ASUM SENATE MINUTES September 8, 1993 Mt. Sentinel Room

Chair Flanigan called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. Present: Betts,Flanigan, Hoffman, Arnold, Bear Don't Walk, Boyle, Brown, Crowe, Farooqui, Fast, Grant, Gregory, Hammond, Katzman, Kuntz, Lindsay, Mather, Panasuk, Redenius, Rogers, Schlosser, Yellow Robe.The minutes of the September 1 meeting were approved as written.Public Comment*Chuck Wilson, Director of Alumni Development, encouraged any one interested in a new fraternity to attend a reception in the UC Lounge tonight from 7-9. He will be in Missoula for two weeks for consultation. ★Gilbert Jensen, student, presented Betts with a petition containing approximately 700 signatures asking for Betts' resignation.★Andy Dannerbeck, student, requested Senate support for his place on the University Affairs Committee.★Ross Best, commented on procedural matters.★Eathan Guler, student, gave information on the Genesis Foundation, a "think tank" organization that he hopes to form on campus. He encouraged the Senate to move ahead on issues.★Jeff Cable encouraged the Senate to move forward.★Alain Burrese, student, commented on the honors siting resolution and felt the majority of the students were not against the siting on the oval.★Adam Benton urged Senators to be respectful and unite.★Students seeking seats on committees introduced themselves and asked for student support.Vice-President's Reporta. Flanigan presented a slate of nominees for committees which was

approved by Senate (Exhibit A).b. Flanigan reminded Senators of the attendance policy - three absences

are grounds for dismissal; Senators need to notify her before a meeting if they seek an excused absence; leaving a meeting without stating a reason is considered an unexcused absence.Flanigan commented that she feels she is where she should be (Vice­President) and has confidence in her abilities in the position. She stated she would not have a level of confidence in the presidential seat and therefore would not be interested in moving into it.

Senator Katzman called for a quorum roll call. Fifteen out of 21 voting members were present to constitute up a quorum (2/3 of the voting members).President's Report

a. Ben Reed was nominated by Betts for the Senate vacancy and the Senate approved, whereupon Reed took his seat on the Senate.

b. Keith Glaes, Campus Recreation, reported on how the campus recreation fee the students approved has been working since its implementation and how Campus Recreation has been going since the change to semesters.

c. Jerry Furniss, UTU, was unable to attend.d. Interim Commissioner of Higher Education Jeff Baker will meet with

students Thursday, September 9, from 1-2 p.m. in UC 114.

An invitation will be sent to Senators, Greeks, ASUM-recognized groups and dorm RAs to attend the leadership conference Saturday, September 25, in the UC.The MSU student government will support the lawsuit against the Natelson petition and is discussing financially how much they will contribute. Natelson is suing the Board of Regents for allowing student activity fee money to be spent on the lawsuit.Betts announced his decision to stay in the presidency, citing his desire to lead as promised when he ran for office.

Senator Schlosser called for a quorum roll call. Fourteen out of 22 voting members were present, which did not constitute a quorum.The meeting was adjourned at 7:02.
