, including a fresh catch of the day, Indiana-raised bistro-style rotisserie chicken, and made to order crepes. The large outdoor seating area is reminiscent of a little Paris bistro, and during warm weather the area fills up quickly. Christina Pippen, Brand Manager for Patachou, notes that the patio area is dog-friendly, and treats and water bowls are offered to Petite Chou’s four-legged guests.

What’s a nice guy from landlocked Carmel, Indiana, doing in a yacht race like this? For Chris Palabrica the answer is simple – it’s the chance to fulfill a lifelong sportsman’s dream, and to share it with a sister who is now in remission following several bouts with cancer.

The competition in question is the 47th Biennial Newport Bermuda

Race, a 635-mile thrash from Newport, Rhode Island, across the Atlantic Ocean to Bermuda. Palabrica, 46, will pilot the first-ever craft from Indianapolis to enter the famous race that’s been held every other year in mid-June since 1906.

“My sister Theresa had talked about a sailing cruise through the Mediterranean,” explained Palabrica. “But in short order we agreed that taking on this nautical challenge was more to our liking. I’m very proud of her adventurous spirit. We can’t wait to sail!”

Palabrica’s home port is the Indianapolis Sailing Club at Geist Reservoir, although he keeps his boat, Sailor Bandido, on Lake Michigan, where final pre-race preparations are underway.

The sailboat takes its name from Palabrica’s son, Sayler.

The crew of six includes two other Indy area residents, Mike Crowell and Bob Solomon, as well as longtime sailing friends from Chicago and North Carolina.

The Newport Bermuda race typically takes three to six days of nonstop sailing, most of the time out of sight of land. It is the longest race by distance and the oldest yacht race in North America – an expensive undertaking, and not for the faint of heart.

“I’ve been sailing for 36 years and this always was a goal. The Bermuda Race is one of the top four international sailing races. There is an element of danger, but we’re fully prepared,” said Palabrica.

Carmel Resident to Pilot Sailboat in Famous Yacht Race

I’ve been sailing for 36 years and this always was a goal. The Bermuda Race is one of the top four international sailing races. There is an element of danger, but we’re fully prepared.– CHRIS PALABRICA, Carmel resident

Chris Palabrica, a member of the Indianapolis Sailing Club, will pilot the Sailor Bandido in the famous Newport Bermuda Race.

Page 13: At Carmel May 2010

Sailor Bandido will leave Newport on June 18, part of an armada of more than 180 crafts navigating the treacherous, unpredictable waters of the mid-Atlantic. Their tactical challenge will be navigating the Gulf Stream while clipping along at speeds of four to five knots per hour.

“I’ve been researching previous races, the various courses taken, and am confident that while we’ll be among the smallest craft taking part in the race, we’ll not be the slowest,” said Palabrica.

Indeed, he and the crew are confident of a good showing in their division, the St. David’s Lighthouse Group (for amateur sailors). Trophies will be awarded at an elegant ceremony at Government House, the residence of Bermuda’s governor.

Palabrica has teamed with the American Cancer Society and Indianapolis-based Little Red Door. The goal is to secure sponsorship dollars to offset expenses and for donation toward cancer treatment and prevention research. On Saturday, April 17, a fundraising event was held at the Indianapolis Sailing Club where well-wishers and benefactors signed one of the sails that will be hoisted aboard the Sailor Bandido for the race.

Did you know there is a local organization whose mission is to enhance the lives of mentally and physically challenged children throughout Indiana? Approximately 260,000 children in Indiana have some sort of special needs. And one local charity organization is doing their part to help

children who can’t help themselves.

Carmel resident Kurt Schepers, along with several other members, founded Helping Challenged Children (HCCI) in 2002 after they couldn’t get a local charter from a similar group. The purpose of the organization is to raise money for children who need durable medical goods that insurance won’t cover. “These kids need everything from wheelchair lifts and adaptive tricycles to hearing aid devices and financial assistance for leg braces,” said Schepers, who is vice president of the group. “We’ve helped kids throughout the entire state.”

HCCI conducts one fundraiser a year, which is a bowling event held at Woodland Bowl. “When we first started, we had 10 lanes,” Schepers explained. “This year we had 55 lanes. We are growing slowly, but steadily.” Schepers also said their goal is to reserve the entire bowling alley and fill all 80 lanes. “We want to make it more personable as well,” Schepers added. “At the event there are photos displayed of the kids and the equipment they received. “You can see directly where your donations are going. It’s spectacular.”

All of HCCI’s efforts and endeavors are on a volunteer basis. HCCI uses less than five percent of all funds raised for operating expenses. This leaves over 95% of all funds raised to grant back to the community

This year they raised around $20,000, amounting to nearly $800 per gift, which helped quite a few kiddos. Since the inception of the program, they have raised close to $100,000. Schepers added, “There is nothing better in this world than to get a thank you note and photo from these kids. To see the smile on their face, for things we take for granted, is just so rewarding.”

HCCI is managed by seven board members, about eight committee members and a handful of volunteers.

But this organization cannot operate without help. Help from people like you. That’s right, our readers! HCCI is always looking for people to get involved. “It is not a huge time commitment,” says Schepers. “Right now we are looking for people with backgrounds in accounting and marketing, as well as someone with philanthropic experience. Overall, we are in need of more members in general to help us grow.”

One thing that Schepers mentioned was that they are seeking someone well-known in the community to be “the face” behind the organization. “We need to increase awareness of our program,” Schepers adds. “Sometimes it takes someone who has ‘celebrity’ status.” If you know of anyone who might be interested in supporting the group, please contact HCCI.

“We just want to help as many kids as we can,” Schepers says. “And make a difference in these kids’ lives.” Schepers also said they will do what they can to help, regardless of how big or small the request. Applications can be found on their website at www.helpingchallengedchildren.org.

To help make a difference and get involved, visit helpingchallengedchildren.org for more information. You may also contact Kurt Schepers directly at (317) 816-1330.

For Rima and Joseph Matly, both born in Lebanon (the country, not the Indiana town), frugal and responsible use of resources is a part of running the day-to-day operation of their local family business, Corporate Printing.

Joseph and Rima came to the U.S. at the ages of 16 and 4 respectively. When opportunity presented itself, even though they had two small kids on their hands (George, a year and a half old, and Samantha, three and a half years old), the Matlys decided to take a risk and start their own printing business. They have been running a successful local family operation for over 12 years. The company serves most small business needs, from print, graphic design and layout, to direct mail and fulfillment.

Quite some time ago, the Matlys decided to invest in new digital print technology. The decision was not driven by desire to market their operations as environmentally friendly. It was driven by the desire to serve their customers better. “Our main focus is our customers, and how we can better service them,” says Joseph.

As it turned out, the new technology not only streamlined the turn-around time and cut cost, it was also a better choice for the environment. No more hazardous chemicals and wasting water in the shop. No more wasting scrap paper. “What we have is the process. It did not just happen overnight. We’ve always recycled paper and cardboard boxes,” says Matly. Corporate Printing prints 90% of their products on recycled paper. The company uses soy-based ink in most of its products.

The Matlys do not use buzzwords such as

“corporate social responsibility” when talking about their business and employees. They just treat them right every day. “Most of my people have been with me for over 10 years. They love their work and have years of combined knowledge. I feel comfortable saying that my people will get it done, because they will get it done,” says Joseph.

Although Corporate Printing does not hold a green certification, it seems they are on a track to achieve it. It has become evident that responsible usage of resources and respectful treatment of people are a natural common sense approach for the Matley family on a daily basis.

I was in a meeting last week with a client, and we were talking about new “apps.” Since I’ve never downloaded an app, and barely know what one is, I did what any professional would do. I nodded and pretended like I knew what he was talking about.

But my confidence was short-lived, as he decided to show me how to download one in particular, and on my own phone, no less. You can imagine my embarrassment as he reached over to study my cell phone, and broke out into barking laughter.

“This is what you use? How long have you had this, eight years?” As I tried to hide inside my Starbuck’s Grande, my face turned an attractive shade of watermelon, and I chuckled, “Well, yes, I’m due for a new one. And by the way, I’ve only had this for two years.” Ahem.

So off I went the very next day to the cell phone store. As I explained to my husband, “Honey, I can’t deny this century any longer. This mama is gettin’ back in the game.”

I knew I needed a Smart Phone, because everyone who knows anything about cell phones had told me so. And hey, if I’m investing in new technology, I’m not wasting money on an ignorant one. As I entered enemy territory, I boldly walked up to the counter and told the saleslady, “I’m ready to make an upgrade,” and I proudly slapped my flip-up down with a smack.

“Which one?” she inquired, as she devilishly lifted up her right eyebrow and smirked. I think she was on to me. I had to keep up the façade. “I just can’t decide. Why don’t you walk me through them and highlight the features.”

After listening to 14.2 minutes of descriptive features about cell phones, I closed my eyes and pointed. “I’ll take that one, and I want it in purple because I understand the importance of color.” This insight did not win her over.

Thirty minutes later, after putting up a second mortgage on my house and handing over my diamond bracelet, I was safely in my car and staring at the keypad. Now what?

I soon figured out why my new phone is called Smart. I had to pass an IQ test and undergo oral exams on my speaker phone before I was allowed to make a call. I flipped through the instruction book and saw nothing about having to provide proof of an advanced degree from MIT. Whew! And then my new phone began to talk.

“If you’d like to make a call, press pound, sing “God Bless America” and perform the first five minutes of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video.” Huh? God Bless America is not in my range.

“To listen to new messages, please enter your password and recite the second chapter of The Iliad in Latin.” Darn. I took French in college. I’m doomed.

After three days of tutoring from my neighbor’s eighth-grader, I finally found out how to send a text message and access my email. I felt like I had climbed Mount Everest. I was so proud. Now if I can just figure out how to download an app!

The Bonds of Money

We all know our government likes to spend money like a drunken sailor, but a lot of us don’t like to think about how dangerous that can be. We read about $trillions here and $trillions there, and our gut tells us this is going to be hell for our kids and grandkids, but it doesn’t feel like a tangible problem today. Here is a snapshot of the situation and

why it can represent a problem for your portfolio right now.

In 2008, after the housing market slow down caught up with the banks, the U.S. government decided it was smart to throw an unprecedented amount of money into the system in order to save us from ourselves. They borrowed some of this money from people and governments through the sale of bonds. The rest they just printed in the basement. If you bought a U.S. government bond in the last two years, then you helped support some of this crazy spending. A simple economic law states that the more you borrow, the higher your borrowing costs will be. In other words, if you already

have a lot of debt, then you will pay a higher interest rate to borrow more money. That is our government today.

Okay, so we know our government is going to pay higher rates because we know it needs to borrow a lot more money in the next few years. As interest rates go higher, the value of the bonds they sold before (the stuff we own now) drops. U.S. government bonds generally control the direction of bond prices across the board, except for junk and some cor-porate. The bottom line is that investors are going to start to lose a lot of money in the bond market, and it is because of the massive debt load of the U.S. government.

On April 17, 2010 Northview Christian Life Church held their first official services in their beautiful new auditorium. I had the opportunity to check out the new auditorium and talk to the Lead Pastor of Northview, Steve Poe, during the Grand Opening Celebration.

Northview already has one of the biggest facilities in Carmel, so you may be asking yourself, as I did, why they built the new auditorium. According to Pastor Poe, “For the last 10 years we have been adding services to accommodate the increased attendance, but there finally came a point when we needed to have a bigger space. But we didn’t just want a bigger box; we felt like the space was way too important to only be concerned with how many people would fit inside. We wanted to make sure we were being sensitive to how the space would impact people spiritually as well as reinforce our values as a church.” He continued by saying, “Our mission statement here at Northview church is “Connecting people with God and connecting

people with people. And therefore, we believe that creating environments that are inviting helps us to carry out that mission.”

The 51,000 square-foot auditorium has enough seats for 2,070 people. The intention of the design was not to give Northview the biggest auditorium in Hamilton County, but to provide a place to better serve the city and citizens of Carmel. Pastor Poe says, “The increased capacity will give us plenty of room to accommodate more of our friends

and neighbors. The space is the largest venue in Hamilton County, so it will give us plenty of room to grow. Our heart has always been to invite the community onto our property.” Northview recently demonstrated how they are going to use the new facility to serve the community. Pastor Poe mentioned that over spring break they opened their doors all week and showed children’s movies for free. They had a few thousand parents and children take advantage of the experience.

Technology and innovation played a major role in the construction. Poe says, “People are very visual, which is why we use creative ways to communicate and strengthen our message with technology, music, the arts, sophisticated lighting and video. This is why we felt the state-of-the-art audio and video technology was an important part of the space. While some may come with the idea that church is boring, we want them to discover that’s not the case. We want them to discover that Christians are real people who laugh and have a good time together and appreciate excellence.”

As I stepped onto the Northview campus I felt an amazing level of excitement by the people and staff of Northview. When I asked Pastor Poe about how excited he was that the

project was complete, he said, “For three and a half years we have been praying, dreaming, planning, preparing and working toward this building, so to see it finally completed is very thrilling.” He continued by saying, “And while it is exciting to have the space finished, we realize it’s just the beginning of the next chapter God has for us as a church. We want the people in this community to know

that we genuinely do care about them. We want to be good neighbors. We’re being intentional about different ways we can reach out to the people in this community.”

Northview invites you to check them out either online at www.nvcl.org or in person at 12900 Hazel Dell Parkway Carmel, Indiana 46033.

Turn on the television, open any newspaper or magazine, or surf the Web, and you’ll find the same information about the real estate market. It’s tough. Although there have been slight improvements, it will continue to be tough for the next few years. Everyone knows it, especially if you’re one of the many people trying to sell a home right now.

It seems, though, that one Realtor has adapted to the current market conditions –

Allen Williams, managing broker at ERA Real Estate Links in Fishers. The reality is that realty has been going well for Williams, who posted his best year of the last 16 in 2009.

Allen believes so much in Fishers and Geist real estate that he just opened a new retail office space right next to Handel’s Ice Cream on 116th Street in Fishers. Williams says the 1300 sq. ft. space is just perfect for his staff of five.

“My wife and I were at Handel’s last summer eating ice cream,” explains Williams. “We noticed the space next door and decided to jump on it. We wanted something that would allow people to see us.”

Williams is taking advantage of the captive audience that hangs out at Handel’s. A 50” plasma TV screen hangs in their front window displaying information about homes for

sale, and new benches adorn the sidewalks for those who want to enjoy their ice cream outdoors.

“We feel we’ve taken a fresh approach to our customer service,” said Williams. “We want to make our environment as comfortable as possible.”

The long-time Fishers resident embraces out-of-the-box marketing ideas and the technology side of real estate, which has helped him and his team to sell homes quickly and close to list price.

While Williams is already exceeding the average sales price on homes in 2010 as compared to 2009, he expects the real estate market will continue to struggle until 2011. His advice to potential sellers: “Make sure your home is in good condition and priced accordingly. There’s too much competition right now to not be on top of your game.”

Williams certainly seems to be at the top of his game, enjoying the role he plays in helping Fishers and Geist residents realize their dream of investment or moving up in home ownership.

My Gym Children’s Fitness Center to Sponsor Sold Out Geist 5K RaceFor the first time since the inaugural run in 2008, the Geist 5K race has been sponsored by the Fishers-based My Gym Children’s Fitness Center. Under the terms of the agreement, My Gym Children’s Fitness Center will have their logo on all the 5K participant bibs, on the start/finish lines, and their owner Joe Trainor will be the official starter of the 5K race.

“I have a passion for family fitness, especially when it comes to our area youth,” said Trainor. “We wanted to get more involved locally, so we felt the St.Vincent Geist Half Marathon & 5K Presented by Comcast was a great way for us to help a great cause.”

During the first three years, the Geist 5K has sold out with nearly 50% of those registered participants

coming from Geist area schools. Proceeds from the event are donated back to area schools to promote health and wellness programs.

“In talking with Joe (Trainor), we found that My Gym Children’s Fitness Center and the Geist Half Marathon Inc. share a common mission,” said Tom Britt, president and founding board member of the Geist Half Marathon. “We are excited to have their financial support, but even more importantly, have their community support to evangelize healthy lifestyles to our area youth.”
