Supplies and Environment

Supplies for reprocessing are readily available:

PPE, as defined by HLD manufacturer and facility procedures.

Pre-Clean/Drying Supplies, as defined by probe manufacturer and facility procedures.

High-level disinfection supplies compatible with ASTRA:

Area should be clean and free from clutter as defined by facility procedures.

Daily Checks / Prior to Operation of ASTRA

ASTRA unit is always left on to maintain appropriate temperature. If system power has been turned off operator must wait until bottle reaches temperature.

Visually inspect water lines, electrical connections, fan operation, and exterior of the unit daily.

For details on daily inspection, refer to “Daily Check / Prior to Operation” in the ASTRA TEE or ASTRA VR Operator’s Manual.

NOTE: CIVCO recommends taping instructions above the machine, on inside of ASTRA door, or on side of machine.

Transportation of Dirty Probe

Post-exam, transport ultrasound probe according to the manufacturer’s IFU.

For TEE probes using CIVCO’s transport tray, place the dirty probe in the clean tray & flip lid to dirty. Transport probe to reprocessing location and dispose of tray.

Pre-clean

Reference your ultrasound probe manufacturer’s IFU for pre-cleaning instructions.

Visually inspect entire ultrasound probe to ensure it is clean.

CIVCO offers dry and enzymatic sponges, disinfecting wipes, and lint-free cloths to aid a compliant pre-clean process.

High-Level Disinfection

NOTE: You may refer to the laminated ASTRA Quick Start Instructions for the following high-level disinfection steps.

At rest, the display reads:

Entering Exam ID is optional, but you must scan ID or press ENTER to continue. Display will read:

Scan barcode on probe electrical connector and place into the wall-mounted Connector Holder. Display will read:

Insert probe into disinfection chamber. Display will read:

Ready for Use: Press Enter to Start

Scan Probe

Scan Exam ID: Enter = skip

Close Door or Scan Second Probe

Scan Operator ID or press ENTER to Skip. Display will read:

Scan TS Bottle: MENU = Cancel

Once level is reached, display will read:

MRC Countdown Timer: Skip < > Start

Install second probe (if required) following same instructions or close door. Barcode scanner will remain illuminated until door is closed, or second probe is scanned. Display will read:

Scan Operator ID: ENTER = Skip

NOTE: It does not matter which chamber is loaded first.

NOTE: You may not add a second probe once the high-level disinfection cycle has started.

Filling chamber with HLD, please wait

Scanning a new Test Strip bottle will start the disinfection cycle. Display will read:

Utilizing the MRC Countdown Timer is optional, but you must press either Skip or Start to continue. If you plan to use the timer, open disinfection chamber blue door. Before pressing Start, ensure test strip is in hand, ready to use. Press Start and dip an MRC test strip into HLD, holding it submerged for dip time. Remove test strip and close door. Display will read:

TS Dip XXs Read XXs

Once the countdown timer is complete (or skipped), the results of the MRC test may be read and documented. Display will read:

Test MRC: PASS < > FAIL

Compare test strip to color chart on manufacturer’s bottle. Press PASS or FAIL using the corresponding arrows.

NOTE: Pressing FAIL requires a new bottle of HLD and will exit the disinfection cycle.

Conduct leak testing according to manufacturer’s instructions. Press PASS or FAIL using corresponding arrows. Data will be logged.

For ASTRA TEE only, display will read:

Test Probe Leakage: PASS < > FAIL

After removal, display will read:

Ready for Use: Press Enter to Start

Display will read:

Disinfecting: XX minutes remaining

On successful completion of disinfection and rinse cycles, display will read:

Successful Cycle: Remove Probe(s)

Test Probe Leakage: Left < > Right

NOTE: For two probes, select which probe to test first using the corresponding arrows. Process will need to be repeated to test Left and Right probes.

NOTE: If you do not return as soon as the cycle ends, there is no risk of damage to the ultrasound probe(s). However, the ASTRA is not intended to be used for long-term storage of ultrasound probes.

NOTE: You do not need to turn the ASTRA off at the end of the day or at the end of a cycle.

Select Your Leak Test KitTo perform leak testing with ASTRA, you need a leakage tester meter and conductivity probe, and an ultrasound leakage tester adapter compatible with your ultrasound system.

The probe(s) are disinfected and should be removed. Carefully dry probe according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Transportation of Clean Probe

Post disinfection, transport ultrasound probe according to the manufacturer’s IFU.

For TEE probes using CIVCO’s transport tray, use a clean tray to transport the disinfected probe to its storage cabinet.

ASTRA Maintenance

Replacing HLD Bottle

Unit will prompt “Change Disinfectant” every 14 days or 21 days (depending on HLD type) or if the MRC test fails. Follow unit prompts to change bottle. Ensure connector fittings are snapped into place.

Replacing Filters

Unit will prompt “Change Air Filter” and “Change Water Filter” every 6 months. Follow unit prompts to change filters.

Test Strip Quality Control

Quality Control must be performed when a new bottle of test strips is opened. Test strips can be used for the number of days after opening specified by the manufacturer or the expiration date, whichever occurs first. Discard any test strip bottle left open longer than allowed by manufacturer’s instructions.

Downloading Log File

To download a cycle report, insert a USB into the ASTRA, press the menu button to get to the “download cycle log” screen, and press ENTER to begin the download process.

Once download process is complete, you can review the report by removing the USB and plugging it into a computer.

NOTE: ASTRA automatically tracks use life of the following consumables:

• Air Filter• Water Filter• HLD Bottle

Cycle report should be downloaded as your hospital policy dictates.

NOTE: A WILD (Water Inlet Line Disinfection) cycle is required after a water filter change and after 14 days of inactivity and requires replacement of HLD bottle.

NOTE: The ASTRA Ultra model will mandate the quality control of new test strip bottles, track the open use life, and log qualified test strip bottles. For more information, refer to the ASTRA IFU or the “Load Qualified Test Strip Bottle” section on the laminated ASTRA Troubleshooting Handout.
