Watch out for that word “but”
Things were going well for David; the Lord prospered him in so many ways, giving him his heart’s desire, because he gave the Lord His heart’s desire. Then we read this passage from the Bible, “It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem” (2 Samuel 11.1).
Even if you have never read the Bible before, as you read the story of David you come to this verse, and you know that something is about to happen. Let us guard ourselves that such sentences may not be said about us. DR
Jesus wept over a city
You know that the shortest verse in the Bible is, “Jesus wept,” when He wept over the death of a dear friend and saw how people grieved over him. Jesus also wept over the city of Jerusalem, “Now as
He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it…” (Luke 19.41).
Over the centuries, the Lord ministered to the beloved city, but the city rejected Him and His prophets repeatedly. Finally, the end of Jerusalem as the cherished city of God approached, and Jesus knew what would happen to the city, as He sent Roman armies against it.
What does Jesus think of your city? What do you think of your city? What are you doing to promote righteousness in it? DR

The Wisdom of George Washington: On Present Governing “The basis of our political systems is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government. But the constitution which at any time exists, till changed by an explicit and
authentic act of the whole people, is sacredly obligatory upon all.” “Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake…” (1 Peter 2.13–14).
While You Are Gone Remember that the church still has financial obligations. Either leave your contribution with someone to put in the tray on Sunday, or make it up when you return.
Church History 304: The Christians of Saragossa, Spain, undergo severe persecution as troops of the Roman prefect Dacian kill eighteen men. Others who die around this time are Encratis, a woman who reproached Dacian to his face, for which he ordered tortures so severe that her liver was pulled part way out of her chest. During persecution that same year, all Christians are ordered out of the city. As they arrive at the city gates, Dacian’s troops slaughter every one. 1775: John Adams reminded us: “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.” 1957: Baba Ezra Nikki is posted to Majinga among the Kambari people of
Niger State, Nigeria. He was a man broken by the things that break the heart of Jesus.
