b. Public forum is intended as a time for any member of the public to address the Senate on issues
affecting any student(s) and/or organizations of California State University Channel Islands.
i. Arthur Valenzuela Jr. is the student trustee for the Ventura Community College district,
and attended the meeting to ask briefly for any help he could receive in his efforts to
promote Julia Brownley being elected to the State Assembly. Student Government
directed him to the CI Democrats Club.

a. Special Presentations:
i. CSSA Update- Nick Montgomery and David Ashley
1. Nick and David spoke to the Senate concerning the details of their CSSA trip on
9/15/12. Leaders at the CSSA meeting pushed for students to lobby more on
behalf of education, and encouraged unity among the CSU campuses. David has
been appointed to the CHESS committee. Nick attended a roundtable on voter
registration, where members from the present campuses shared ideas on how
to draw more attention to the cause of voter registration. Dave attended
Campus Issues roundtable, where he gathered thoughts and experiences from
others regarding CI’s current issues focusing on skateboarding and smoking on
campus. Dave discussed briefly the CHESS Committee, which will be shifting
focus away from leadership development to just lobbying and political
advocacy. CHESS is still looking for location to hold their conference, whose
theme will be the Made in the CSU campaign. Ben asked for more information
on CSUnity; Nick: CSUnity is more of brand that is trying to be established by
the school, most of conference was geared toward Prop 30 initiatives.
b. Action Items:
i. Election of Senate Pro Tempore
1. The Senate Prop Tempore will take the place of the Vice President in the event
that he is not able to attend a Senate Meeting. Steven opens the floor for
nominations. Senator Horney nominates Senator Vinas. Senator Vinas accepts.
There are no other nominations. Senator Wilson asked Steven and Chelsea,
who both serve on the Model U.N., what would happen in the event that both
should not be able to attend the Senate meeting due to model U.N. Steven
directed Senator Wilson to the line of succession in the by-laws. A vote was
held and Senator Vinas was voted in unanimously.
VIII. Reports:
a. Advisor – Christine Porter-
b. President – David Ashley- David is working on filling executive positions. He attended the CSSA
Meeting over the weekend. He mentioned the idea of possibly assigning one person to handle
the sole issue of skateboarding on campus. David made the Senate aware of the upcoming ASI
Board Committee meeting, where they will be discussing possible fee adjustments. He also
notified them of the Student Fee Oversight Committee meetings.
c. Vice President – Steven Jordan
d. Senate – Senators:
i. Zein Alameddine- No report given.
ii. Vanessa Bahena.-
1. Announced that tabling in Housing will begin on October 1st
, 2012, with two
clubs tabling per week. Senator Bahena also reported on her Meeting with
Cindy Derrico to discuss issues within Housing, such as everyday tabling and

smoking locations, as well as her attendance at the last USAWA meeting to
promote Student Government’s voter registration efforts.
iii. Kristina Cervi-
1. Senator Cervi is putting contact list together for local High Schools and Junior
Colleges. She is also working on a packet for all transfer students to receive at
orientation.
iv. Carissa Collinge-
1. Reported to the Senate her work developing fliers to support Proposition 30,
and her efforts to develop a YouTube video to promote voter registration on
campus. The Senator also announced that she is now the Public Outreach
Officer for the Green Generation Club. She will be attending the AASHE
Conference on October 14th
, 2012.
v. Rhonna Horney-
1. Working on establishing Student Government visibility by attending RA and
RHA meetings. Senator Horney met with Liz Miller to work out the logistics of
door to door voter registration on September 25th
. She invited any members of
Student Government present to attend that night’s RHA Meeting at 8 p.m.
vi. Jana Plat-
1. Senator Plat is focusing on developing Twitter Fast Follow commuters, which
would send twitter updates to phones as text messages. She believes this will
be a great tool for reaching commuters, and helping them communicate with
one another. She also met with VCDCC, who are interested in helping Student
Government with voter registration.
vii. Chelsea Vinas-
1. Senator Vinas is working with the CI Civility Campaign. She and Steven have
met to begin developing a plan for the Multicultural Caucus, which would be a
place to meet and exchange ideas. She invited members of Student
Government to attend the exchange student socials. The Senator has also been
attending various cultural clubs on Campus to introduce herself and hear ideas
from the members.
viii. Ashley Walters-
1. Announced that the Commuter and Transfer Club had filled out paper work
appropriately. She plans on working closely with club, which will begin setting
up meetings to establish goals and discuss the needs of Commuter and Transfer
students.

1. Senator Wilson is looking for ideas from students on the Smoking Policy as it
stands. He announced that he will be meeting with Tony Rice, Dr. Sawyer, and
Cindy Derrico to discuss the history of the smoking policy, and how the issue
came about. The policy will be up for review next year.

Projects:
I. Transfer Student Orientation
a. Putting together packet that transfer students would receive at orientation.
II. Local High School/Community College Outreach
a. Creating working list of contacts, and developing concepts of organizations at local campuses.
b. Developing ideas to address at schools in order to represent CI.
III. Advertisement for Prop 30
a. Best ways to spread knowledge on Propositions affect trigger cuts.

I. Camarillo High School Football Game
a. Spoke with Principal and Activities Director trying to develop ideas for Student Government
outreach to local high schools
II. Meeting with CTV and Kirsten Moss Frye
a. Collaborated for more ideas regarding Transfer Orientation, C4, and upcoming events.

a. Excited for this year, cramming in the next month the Fee Increase Package.
