Spring is just around the corner, and most of us are beginning think about the upcoming golf season. So it seems like perfect timing to devote the monthly “From the Boardroom” column to the Golf and Grounds Committee.
I am sure the first topic on everyone’s mind is the progress of the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) project on the West Course. I am happy to report that the project is making satisfactory progress. Mike Null provides additional details on this work in his column elsewhere in this newsletter.
In the recent Global Golf Advisors (CGA) survey, our golf courses and supporting operations registered a high satisfaction rating with our members, exceeding the norm for comparable clubs. This is a tremendous tribute to leadership of Ryan Roy and Mike Null and efforts of their staffs. Well done! That’s not to say there are not opportunities for improvement. Bag drop services, club storage, and club cleaning received the lowest ratings in the golf operations category. In his newsletter column, Ryan Roy introduces a new addition to our Professional Staff, Matt Love, who will be charged with improving the quality of these services. The declining quality of the cart paths on the West Course was also cited in the survey results. The plan all along has been to address the cart paths once the MSD work and accompanying course changes are complete. You can expect to see this work to begin in the fall of this year. The other significant golf course improvement opportunity identified in the survey is the quality of bunker sand. The Golf and Ground Committee started working with Mike Null last year to develop a strategy for addressing the bunkers on both courses. The will continue to be high on the committee’s priority list this year. The changes to the 15th hole, once fully completed later in the year, will trigger the need for a re-evaluation of the course rating and slope. The current plan is to use this opportunity to have both courses re-rated by the USGA. Lastly, as you venture out for your first rounds of the year, we hope you enjoy the new fleet of E.Z. Go RXV golf carts, featuring automatic braking and a new battery that generates more hill climbing power with more energy efficiency. As always, the Golf and Grounds Committee welcomes your feedback regard the golf courses, practice facilities and Golf Shop Operations. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any of the other committee members with your thoughts and questions. See you on the course! John Mitchell

With the coming of Spring, and yes, it is coming, attention turns to outside activities, starting with Golf. The MSD Project on #15 West is wrapping up and Golf Course Superintendent Mike Null and his staff will begin to put course conditions back to normal, depending on a little help from the weather. Spring is also significant as the time that people start to consider joining a private club to enjoy the many amenities that it offers. We have not only a new classification, the Sport classification, but also a very attractively priced Legacy and Intermediate classification. The Sport classification was a recommendation that came from our strategic planning group, Global Golf Advisors, and it offers unlimited play on the East Course, 6 opportunities to play the West Course, and all the other vast and diverse activities that Norwood offers throughout the year. This type of membership has been successful in other parts of the country, offering the novice golfer the chance to become better acquainted with the game while affording the golfer who doesn’t play as much as he or she used to the opportunity to remain at the Club and still play at a reduced rate. We think that the Sport classification, along with the revised rates in the Legacy and Intermediate classifications, in conjunction with the still very popular Discovery Membership, will result in a banner new member year. But we need you help, your referrals, and your input to make it the success that we want. Contact Membership Directory Katie Dooley or myself with questions or comments on potential membership. -Easter at Norwood: It’s early this Leap Year so make your reservations before it sneaks up on you. Easter Sunday is the traditional full blown brunch buffet while Easter Saturday is a smaller but still nice Children’s Buffet. The Easter Bunny will be at both brunches. -Crustaceans & BBall: Every Ala Carte Crustacean ordered is also an entry into the drawing for tickets to the NCAA Men’s Basketball first round hosted by St. Louis March 18-20. More information on how to win is in this month’s newsletter. -NGF Facts: Some recently released golf facts from the National Golf Foundation: 1. Millennials, those roughly 18-34 year olds, are very attracted to golf
and account for nearly a quarter of the US golfing population. 2. Golfers choice of where to play is not about price – more than half of
today’s golfers chose course conditions, specifically conditions of the greens, as the deciding factor of where to play.
3. Likewise, course playability was another important decision making factor. The length of the rough, pin placements, tee location, and course length were all important.
Don’t forget our St. Patrick’s Day Celebration on Saturday, March 5th – enjoy your club. John

The lightbulbs at Norwood have gotten an upgrade in
2015 and it’s a makeover that everyone will be excited
about. There were a total of 1,011 LED lightbulbs
installed in the Norwood Clubhouse that changed the
wattage used from 59,160 watts down to 8,380 watts,
roughly. Isn’t it incredible how one small change in
lightbulbs can change the amount of energy an entire
building is using?

FOUR MYTHS ABOUT STRENGTH TRAINING WITH WOMEN 1. I'LL GET BIG AND BULKY WHEN I LIFT WEIGHTS.
On average, women have 30 percent less muscle fiber
to develop than men, which means it would be much
more difficult for a woman to get bulky than it would be
for a man. High repetitions and low weight is a great
standard to follow.
2. I JUST HAVE TO DO CARDIO TO LOSE WEIGHT. Cardio is great, and we all need it to live a healthy
lifestyle. The heart is a muscle and needs to be worked
like all the others. However, when it comes to weight loss,
cardio alone doesn't always help you lose weight and
keep it off. Muscle burns more calories than any other
bodily tissues, meaning the more muscle you have, the
faster your metabolism will be.
3. SPOT REDUCTION WORKS. Unfortunately, doing hundreds of side crunches isn't the
secret to making your waist smaller. Your body is
genetically predisposed to storing fat in certain
locations. When you begin to lose overall weight, you'll
lose weight in certain locations more than others, and
this is simply due to genetics.
4. A GOOD WORKOUT TAKES TOO LONG. 2 to 3 times a week 20 to 30 minutes is ideal amount of
time for a workout. Just concentrate on the large muscle
group exercises with a small portion of workout for
cardio.
Conquer your fears through exercise. These are great
examples of how to stay fit and get fit, without the worry.

Spring is just around the corner according to Punxsutawney Phil!!! Hopefully…March will come in – AND go
out - like a lamb. Look for the first Spring shipments to arrive during the month of April. During the month of
March, stop in and shop….Markdowns will be taken on current fashions for both men and ladies in order to
make way for new merchandise!!!
We will be featuring many of our current lines during the coming season – and as always, we will be bringing
in some new additions. As a reminder, don’t forget to mark Demo Day, April 23rd on your calendar. Everyone
in the Pro Shop is excited about the beginning of a new golf season at Norwood. Enjoy the rest of this wintery
weather – AND get ready for warmer days ahead!!!
-As always, hope to see you in the Pro Shop soon! -Kathryn “Kat”, Pro Shop Merchandiser
It’s that time of year again to start thinking GOLF! In just over a month we will be in the midst of a new golf season. Please keep your eye on the club calendar for all the April Member Events… April 13 – Ladies Get Acquainted Day (WGA 18 and 9 Hole Groups) April 14 – Men’s Opening Day April 21 – Senior Opening Day April 23 – Demo Day April 26 – LEGS Opening Day April 28 – Member 3-Guest As we begin the new golf season there are two big rules and handicap changes that you need to be aware of. First of all, you have probably heard that USGA Rule 14-1b “anchoring of the club” has gone into effect and will be adhered to in all member events and for handicap posting. Also speaking of handicap posting, you may no longer post any scores from rounds of golf played by yourself. You must have at least one witness to your round to be eligible for GHIN Posting. For more information about either subject please feel free to contact one of your Golf Professionals. For the second year in a row we are proud to announce that we had a caddy awarded the Chick Evans Scholarship from the Western Golf Association. Congratulations to Jeffrey Naumann, as his hard work on and off the course has awarded him a full ride scholarship to the University of Missouri. Thanks again to all of our Par Club members for help making this possible. Finally, you will see a new face in the Golf Shop. Please help me welcome Matt Love to our Professional Staff. Matt is a PGA Member and graduate of Eastern Kentucky University where he majored in Business and Golf Management. Most recently Matt was the acting Head Professional at Waynesboro Country Club in Waynesboro, Virginia. Matt’s main focus will be the management of the Outside Services. This will include the daily management of the bag room and staff, overseeing the driving range and golf carts. Matt’s primary goal will be to improve the overall quality of service that the bag room will provide. Other duties will also include normal golf shop duties as well as private instruction and junior golf. We are excited to have Matt onboard and please stop by and welcome him to the Norwood family. We look forward to another wonderful season at the club with you and your family! Ryan Roy, PGA Head Golf Professional

I don’t know about you but, winter has taken
a bite out of how much golf I have played.
When I can’t play at Norwood I’m usually at
the bar talking golf. Awhile back we were discussing the rules of golf and some of the changes that are being made. It
got me thinking about how the rules developed. So, I did a little research and came up with what I thought was
interesting...hope you enjoy it.
There must have been rules known to golfers dating back to the origins of the game. Other-wise, how
could players have squared off in competition? What those rules were, nobody knows. At least not until
the mid-18th Century, when the first known written rules of golf were put into writing by the Gentlemen
Golfers of Leith, now the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers based at Muirfield. The rules were
written for the Annual Challenge for the Edinburgh Silver Club in 1744.
There were 13 of them, and here they are (with a few explanatory comments in parentheses). Note how many of these
rules survive today:
1. "You must tee your ball within a club's length of the hole." (A diameter of two club lengths. Teeing grounds are
now defined as two club lengths in depth.)
2. "Your tee must be on the ground." (Tees, back in these days, consisted of little pyramids of sand.)
3. "You are not to change the ball which you strike off the tee." (Look at that - the "one ball condition way back then!
Actual-ly, holing out with the same ball with which you teed off - with a few exceptions - is in Rule 15-1)
4. "You are not to remove stones, bones or any break club for the sake of playing your ball, except upon the fair
green, and that only within a club's length of the ball." (Hmmm, bones? Loose impediments, Rule 23)
5. "If your ball comes among watter, or any wattery filth, you are at liberty to take out your ball and bringing it
behind the hazard and teeing it, you may play it with any club and allow your adversary a stroke for so getting out
your ball." (Origin of the 1-stroke penalty for a ball in a water hazard. Rule 26)
6. "If your balls be found anywhere touching one another you are to lift the first ball till you play the last." (Rule 22-2)
7. "At holling you are to play your ball honestly at the hole, and not to play upon your adversary's ball, not lying in
your way to the hole." (Don't do something petty such as trying to hit your opponent's ball with your own. It's OK
in croquet, not in golf.)
8. "If you should lose your ball, by its being taken up, or any other way, you are to go back to the spot where you
struck last and drop another ball and allow your adversary a stroke for the misfortune." (Stroke plus distance,
Rule 27-1.)
9. “No man at holling his ball is to be allowed to mark his way to the hole with his club or anything else." (Now
incorporated in Rule 8-2.)
10. "If a ball be stopp'd by any person, horse, dog, or any thing else, the ball so stopp'd must be played where it
lyes." (Deflection by an outside agency. Play it as it lies.Rule 19-1)
11. "If you draw your club in order to strike and proceed so far in the stroke as to be bringing down your club, if then
your club should break in any way, it is to be accounted a stroke." (Definition of stroke)
12. "He whose ball lyes farthest from the hole is obliged to play first." (Virtually unchanged after all this time.Rule 10)
13. "Neither trench, ditch, or dyke made for the preservation of the links, nor the Scholars' Holes or the soldiers' lines
shall be ac-counted a hazard but the ball is to be taken out, teed and play'd with any iron club." (The first written
rules also include the first local rule, for what we would now describe as ground under repair.)
As always, if you have any handicap questions, send me an email at [email protected] or
stop by the pro shop.

As we head into March I will give you an update to the progress of the MSD project
through our West golf course. The contractor doing the installation is pretty close to
on target for getting off the property as was planned. The wet winter and not having
to finish grade wet soil has not hampered their large digging equipment. For our
crew, getting a finish grade has been difficult. Ever since the big rain in early
December, the loose dirt has had the consistency of porridge. You can barely walk
on it, let alone put a piece of grading equipment on it. Several attempts resulted in
stuck, buried equipment. During this time we did as much infra-structure work as we
could. Hoping when the weather breaks we can fly on the grading.
The last week of February brought us some really good warm and dry weather. We
were able to get a lot of the grading done in the area of #15 approach and fairway.
This is good, as soon as sod is available we can start buttoning this end of the project up. The re-contoured
fairway and bunkers really look good.
Going forward, we will try to get #15 open in some form as early as possible. Fifteen will have to be played
as a par 3 or par 4 for a time while the fairway is being finished and tees are being re-built. We will have
some temporary paths around #12 green and on #15 until it is dry enough to get asphalt trucks in.
Winter could have been kinder to us, but, we are making progress. The holes are taking shape, and I am
excited about the finished project.
-Mike Null, Grounds Superintendent
