Choosing Sunglasses

For Sunny Weather From: Nurse Marilyn

Remember you can always check the weather forecast on WKBW First Alert

Weather. Please vote for Tuscarora School on WBKW Andy Parker’s Weather

Machine Contest at: www.weathermachine.com

As you slather on sunscreen to protect your skin this summer, don’t forget

sunglasses to protect your eyes. The same harmful rays that damage skin can also

increase your risk of developing eye problems, such as cataracts –a clouding of the

eye’s lens that develops over the years.

In the short term, people who spend long hours on the beach or in the snow

without adequate eye protection can develop photokeratitis, reversible sunburn of

the cornea. When sunlight reflects off of snow, sand and water, it further increases

exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. These invisible high energy rays lie just

beyond the violet end of the visible light spectrum.

Everyone is at risk for eye damage from the sun year round. The risk is greatest

from about 10 am to 4 pm. Fisherman, farmers, beach-goers, and others who spend

time in the sun for extended periods are at the highest risk.

UV radiation in sunlight is commonly divided into UVA and UVB, and your

sunglasses should block both forms. Don’t assume that you get more UV

protection with pricier sunglasses or glasses with a darker tint. Look for a label that

specifically states that the glasses offer 99 to 100 percent UV protection.

Sunglasses should be dark enough to reduce glare, but not dark enough to

distort colors and affect the recognition of traffic signals. Tint is a matter of

personal preference. For best color perception, lenses that are neutral grey, amber,

brown or green are recommended. People who wear contact lenses that offer UV

protection should still wear sunglasses.

Children also should wear sunglasses. They shouldn’t be toy sunglasses, but

real sunglasses that indicate the UV protection level just as with adults.

Even with sunglasses with 100% UV protection, light still enters from the sides

& over the top. If you are in the at risk category –consider sunglasses that wrap all

the way around the temple & a hat with a 3 inch brim can help block sunlight that

comes in from overhead.

Unplug and Read! PARP 2015

The Theme-This year’s PARP theme is inspired by the book

Doug Unplugged by Dan Yaccarino. In the book, a robot is

plugged in each day, but one day he unplugs and discovers all of

the wonderful things the world has to offer.

Did you know? Too much time screen time (time spent using

computers, video games, phones and video games) can lead to

poor school performance, behavioral problems, trouble sleeping, obesity and less

time for play. 1998-2015 Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research

The Challenge-During PARP (May 11-22), students will be challenged to unplug

each day and read or listen to someone read. Students will fill out a form each

week and turn it in to Mrs. Diegelman or Mrs. Brock.

Events-There are many exciting and fun ways to unplug and enjoy books and other

fun activities during PARP:

3 Energy-Boosting Snacks To Help Get You Through The Day By Justin Caba

Here are three energy-boosting snacks packed with fiber and protein to keep you going throughout the workday.

We’ve all been there before — that midday slump when all of our hard work for the past couple of hours really starts to weigh us down. We debate over our fourth cup of coffee or maybe go straight for the sugar-laden energy drink, even though we know that’s probably not the best decision for our health. Instead of struggling with that sudden urge to use your desk as a pillow, reach for a low-calorie, energy-boosting snack that will give you the strength to power through the day. Whether you’re looking for that extra rush of energy before the gym, working with your hands all day, or trying to avoid turning your cubicle into a bedroom, here are four healthy snacks that will help you sustain energy throughout the day: 1. Greek yogurt with granola By now, we have all heard how nutritious protein-packed Greek yogurt is, but on its own it can

leave a bitter and almost sour taste in your mouth. To make plain white Greek yogurt more palatable, add some granola for

flavoring. Not only will it bring a little taste to your probiotic snack, but the fiber found in granola’s oats can help you feel fuller

for longer. Combine that with the 18 grams of protein found in a 6-oz. cup of Greek yogurt and your midday snack containing

around 200 calories should hold you over until dinnertime. No need to worry about Greek yogurt’s sugar content. All of the

sugar found in Greek yogurt naturally occurs from milk.

2. Fruit with peanut butter- Fruit by itself may not seem too enticing, but add 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter and this

nutrient-filled snack can be just as delicious as it is healthy. A lot of people think about peanut butter and stress over the word

BUTTER. A healthy serving of peanut butter can actually provide you with a good amount of fiber, potassium, and protein,

which is why many health professionals regard it as a heart-healthy snack. The best part about this option is that you can mix

and match which fruit you would like to add. From apple slices to bananas to strawberries, this midday snack can satisfy any

palate. Just make sure you’re not going overboard with the peanut butter. Measure out 2 tablespoons of Skippy Natural peanut

butter for the perfect balance of calories, fat, protein, and other nutrients.

3. Vegetables with Hummus- If vegetables slathered in ranch dressing is your idea of a healthy snack it’s time to rethink your

options. You got the vegetables part right, but turn around a bottle of ranch salad dressing and you’ll find it's packed with

calories, saturated fat, and sodium. Try switching out ranch dressing for hummus to healthy up your midday snack. Combining

chickpeas, olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic, and tahini paste, you can’t go wrong with baby carrots, celery, and sliced peppers

alongside 2 tablespoons of fresh hummus. High in both fiber and protein, hummus can help with satisfying your appetite and

sustaining energy when your work comes bearing down on you.

Mrs. Belter from Univera Healthcare visited our school on Monday to talk to the kids about how important it is to wash your hands often. She even showed us how many germs are on our hands!

Green & Clean Code When I eat, cough, sneeze, or play

I promise to keep my hands clean every day I may be germy and just can’t see it.

Keeping hands green & clean…that’ll beat it!

Fourth graders continue to review for the upcoming New York State Science test. This week used our new laptop computers to conduct some experiments with magnets. Students learned that unlike poles attract each other and like poles repel (push away) each other. Some objects such as nickel and iron are ferromagnetic (strongly attracted to magnets) while other objects such as wood or plastic are not attracted to magnets at all.

We have begun a new book club in ELA! The novel is Holes by Louis Sachar.

Although many students remember a movie by that name, most agreed they

didn’t really understand it. That is why we have books! They will read and

discover all the interesting and surprising details, riddles, twists and turns,

that make this such an enjoyable story! When we finish, students may still be

disappointed by the movie, because it won’t live up to their creative

imaginations used in the reading of Holes!

Along with reading about digging “Holes” students

have been identifying rocks, minerals, and

defining the rock cycle. We use BrainPop which is

on cloud network to watch movies, play games, complete activities, and

even take short quizzes to confirm what we’ve

learned!

Survival Camp-out Sixth grade is currently away camping at Letchworth State Park to test their survival skills. All the Earth Spirit activities that take place from Pre-K on lead up to this point. All the students in attendance are taking their jobs very seriously and are working together as a team. They look great!! If you see Jordan Smith around the community, see how HE “survived”. ( I’m guessing very well since this is his THIRD time chaperoning.) Pictures will follow. Nya:weh to all families for making sure your child was well prepared. Nya:weh to a Mrs. Weinholtz for her support and knowledge to this trip. A special nay:weh goes out to Mr. Schiffert for always making Letchworth and the well-being of our students his top priority!

Culture Night

Mary Jemison Visual Literacy

Grand Council

Fourth grade longhouse models are due the morning of Culture Night, May 21st. in

the culture room. All fourth grade students should have brought home an

information package about longhouses. Only two more week-ends until the

models are due.

Culture Night is Thursday, May 21st, from 6 to 8 PM in the school gym. If you are

interested in setting up a table please contact the office at 215-3670 or culture

room at 215-3675. Don’t forget all tables should reflect something with our

culture, language, history, etc.

Sixth grade is at Letchworth having an

incredible experience. Students were

well prepared for the visit to Gardeau

Flats where Mary Jemison lived during a

very tumultuous time in Seneca

Haudenosaunee history.

Fifth grade continues to learn about the

Seminole people in what became Florida.

In addition to reading and discussing

history we discussed what visual literacy

is. Students are encouraged to be very

observant of historical etchings, drawings,

paintings, pictographs, etc.

Grand Council of the Confederacy has been the topic in grade three. Students learned

how the pegs on the condolence cane represent the fifty original chiefs who sit in Grand

Council.
