ASTM F2897 as a Pointer to Additional Information
Using the Standardized F2897 Identifier
• Dominion Energy has been an early adopter of component
lot capture at the point of Installation.
• R.W. Lyall has been an early adopter of applying the
F2897 identifier to their products.
• CartoPac provides an expansive set of tools and solutions
for optimized mobile capture of Gas Component assets
Working together to Link it all together
Headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, Dominion Energy is one of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy.
Portfolio:
• 26,400 megawatts of electric generation
• 66,000 miles of natural gas transmission, gathering, storage and distribution pipeline
• 64,200 miles of electric transmission and distribution lines
• Operates one of the largest natural gas storage systems in the U.S. with 1 trillion cubic feet of capacity, and serve more than 6 million utility and retail energy customers

As- Build Construction Solution
• Esri ArcGIS for Server and CartoPac Mobile Software
• Trimble GEO 7X-6000 Mapping Grade with External Antenna
• Laser Range Finder • Barcode Scanner • VRS: Real time 4” Spatial Accuracy • 80 plus Inspectors • 92,000 Services, 2,600 miles of
Mains • Expanding into Transmission
Goals for Collecting Bar Codes
• Extension of current GPS As built solution
• Support Separate Bar Code Scanner
Bluetooth to Trimble Geo Device
Device in the Ditch
Need IP rating
• Scan and Decode barcode on the Mobile Device
Instant Display of select attributes on mobile device
Feel good to make sure what is scanned is correct
Additional attributed added to forms for data needed
beyond the standard
Challenges of Tracking and Traceability @ Dominion West
• Collect Feature in Place Pipe (Linear)
Fitting/Valve (Point)
Pipe obstacles
Type of barcode
Contrast between pipe and barcode
One line of barcode (need multiple lines for when pipe is in ditch)
Scratches in barcode (not readable)
Fitting/Valve obstacles
Placement of barcode (barcode on both sides of label)
Not enough room to collect barcode when in ditch
Barcode not available at time of installation
Damaged barcode
Orientation of barcode when being installed by contractor
Challenges of Tracking and Traceability @ Dominion West
• Bar Code Scanner Challenges Scan location (distance, orientation, where to aim)
Bluetooth connection (range limitation)
Software technology to read laser etching
Hardware technology of sighting device
Ability to charge batteries outside of device • CODE Corp
Rugged, hand held scanner optimized for gas industry
Widely used in medical applications
Enhanced imaging to address tight curvature and low contrast bar codes on plastic pipe
Integrated iOS app
2016 Plan Review
Introduction – RW Lyall
Lyall has been Marking their Gas pressure products with the ASTM F2897 Identifier since 2012
Introduction – RW Lyall
Lyall Developed its own
F2897 Encoder and
Decoder right away.
Hubbell HGCA is now developing Apps for both Apple and Android Mobile Devices
Introduction – RW Lyall
• In 2014 we began to Lot Track many of our Gas pressure products from our Corona Facility.
Introduction – RW Lyall
In 2016 Lyall Corona began to Link Component Lot Track information with the parent assembly’s 16 character F2897 Code for Risers, Transitions & EFV’s.
Introduction – RW Lyall
With all of the information about a component now linked to the 16 character Lot code and with all of the additional component Lots linked to the assembly, how do we get that information to the End User so they can access it through the F2897 code?
Assemblies • Single bar code now linked to
all the components and relevant data
• Simplifies field data collection
• Still have the bar codes of on individual components in the assembly
• Option for end user to collect as single assembly or individual components when Lot number is assessable.

Additional Data Needed Beyond ASTM F2987 Standard • Information regarding Components
within Assembled or Fabricated Product
• Item Descriptions
• EFV (volume of EFV -3/4” 1200 – 1800)
• Item Number or Customer Item Number
• Purchase Order number for traceability
Approach • Augment the Standard with Fitting Data from
Manufacturer • Data Delivery to Operator from Manufacturer to Enterprise System
• GPS Data Collection Process – Capture and Decode data
• Augment the data from the manufacturer with the date from the field into one complete record in the GIS
Technology Demo
• Login and interface with Enterprise GIS
• Data Collection – As Built - Track and Trace • Riser
• EFV
• Transition
• Upload and Add Value to Data back in GIS • View the field data
• Run Automated Process to Update with Augmented Data and Linked Documents
• View Complete Record in GIS
Mobile Data Collection
Augmenting the Standard
Augmenting the Standard
Not the END but… A step in the right direction
• Advantage Quickly scan (one) component that links to (one) item number in your system with all the information about its description, components linked as attributes locally and in your custody at the time the component is installed
• Challenges If an assembled component is scanned then individual components, although the lot information is available, may not be queried directly without:
1. Scanning each component separately
2. Creating discrete data fields for the transferred data
