August Birthdays!

While the word, “exercise,” might make you think of running marathons and lifting painfully heavy weights for hours, exercise can be just a 15-minute brisk walk around the neighborhood or playing a game of basketball with friends. Exercise can be enjoyable if you are doing what is right for you and your body. One should get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day for three to ve days a week paired with seven to nine hours of sleep per night.  ese small bouts of activity can be the one factor that can change a bad day into a great day!

Did you know that that exercise can be just as e ective as anti-depressant medications?  When exercising, the brain releases powerful chemicals called endorphins that will cause you to feel energized and content with yourself.  Exercise can also reduce inflammation in the brain and create new neural activity pa erns that can provide a sense of serenity and wellbeing. Due to physical e ects of exercise such as weight loss and muscle growth, people will usually gain a greater sense of self-con dence once they begin to see their body change. An increase in self-con dence contributes to an inverse effect on depression symptoms.  Exercise can also act as a distraction for those with anxiety by taking their focus away from whatever is bothering them, which will relieve some of the stress and tension that person may feel.

Becoming irritable, not ge ing enough sleep, and dealing with memory loss are cognitive challenges some people struggle with daily. All of the stressors that everyday life has to o er can easily bring someone down and choosing to apply negative energy into exercise is an excellent way to cope. By using exercise

Fitness with Kayla!Walking for Wellness: E ects of Physical Activity on Mental Health

as a coping method, those endorphins that were mentioned earlier will have a positive impact on a person’s negative mood.  ose same endorphins also improve focus and can allow one to feel mentally sharp.  In addition, exercise has proven to stimulate the growth of new brain cells which can help prevent age-related memory loss. A positive a itude and being mentally alert can also be improved by getting an adequate amount of sleep every night. Incorporating soothing exercises such as yoga or stretching into your bedtime routine to relax both the body and mind helps promote be er sleep. Additionally, including exercise at moderate or vigorous intensity within morning/a ernoon routines contributes to improved sleep and helps alleviate sleepiness during the daytime.   is would result in providing more energy to be active and productive throughout the day allowing one’s body and mind to be ready for the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep by night.

When thinking about exercise, remember that not only does it provide health bene ts on the body but it also can have a profound impact on mental health as well.  Exercise not only slims your waistline and reduces risk of disease, but it can also act as a remedy for mental challenges such as depression, anxiety and stress. In addition, physical activity improves mood, quality of sleep and even memory.  What are you waiting for? Walk for wellness!

( Just remember, before beginning any regular exercise program, you should consult with your doctor or health professional.)

Journal/Creative Writing

ClubJournaling has been

found to be beneficial not only to mental health,

but also to overall health. Expressing oneself through

writing, coloring or other related ar twork has been proven to

improve a person's outlook to the rest of the world. Expressing oneself

through journaling or other outlets can reduce stress, anxiety and some depression symptoms, which will, in turn, improve your immune system. Another interesting fact about journaling is that it could help to improve short-term memory.

e continuous repetition of writing lists, writing le ers or even simply writing about the pros and cons of your day has been seen to increase overall mood. Here are 8 journal entries to keep in mind if writing is for you:

1. What are 5 good things that happened today?

2. What are 3 things you're grateful for?

3. What is something that you feel you are good at?

4. Write a letter to someone you love. (Send it if you wish.)

5. How would your spouse/ best friend describe you?

6. Make a list of the things that made you smile today.

7. Make a list of the activities you enjoy.

8. Make a list of the places that you have lived/visited in your life.

If you are interested in journaling or creative writing, join us each Wednesday

at 12:00 by the re pit!
