Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind

In the ancient Jewish world, blindness was not just a physical ailment. In popular thought it carried a terrible stigma. This arose from a false interpretation of the law of Moses, which stated that people who were blind or lame could not fight in the army of God’s people. There was good reason for this: soldiers who cannot move fast or see the enemy are not going to be much help to their comrades. However an extreme interpretation of the rule concluded wrongly that anyone who could not fight in God’s army could never enter God’s kingdom. The next step was to class them as sinners, and that in turn led to them being refused work and reduced to begging.

This view was never officially endorsed, but its popular acceptance is seen when Jesus’ disciples ask him a question: was this man born blind because a sin he committed before he was born—or was it because of his parents’ sins? Jesus emphatically denies that the man’s blindness was caused by anyone’s sin: on the contrary, this man will make God’s works visible.

This passage is long and complicated, but we hear of a formerly blind man—notice how briefly the miracle itself is described: over and done with in a couple of sentences—who becomes increasingly full of life and who very soon teaches the Pharisees the ways of God. They meanwhile regress further and further into spiritual darkness. As the man moves towards Jesus, the light of the world, the Pharisees move further away, into deeper darkness. Pope Francis said that” every person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral—and not simply an economic—act.” Are you buying and eating, or giving away Easter chocolate this year? It is estimated that up to 30 million people are trapped in slavery globally. The United Nations esti-mates that one in every three victims of human trafficking is a child. Much of the chocolate we consume in Australia is made with cocoa beans picked by

children, many of whom have been enslaved. Action : Go to the ACRATH website https://

Social Justice Group This Sunday we ask you to support two initiatives 1. Sign the petition to make our border with Timor-Leste both fair and just. Take a copy of the petition home an ask

friends and family to sign - the more signatures we can get, the more impressed our parliamentarians will be and the better our chances of success. They can be dropped at the office or given to on us.

2. Take a black ribbon from the table at the back to wear on each Tuesday until Pentecost to remind ourselves and others of the terrible fate of those refuges in detention centres—in limbo—in Manus and Nauru.

The Sisters of St Joseph “ Josephites for Justice invite us to join them by wearing a ribbon each “Tuesday Morning” until Pentecost Sunday. Why? To mourn for the innocent victims locked up. Locked up for us. For Australian fear. View abciview Australian Story 13th March ,one such story of one innocent victim seeking Asylum in Australia.
