A great year ahead with many great challenges and lasting memories to be made! During the first few days of 2015 I heard a lot about new year's resolu- tions on the television, on the radio and, from my girls at home as they are discussing it in their classrooms. The consensus was that a lot of us make resolutions at the beginning of the year, however they dissolve as quickly as they came and the year progresses forward. So, in light of my resolution that hasn't really taken off yet... go figure... I've just decided to put a little more "me" time in my calendar. Reflection is also something that we all do when we reach the beginning of a new year. What we have accomplished; what we managed to start yet not finish; and, what our goals for this coming year will be. Goals are beneficial for everyone, regardless of where you are in your life - vacations / continuing education - physical and academic / home improvements etc. and, keeping a positive attitude contributes to moving your goals forward to fruition. When you think about it, a resolution is somewhat like a goal: a firm decision to do something. Schedule your goals for the year ahead and make your best effort to achieve them - once those goals are achieved - self satisfaction and a beautiful inner feeling of 'yeah' will shine through. Goals can also be about helping others when you can; encouraging people when they are under the weather; or, assisting as a volunteer in any organization. People need people! My biggest goal is to continue to be grateful for all that I am and all that I have : a circle of beautiful people! We welcome 2015 with open arms as it brings many wonderful milestones with it for the girls and I! Happy New Year - Welcome to 2015!

A great year ahead with many great challenges and lasting memories to be made! During the first few days of 2015 I heard a lot about new year's resolu-tions on the television, on the radio and, from my girls at home as they are discussing it in their classrooms. The consensus was that a lot of us make resolutions at the beginning of the year, however they dissolve as quickly as they came and the year progresses forward. So, in light of my resolution that hasn't really taken off yet... go figure... I've just decided to put a little more "me" time in my calendar.

Lisa Trudel: Crisis Management - Tackle it Now!

Lisa Trudel has been active in the career and employment counselling field for over 20 years.

A former secretary and administrative assistant, Lisa made a career change in the early 90’s

into adult education and career counselling, and currently works full-time as a Career Spe-

cialist with the Centre for Education & Training in downtown Toronto.

She taught in George Brown College’s Career Counselling Diploma program for many years,

and is a member of the Toronto Chapter of the Association of Career Professionals Interna-

tional. Lisa has written feature articles and book reviews for various on-line and print publi-

cations and has been a Guest Speaker for numerous conferences and professional associa-

tions.

QAA CORNER

The main purpose of the Association of Administrative Assistants is to encour-age people in the business world to continuously upgrade their professionalism through continuing education. That Association is confident that the advantages of advanced learning will be of mutual benefit to the company and the Administrative Assistant.

The Qualified Administrative Assistant (Q.A.A.) program, sponsored by the As-sociation, is one of the vehicles available to those interested in advancing their professional development. This program is available through distance, correspondence, and lecture courses from Universities and Colleges across Canada.

All applicants wishing to register as a student must be a member of the Associa-tion of Administrative Assistants before they can apply to become a Q.A.A. program student.

To remain consistent with other professional associations who require their members to re-certify their professional designation on a regular basis, we provide our Q.A.A. members a process to regularly renew their certification and maintain professional currency.

A certification renewal process is completed every three years upon graduation. Not holding a valid membership (annual paid membership) with the Association, your Q.A.A. designation is also not valid.

Graduation requirements as well as course requirements have been revisited.

achieve more than you think;

your best secret weapon could be right beside you;

follow your instincts, they are correct;

assistants often know better - it's about people;

the years fly - make yourself a priority;

"Embrace your power" - you know more than you think; and,

assistants help other assistants !

Stress Management for Women

A young lady confidently walked around the room while leading and explaining stress management to an audience with a raised glass of water.

Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, 'half empty or half full?'

She fooled them all .... "How heavy is this glass of water?" she inquired with a smile. Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz. She replied , "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

She continued, "and that's the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on." "As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden - holding stress longer and better each time practiced. So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night.

So, here are some thoughts to keep in mind:

1 * Accept the fact that some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue!

2 * Always keep your words soft and sweet just in case you have to eat them.

3 * Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

4 * Drive carefully... It's not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker.

5 * If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

6 * If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

7 * It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

8 * Never buy a car you can't push.

9 * Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

10 * Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

11 * Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

12 * The second mouse gets the cheese.

13 * When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

14 * Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

15 * Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.

16 * We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull.

Some have weird names and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

17 * A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

18 * Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY

19 * Save the earth..... It's the only planet with chocolate!

A lollipop - to help you lick your problems

Tissues - to wipe your eyes after sleeping during class

A sponge - to soak up knowledge

Tootsie roll - to help you roll with the punches

An eraser - so each day you can start with a clean slate

Paper clip - to hold everything together

Pencil - to "write your wrongs"

Candle - when you're up late studying

Piece of string - to help you tie up loose ends

Pack of gum - so your class can stick together

Mounds bar - for the information you'll learn

Cotton ball - for when you can't hear your-self think

Band-Aid - to heal your wounds

Button - to remind you that sometimes you have to "button your lip"

Penny - so you have enough "cents" to realize what a valuable person you are

Safety pin - for little emergencies

Homework rock - to remind you to do your homework

And a prayer for you to say each night.

The Association of Administrative

Assistants is a Canadian chartered

non-profit professional organization

founded in April 1951. The Associa-

tion is proactive in encouraging its

members to further their education

and enhance their career opportuni-

ties by continuously upgrading their

skills and professionalism. Associa-

tion members are encouraged to

obtain the Qualified Administrative

Assistant (Q.A.A.) designation. The

Qualified Administrative Assistant

Program consists of three compulsory

courses and four elective courses

offered at eighteen post secondary

institutions across Canada. The first

graduating class was in May 1960. In

May 2013, the Q.A.A. designation was

awarded to our 726th graduate.
