INTRODUCTION

This report covers the assessment wor.k done on twelve unpatented mining claims situated in the northwest quadrant of Anglesea Township in the county of Lennox and Addington, Ontario during the year of 1991. Work consisted mainly of stripping and detailed mapping, sampling, some gepchemistry and minor line cutting. This program of work was aimed at evaluating the magnetic and VLF electromagnetic anomalies obtained in the previous year and also to pick out some diamond drill targets. The work was carried out under the Ontario Prospectors Assistance Program (Grant No. OPG91-034, OPAP Registration No. OP91-20?).

PROPERTY. LOCATION. ACCESS

The twelve claims were recorded on September 15, 1989 and comprise 600 acres, more or less. The claims are held 100# by the writer, Harry Dowhaluk, whose address is Box 118, Tamworth, Ontario, KOK 3GO. The claims are in Anglesea Township which is subdivided and is in lennox and Addington County. These claims are further described as follows:Concession XIII Si lots 28,27,26. 25, claims 1104437, -38, -39,-40 Concession XII Ni lots 28,27,26, 25, claims 1104441, -42, -43,-44 Concession XII Si lots 28,27,26, 25, claims 1104445, -46, -47,-48

There is easy access to the claims by vehicle. The claims lie astride the Cloyne-Gilmour access road. This road goes west from the north end of the village of Cloyne on Highwqy 4l, skirts the south shore of Skootamata lake, crosses Killer Creek in two places, crosses our claim group and proceeds westwards accross Grimsthorpe Township and on to Gilmour near Highway 62. There are four old logging roads on the property to provide additional access.

The NTS 1:50,000 topographic map that covers the area is numbered 31 C/14, Mazinaw Lake. The MNR map M-43, Anglesea Township, shows the subdivisions and claims. The Ontario Geological Survey has recently released the Open File Map 132 , "Geology of the Mazinaw Lake Area (31 C/14". This publication mainly concerns the southwest part of the area which includes the property area.

TOPOGRAPHY

The claim block is roughly 1,000 feet above sea level (330 meters). The terrain is hummocky with relief generally less than 100 feet.. There are numerous beaver ponds, large and small, often filled with standing dead trees (shlekos). The Killer Creek drains the whole area; it is a slow meandering stream in the north part of the claim block where it cuts through a large beaver meadow, but has a series of rapids, cascades and fast water in the lower end. It enters a large marshy pond at the east end from which it continues easterly to spill into Skootamata Lake.

The area has been extensively logged over the years. Where some of the larger trees are left, the forest floor is cleanj but most of the forest has an upper story of sporadic "la'rge trees'; and a very brushy understory. The mixed forest consists of balsam fir, white pine, hemlock, white cedar, white spruce, sugar maple, white birch, aspen poplar, basswood, black ash and the occasional beech. Significant underbrush consists of speckled alder (wet places), hazelnut, moose maple, and mountain holly (in ash swamps). Prickly raspberry and thimbleberry canes thrive on ground disturbed by logging machines.

At present, the claim-block has no permanent inhabitants; however, there are two small hunting camps. There were no logging operations in 1990 or 1991.

The climate is humid continental with cool summers and cold winters. Snow covers the ground for about four months of the year.

HISTORY AND PREVIOUS WORK

The claims are in the Eastern Ontario Gold Belt. Over half of the production in this belt has come from one mine - the Cordoba in the Marmora area, which, from 1897 to 19^0 mined 119,813 tons of ore presumably grading 0.16 oz/t gold which was valued at $i^50,826. The Addington Mine (Golden Fleece) in nearby Kaladar Township, the Ore Chimney in nearby Barrie Township and the Gilmour Mine in Grimsthorpe Township are all well known gold properties in the general area of the claim block. Quartz stringers and veins carry the gold in these properties.

In 198?, United Reef Petroleums Limited staked tweny claims which - form a block on the north side of the subject twelve claims to follow up an occurence of gold from which a grab sample returned a value of 0.19 oz/t gold. A grid was cut and magnetic and VLFelectromagnetic surveyswere carried out on the twenty claims under

of thv direction,, Wayne Johnson, geologist. This work was followed upwith some backhoe trenching.

At about this time, some claims were staked on the east part of the subject claims as part of an investigation of building stone potential of the Killer Creek Gabbro. These claims were abandoned.

In 1989, the writer carried out the Killer Creek Project under a grant from OPAP. This involved reconnaissance mapping-prospecting (with some geochem) in a swath along the Cloyne-Gilmour access road from the mouth of Killer Creek at the west end of Scootamata Lake westwards to the Partridge Creek bridge in Grimsthorpe Township. This work indicated large zones of fine disseminated pyrite j also, a small flat-lying quartz vein four inches wide yielded an assay of 0.6?4 oz/t gold. The twelve claims were staked in late summer and recorded on Septeber 15i 1989* These claims are known as the Killer Creek claims.

In the following year, 1990* the writer carried out 16.7 miles of line cutting at 300-foot intervals, a VLF electromagnetic and magnetometer surveys, as well as geological mapping on a scale of i inch to 200 feet. This was carried out under an OPAP grant.

During the summer of 1990, the southwest quadrant of the Mazinaw Lake area (31 C/14) was mapped by R, M. Easton of the Geological Survey of Ontario. The twelve claims are covered by this mapping. (Open File map 132). Easton shows the Partridge Creek Shear Zone which crosses the claims and coincides with the strongest":anomaly on the.property, namely, E-16.

During 1991, the writer did hand stripping on some nine areas the details of which are shown on smaller larger-scaled maps. An index map on a scale of one inch to 200 f eeti shows theJ location of the detailed maps.

PIEISTOCENE GLACIATION

Gravelly till of Pleistocene age-covers the entire property. Since both the direction of glaciation and the strike of formations are south, there is a tendency to north-south cragsand-tail drumlin oid ridges. The drift cover is shallow for the most part and the terrain is hummocky. The till is to a large extent lodgement till - the lowermost layer deposited at the base of the glacier. Consequently, the till tends to reflect the nature of the underlying rock. There is one large erratic of dolomitic marble on the east side of the GS zone.

The till contains abundant clasts of basalt up to one foot or more in length. Oxidation of the basalt clasts in the top three feet gives the till a bright red-brown colour.

Digging small holes in-'.theiiiir.airihthelyiciri^ty' of an&roaiiee^tsr. provides clues to explain the anomaly, e.g., some disseminated pyrite and pyrrhotite grains in basalt clasts on a small magnetic ':-. anomaly appear to account for the slightly higher mag values.

Marshy areas where large low mag readings are extensive could be underlain by clay.

The claim block is in the Grenville Structural Province. The western two-thirds of the property consists of basaltic metavolcanics of the Tudor Formation which have been dated at 1,3 b.y. The eastern third of the property is underlain by rather coarse-

grained anorthositic gabbro (The Killer Creek Gabbro). The ODK map No. 2053, Madoc area, shows the Tudor volcanics

to be horseshoe-shaped in Anglesea Township. The belt comes into the southeast corner of Anglesea Township and continues northward through Cloyne, then arches westwards on the north side of Skootamata Lake to continue southerly along the Anglesea-Grimsthorpe!'boundary.

The basalt is black in colour, fine-grained, massive to schistose and has been metamorphosed to fine-grained hornblende and white plagioclase} the latter mineral shows a marked tendency to segregate

as small clots or grains but some of these may be distorted amygdules. A whole rock analysis of one sample shows the basalt to be tholeiitic. The prevailing schistocity is north to northeast. Shearing on the surface often gives rise to rows of weathering pits, or pot-holes,which are up to two inches deep. The rock f:weathers dark green.

The gabbro is typically -coarse-grained., ofL medium colour and the plagioclase is conspicuously. snow-\vhite.~Sills 6f^gabbro "are intercalated with the volcanics in some places.

A phase of the volcanics that generally carries some fine, disseminated pyrite (1-350 shows rusty weathering on outcrops. The rock is massive, fine-medium grained, black to greenish black with fine, wispy intergranular plagioclase. It weathers dark green. In spots it grades into graywacke and hornblende biotite schist. It seems to be atuff made up of dust and ash-sized particles. Calcite probably filled the spaces between the ash particles to be replaced later by feldspar. Such rocks are most abundant in the E-16 zone (part of the Partridge Creek Shear Zone). This rock is associated with volcanogenic sediments which are interbedded and range from graywacke to feldspathic and quartz wackes.

Feldspar porphyry weathers pinkish gray and occurs as dikes up fifteen feet wide and strjjc.e. N 7QO *.

EPUCTUPAI. GEOLOGY

The schistocity of both basalt and gabbro strike north to north- northeast. The Partridge Creek Shear Zone is apparently conformable with the schistocity in general j it coincides with the E-16 conductor axis. The zone is probably 400 feet wide.

There are several ponds along a small creek that flows west to east in a pronounced valley. Some of the stripping shown on Map 5 revealed three small quartz veins up to one inch wide which are parallel to this east-west presumed fault. A small fault is associated with one of these veinlets; it shows that the north side has moved east relative to the south side.

On the GS zone, which strikes N 150E, small drag folds are Z-shaped showing that the shearing movement pushed the west side northward relative to the east side.

ASSESSMENT WORK

Two short base lines were cut. The GS zone base line is shown on maps 2, 2a, and is 1200 feet long in the direction N 15 E. The base line 8+43 E is -' shown on map 5t is 330 feet long in the direction S 20'0E; it starts at 8+43 E on L-18-S.

Total line-cutting 1,530 ft. (446 m)The stripping . is listed on the following pages. Altogether,

the total stripping was:Stripping 3,194 sq feet (297 sq m)

The location of the stripping is shown on the accompanying maps. Some geochemistry was carried out at the GS zone. The nine maps

show the work done t stripping, geochem work, geological observations, and sampling. These will be discossed individually.

THE GS ZONE (THE GABBRO SCHIST ZONE)

A small outcrop at 19+50 W on L-15-S on claimll04445 was re- examined beause of its altered appearance. The rock is a gabbro schist which is sometimes called flaser gabbro. This is a cataclastic rock in which are preserved lenses of undeformed rock separated by streaks of finely crystalline, foliated material or aggregates of parallel scales (mica). Acentral zone carries thin lenses of quartz from paper thin up to four inches wide at the north end.

The GS Zone (See maps 2a, 2B) strikes N 15OE and dips 800 to the east.It is exposed in numerous outcrops for a distance of 400 feetj it is at least 26 feet wide. The zone could not be traced north of the access road. Neither the magnetometer nor the electro magnetic surveys showed any anomalies over this zone.

No significant values in gold were obtained in the samples takeni

Two pieces of float quartz were found on or rear the GS Zone in th? vicinity of the access road, gne piece at 3+50 N on the GS base line is in the ditch and was probably moved by road construction. This piece of glassy, white quartz measures 12"x7"x6". The other piece of float quartz was found about 200 feet to the southeast} it had rusty cracks and measured 9"x9"x?". The float quartz carried no values of significance, namelyi#11W Grab -0.01 oz/t Au In ditch

#11488 " - 2 ppb Au

The presence of this quartz float allows for speculation on the existence of a quartz vein near the GS Zone, perhaps in an east-west direction. To check this possibility, 28 humus samples for gold were taken on L-12-S starting at 10-W and ending at 18-W, and also on I-15-S from 21-W to 8-W.

The humus sampling (see Map #3) was quite negative. There is one value of 5 PP^ and four values of 3 ppb. If a quartz vein does exist in the area sampled, it probably does not carry any significant gold. .-''

In the sampling, the black, decomposed humus layer at the base of the A horizon was used which is about four inches below the surface. In the lab (Swastika Laboratories Ltd), the sample was macerated, ashed, screened through 80 mesh, then subjected to fire assay with atomic absorption finish.

An attempt to trace the zone northeasterly across the access road, over the higher ground and across the swampy area, E-l, E-6, F-8 on map #3. was unsuccessful. A search was also made to the south- west but no signs of the shear zone were found (Map #1).

'he E-12 SHEAF ZONE

This anomaly reflects a strong shear zone which consists of greenstone schisi/Unlike the GS Zone, this shear zone is well defined by; the VLP electromagnetic survey. The zone extends for some 2,100 feet(650m), strike N150E and dips about 80OE which is conformable to the formations. It contains two small magnetic anomalies, 'O' and 'K*.

It is well exposed in several outcrops just to the southwest of 13-W on L-15-S and 15-W on L-18-S. The zone also crosses the flat-lying gold-bearing quartz vein in the gravel pit and continues northeastward to L-6-S. The magnetic anomaly 'M'occurs in the zone.

The flat-lying four-inch-wide quartz vein (The Gravel Pit Vein), was discovered and sampled in 1989 by the writer; the sampling yielded the following results from grabs of the quartz rocki 0.674, 0.113, 0.024, 0.00?, 0.002, nil, and nil oz/t gold. This vein lies in the west side of the shear zone.It is possible that there could fee a^setctffssoeji veins. The 'M 1 magnetic anomaly is weak but it is associated with the E-12 conductor zone and the Gravel Pit Vein.

There is no significant mineraliztion apart from the vein. At 7-W on L-6-S, a few scattered grains of pyrite and arsenopyrite were noted. Du L-18-S si SO-iW-rS, a thin streak of spotted schist appears to contain small garnet porphyroblasts.

SOME MAGNETIC ANOMALIES :

On anomaly D at the west boundary on L-15-S (maps #1, 2B) ( pome sparse, disseminated pyrite and pyrrhotite were found. Onr grain of chalcopyrite was seen. Although of no consequence, it still shows more sulphides than is usual in most outcrops.

In the J anomaly (Map #1)located in the southwest corner of the property, much float basalt was present but no sulphides. Possibly some fine disseminated magnetite was present.

AW (map 9)on L-15-N on the east side of the road, reads 1,495 gammas. A large number of large gabbro boulders was noted at this location.

e (map 9) is on L-17-N and 18-W and reads 1,255 gammas. A hole was dug which contained clasts of of basalt, feldspar porphyry, and gabbro but nothing that was magnetic. The source of magnetic force was probably lower down.

CROSS ZONE (Map #7')

Some outcrops of volcanic flows were stripped here which is on the west side of of the E-16 zone. Apart from a half-inch quartz vein, no other quartz veins parallel to the east-west valley (on the south side) were turned up. Weathering pits are abundant in this area.

Similar volcanics were stripped on L-6-S and I-9-S between 13-E and 12-E.

EAST BOUNDARY ZONE (Map #6}The gabbro is coarse-grained and sheared (striking N 200E)

in the vicinity of26-E on L-12-S. The west outcrop is a dark gabbro and contains a three-inch syenite dike that parallels the schistocity but dips 850 to the west. The east outcrop is extremely dark-colouredwith very sparse plagioclase! it can be called a melanogabbro. The E-16 ZONE ( map #4 )

The E-16 Zone appears to be the most significant feature on the property. It appears to coincide with R.M. Easton's Partridge Creek Shear Zone. It crosses the entire property from south to north and is about 400 feet wide j it carries from l to 3^ dissem inated pyrite.

The tuff horizon, which is the main constituent of this zone, marks a change from volcanic flows to tuff falls which allowed for the development of volcanogenic sediments. Winnowing of the tuffaceous material continued through stages of wackes until quartz wacke was the end result. This natural panning action was effective enough to show up in a grab sample of quartz wacke to yield 60 ppb of gold at 4+50 W on L-24-S.

A generalized cross section from west to east would give some thing as follows:

A peculiar 'chatoyant 1 luster is associated with the smoky quartz and brilliant blue and golden yellow reflectios could be seen with the aid of a strong hand lens. Oddly enough, the reflections disappeared after the quartz was kept indoors for some three weeks; the brilliant yellow colour fading to a dull grayish tan.The geoscan did not show any anomalous copper to account for the blue and yellow reflections. CONCLUSIONS AND PECOMMENDATIONS

Work to date suggests that there are two main types of mineraliz- ationof. .interest in the area - quartz veins with gold, pyrite, arseno pyrite, and sphalerite (the O 'Bonnell vein in southeast Anglesea and the Gravel Pit vein on the property) and disseminated sulphide zones such as occurs on the E-16 zone which has potential for gold and base metals.

There is an east- west valley which may be a 'break' for the emplace ment of veins along, or off, this structure.

The E- 16 zone is a very large structure some 400 feet wide and most of it is under ponds, swamps and overburden} there is a variety of rock types and phases. This zone needs to be checked with diamond
