California Flag All The Way Down The Hill

California Flag Wins Turf Sprint

Dancing in Silks in Sprint Stunner

Turning what had seemed to be a deep and complex race intosomething entirely different, California Flag flaunted his superiorspeed Saturday in completely dominating the second running ofthe $909,000 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.

Nineteen-year-old jockey Joe Talamo was able to getCalifornia Flag to settle into a smooth tempo in the run down thehill of the 6 1/2-furlong turf course, and after crossing the maintrack for the homestretch with an open lead, the 5-year-old geld-ing just cruised from there, prevailing by 1 3/4 lengths over GottaHave Her.

California Flag, bred and owned by Hi Card Ranch and basedin southern California with trainer Brian Koriner, returned $8.80as the lukewarm favorite in a field of 14.

Talamo excitedly waved his whip under the wire after winninga Breeders' Cup race for the first time.

"I was very pleased with the way he relaxed for me early," hesaid. "What a tremendous horse this is."

Canadian Ballet outbroke California Flag for the early lead, and after a quarter-mile it was just the two of them well in front. As they approached the crossover, Canadian Ballet began to fadewhile bids from pace-chasers Silver Timber and Get Funky alsostalled, allowing California Flag to put the race away.

Gotta Have Her, one of three female runners in the race, was

up in the final strides at 9-1 to get second, three-quarters of alength before Cannonball, with Delta Storm a head back infourth. Diamondrella, the 5-1 second choice, finished 11th, whileDesert Code, a 36-1 winner of the inaugural Turf Sprint last year, finished 13th at 22-1.

California Flag, bred in the state for which he is named, setfractions of 21.50 and 43.09 seconds before finishing the 6 1/2-furlong distance in 1:11.28 over a firm turf. He already owned thecourse record of 1:11.10 from his win in the 2008 MorvichHandicap.

Last year, California Flag faded to 10th in the BC Turf Sprintafter leading through a half-mile in a scorching 41.81 seconds.Koriner, a former Quarter Horse trainer who grew up near SantaAnita, noted that the difference this time was the less taxing paceand the fact "the horse has matured. Joe did a great job."

Hi Card is the nom-de-course of Keith Card, an 82-year-oldretired contractor who lives in Murrieta, Calif.

Talamo, a New Orleans native who rides regularly on thesouthern California circuit, is not the youngest jockey to win aBreeders' Cup event. That honor belongs to Fernando Jara, whowon the 2006 BC Classic on Invasor when he was 18.

The $2 exacta (3-7) paid $77.20 and the $2 trifecta (3-7-6)paid $635.—Marty McGee

California-bred California Flag, who broke loose and ran backto the barn earlier in the week, shook loose and ran off to winSaturday’s $1 million Grade I Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at OakTree at Santa Anita.

California Flag is by Avenue of Flags, out of the Afleet mareUltrafleet, was bred by, foaled at and owned by Hi Card Ranch ofCTBA director Keith Card and is trained by Brian Koriner. JoeTalamo, in his lone Breeders’ Cup mount, rode California Flag, who went off as the 3-1 favorite.

California Flag has a four-race win streak and eight wins in 16career starts, earnings of $952,996 and was coming off a win in theSept. 30 Morvich. He finished 10th after leading the BreedersCup Turf Sprint turning for home a year ago.

"He went right to the lead, relaxed and down the lane I askedhim and he gave me everything," said Talamo, who said the win-ner jumped when he crossed over the synthetic surface at the topof the stretch but kept to his task.

California Flag, who holds the track record for the distance at1:11.00, was timed in 1:11.28 and won by 1 ¾ lengths.

Dancing in Silks in Sprint StunnerCalifornia Cup Sprint winner Dancing in Silks made it back-

to-back California-bred winners in the Breeders’ Cup Saturdaywith a 25-1 upset victory in the $2 million Grade I Sentient JetSprint at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.

Dancing in Silks, a 4-year-old gelding, is the newest Cal-bredmillionaire. He is by Black Minnaloushe, out of the Royal andRegal mare Lemhi Love, was bred by Ronald Jex, was foaled atRancho Corral de Quati, is owned by Ken Kinakin, trained byCarla Gaines and was ridden to his fourth consecutive win by JoelRosario.

The $52.60 win payoff was thesecond-highest in the 26-year history of the race.
