deStinAtion eduCAtion: AiC 53rd AnnuAl ConferenCe!

As President of the AIC, I welcome you to the Association of Indiana Counties’ 53rd Annual Conference in Allen County. This year’s host committees – made up of county officials from Allen and Adams counties - have worked diligently to make this conference one that you’ll fondly remember for years to come!

As always, this year’s conference will include many educational and

professional opportunities. During the next four days you may choose from several workshop sessions that will feature knowledgeable and engaging speakers who will help you gain a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing county government today.

As you take advantage of the learning opportunities, be sure to allow time for networking with your peers. Several events have also been planned to help you relax and unwind. The AIC has made it easy to network with company representatives and other county officials, who like you, are working diligently for the communities they serve.

As always, thank you for your support and participation. Your attendance will make this 53rd Annual Conference a remarkable event, which I hope will be one you’ll always remember. Be sure to mark your calendars for the fall of 2012 when the AIC holds its 54th Annual Conference at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis/Marion County. You’ll be in good hands as my successor, Allen County Commissioner Therese Brown, takes over as the AIC’s next President.

Affiliate meetingsMeet with your affiliate group during the morning of Tuesday, September 27. Your affiliate association president has planned a great meeting for your group. Keep up to date on issues related to your office by attending this important and educational meeting.

Welcome receptionCelebrate the opening of the conference at the beautiful Parkview Field – Home of the Tin Caps Baseball Team. Just steps away from the convention center we will be enjoying the suite level lounge where we will have an exceptional view of Parkview Field and the Fort Wayne skyline. Enjoy entertainment from Hoosier Gentry, a strolling barbershop quartet while you reconnect with old friends.

General SessionKeynote Speaker Jan Hargrave will be speaking to us on “Understanding the Importance of Nonverbal Communication”. It’s a scientific fact that a person’s body language give away his true intentions. Actually more than 90 percent of all face-to-face communication is nonverbal; thus, the silent messages of the body

often reveal more than the spoken word in conveying true feelings and attitudes. Jan, expert in the field of nonverbal communication and author of many books, helps you discover how to persuade another to adopt your viewpoints and detect deception, make a positive impression, and more! Jan’s fascinating presentation gives you the advantage you need to make in depth character assessments, as well as an increased ability to develop ethical nonverbal behaviors in professional relationships. This session will close with the 2011 AIC Institute for Excellence in County Government graduation and the awarding of the Masters Pins.

On Tuesday we will be having a cocktail reception from 4-6 p.m. in the exhibit hall featuring our signature cocktail.

Workshop opportunitiesWednesday, September 28 is a day of learning at the annual conference. The AIC staff and training committee have a number of informative workshops planned that impact all county offices. With three rounds of three workshops and one featured workshop, there will be plenty of sessions to interest you. Remember, by attending these workshops you will not only learn more about county issues but you will also earn three Institute credits! On Wednesday, remember that lunch will be served in the exhibit hall.

Awards banquet and danceAfter a long day of picking and choosing from the 10 workshops and walking the exhibit hall, enjoy a cocktail during the Reception and then celebrate the achievements of your colleagues at the Awards Banquet and Dance. The entertainment for the night is sure to be a county favorite,

featuring Dick Diamond and the Dusters, a tribute/novelty/entertainment act whose purpose is to relive the glory days of 70s and 80s nostalgia. They promise to pack the dance floor and put a smile on everyone’s face!
